Challenging woods course—lots of P.I. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 9, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very shaded (great for hot, mid-day rounds in July & August), poured concrete tee pads, very clear signage pointing to each next hole, picnic table at most tees. Also nice that it is in the same park as another great 18-hole course, too!

Cons:

Most holes are in the deep woods, so there are often trees in your way, and on some holes, it's A LOT of trees. You're often teeing off in alleys of trees and shrubberies. While they provide good shade for those hot July days, they're also obviously tough to play around. Also, unless you're a pro, and can always keep your discs in the mown fairway, be warned that there is a lot of poison ivy throughout every hole. It's not a question of if your disc(s) will touch poison ivy, it's when. I'd recommend having many backup discs of each type, especially fairway drivers and midranges, because you'll need them after one or two land in a big patch of the leaves-of-three (let them be!).

The holes are generally not open or long enough to warrant your Big Bertha-equivalent ultra-long-range drivers. You simply won't have enough room or lack of obstacles to ever really "go for it" at all. I drove from the tee box a large majority of the holes using midrange discs.

Other Thoughts:

It's great to have another option to play, especially in the same park as another (great) 18-hole course, but this course is monotonous--every hole is the same, every time; there is simply not enough variation. I prefer a mixture of (some) challenging woods holes, but also some less-stressful open holes where you can let the big dog discs run, so to speak.

But honestly, the biggest reason I gave it a lower score is that there's Poision Ivy everywhere -- it is honestly a real buzzkill. Instead of being able to enjoy the round, I'm constantly worried about throwing my disc into the fringe, and seeing how much of a patch of P.I. I landed in. I really wish they'd somehow be able to get rid of it. Because of these reasons, I'm not likely to play this course again.

Suggestion: when you get home from playing here, you'll want to take a very cold shower with some degreasing dish soap (like Dawn). Don't use hot water; that opens up your skin's pores, and you'll get a worse P.I. rash. Also, soak your discs in dish soap, to neutralize the urushiol oil that you'll likely have on them, from the many trips you'll take through the Poision Ivy.

I'm glad to say I have tried this course, and would play it again, if they were able to keep the P.I. out of it, but it's too much--it's everywhere. Know what it looks like, and I wish you good luck in avoiding it.

Great Complement to West 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 5, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

For being a heavily wooded course, the fairways are wide enough that they don't feel claustrophobic while still presenting a challenge. It's a pretty balanced course in terms of hole length as well with some long to very long holes and a few ace runs thrown in here and there for good measure. It's a course that will test your precision on just about every hole to some extent.

Great concrete pads and good directional signage round things out here. Overall just a solid course.

Cons:

There aren't tee signs yet as of this review. Generally they aren't necessary to figure out a hole as there aren't many blind baskets but it would be nice not to have to refer to my phone to get the lengths.

There are a couple of poke and hope holes as well that tend to rely more on luck than skill to get through them in many cases. But these holes are definitely the exceptions to the otherwise great holes this course offers.

The first tee can be tough to find, some signage and/or a map at the parking area would be helpful.

Also, and I'm not deducting anything from the course for this, it tends to be very buggy in the warmer months. Mosquitoes or deer flies will be all over you. So bring bug spray if you're playing in the summer.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great heavily wooded complement to the more park-like West course. Now when I say heavily wooded, I'm not talking about NC style wooded courses so don't go in expecting to have to thread needles. Going off fairway will put some hurt on your score though.

I'm sure tee signs and benches are on their way if this course gets the same love the West course has received and the course looks better every time I go back to play.

A quick tip, the two courses start in entirely different areas so if you're looking to play both, I'd recommend following directions to this course. Then you have the option of playing East and hopping right onto #11 West and making your way around that way.

The Clay Park courses are the best in the Syracuse area IMO. I tend to lean towards the more park-like courses so I prefer the West course but I really enjoy this course as well. If you're passing through the area you should definitely make time to play all 36 here, you won't be disappointed.

Pros:

interesting difficult holes
well maintained
great tees well marked

Cons:

interesting difficult holes
Could rate it higher, but I was hot and exhausted.
i'll play this one first next time.

Other Thoughts:

good complement to the bigger West Course. I suspect that if no one can get a mower back into the later fairways, they will be overgrown. When you drive 100 miles to play the other course, it is great to have somewhere else to throw. Course is easy to follow, with a map. Enjoyed our round.
