Coal Creek DGC drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 17, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Beautiful views almost the entire time. Highly recommend playing at dusk
- Fun challenge in topology, lots of ups and downs.
- Maps, baskets, tee boxes, directions, etc all in excellent shape

Cons:

- Holes are all fairly similar except a few standouts. More trees would add a lot of interest to the various shots.
- Better paths/grass clearing is needed! Lots of tall grass right now.

Other Thoughts:

It's worth playing this course if just for the views honestly.

Pros:

- Clear maps and layout
- Nice concrete tees with hole maps
- Nice baskets and a practice basket
- Decent variety of holes and shots

Cons:

- When we played, the grass was VERY tall (knee tall or more on some holes). Spent quite awhile looking for discs in the grass
- The irrigation ditch was pretty full and flowing. We lost one disk in it (or the grass around it, which was very tall).

Other Thoughts:

Overall a nice course. If the grass had been shorter we would have had a much better time.

Coal Creek DGC 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 6, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

My three pros:

- Very nice rec level course with large concrete tees, very nice signs, discgolfpark baskets, a practice basket, large course map at the start, designated parking area and even an electronic sun-burn-o-meter that informed me I had 15 minutes before I'd get a sunburn. The course seemed pretty well established with visible walking trails between each hole.

- Nice mix of holes make good use of the park elevation change and brings water/ vegetation into play on most holes. The water i mention comes in the form of a long irrigation canal that runs through the course and can completely change experience should the ditch be dry or full. On my round it was full and swift and murky. This canal is within circle 1 of at least half the holes as the baskets are almost all placed as close to it as possible. Considering there are few trees to deal with the creek and fear of disc loss gives the course its primary challenge. If the ditch dries out - the challenge dries out with it.

- Quick and easy to follow, only one other person playing on the nice afternoon I stopped by. The walking paths around the park are out of the way and dont seem to interfere with the course.

Cons:

My three cons:

- I have mixed feelings about the canal. With the canal the course plays like a 3.5, without the canal its more like a 2.5. While it added to the challenge and made the holes much more taxing, it seemed a bit overkill. I played pretty safely and still had a couple of close calls, someone playing aggressively would certainly struggle to stay away from the water. I learned quickly when I approached what I thought was a good drive on #1 to realize the canal just behind the basket that I could have easily reached with a bad skip. When the ditch dries out the fear of disc loss goes away and suddenly the aggressive play is not so scary.

- This course could use a set of long tees or longer basket positions. Many holes felt pretty short and the property is pretty huge.

- The holes get a bit repetitive towards the end with each hole a similar length with the creek just left of the basket. These holes all melted together in my mind.

Other Thoughts:

I liked this course and was happy to have stopped by although the course is a bit of a drive from most nearby towns. I found the course very enjoyable although I might have felt different if I had lost a disc or two to the canal. Overall the course is very similar to the other courses in the Denver area with minimal trees to deal with and dry scrubby vegetation. This was the first course (or park) I had been to with a sunburn meter installed at parking area and a big sign at 'The Turn' to tell you fun facts about Eerie's Banana shortage.
