The Shiretown Option

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 13, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

+ Mach V baskets are new and in great shape, catching well, and labeled w/ their number

+ Decent signage - tee sign with par/distance/map as well as large course map on bulletin board near Tee 1.

+ Navigation is pretty straightforward; The course map might be needed your first time there, but you can see pretty much the whole course layout from the parking lot. With the course on the short side, it's hard to get lost.

+ Course plays a loop

+ Plays through a multi-use park around the baseball field and tennis courts, so the grass is mowed regulary, also - free to play! Not a common thing in these parts.

+ Public restroom available, but it's a bit of a walk from the course to an outbuilding on the west side of the park (look for the building w/ a couple garage doors) and the hours they're open seem to vary.

+ The elevation present is used well. The first couple holes play flat, but 4 & 5 use the gentle slope of the hillside and 6 & 7 are a little steeper, using foliage to hide the basket on a couple short RHBH's.

+ For the land available you can use/practice backhands and forehands, plus with the course on the short side, it can really test the distance control of beginners/rec players. Other than that your main challenge here is going to be wind.

Cons:

- Natural tees, not marked, just grass next to the tee sign.

- A couple tee signs have maps that aren't perfectly diagrammed.

- Due to the short/open nature of the course, I could see how some fairways might get a little close to each other - not exactly crossing, but a bit close. 3 & 8 come to mind. It'd be easy to overshoot into a different fairway.

- Aside from the bathroom, no real amenities to speak of (benches/trash cans at tees, etc. (Again, it's a new course plus, on the short side so maybe they aren't needed?)

- Super short, don't expect to air much of anything out (I think the longest hole is just over 350', and several are 200-ish.

- The park is multi-use and it's not very big. Disc golf is not its priority - most weekdays I practically have the place to myself but you never know if you'll pull up to day camp or a baseball game or any one of several things. Many of these things don't necessarily interfere with your round, except maybe where parking is concerned.

Other Thoughts:

In an area where there's a dearth of DG courses, Houlton's Community Park DGC is an option. It fills a void in an area that was once a disc golf no-mans-land.

It's 9 holes of bare bones disc golf that won't necessarily wow anyone just passing through, but for anyone on their way to courses north or east it'll scratch the itch and give you a chance to stretch your legs. That said, if you're a local you might find these 9 holes growing on you after a while. It's great for a casual, quick flick, and also a handy place for practicing and working on your wind game.
