Straightforward but Fun

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 5, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

A standard bolf and frolf combo with nine simple but enjoyable holes.

-Turf: As usual, this golf course has great grass on which to play. Moderately skippy, quite grippy, and enjoyable to look at.

-Baskets: Good Mach-Vs.

-Flow: Super easy to follow and almost a clean loop.

-Distance: A range from 270' to 770', with most in the 300s. This is a happy medium between the standard bomber bolf courses and the other end of the spectrum with pitch n putts squeezed in anywhere.

-Friendly Crowd: All the golfers here were very kind to me, even though I played through multiple groups. This contrasts with the often oblivious or begrudging crowd at many courses.

-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: Modest shaping requirements that are more about where you end up than how you got there. Straight with a slight right finish is the preferred design, or simply straight with perhaps one or two guardians. Playing to my skill level, two of the holes qualify as par-4s, but any decent drive is serviceable. The last hole has a water carry in the 230'ish range. That said, some gentle elevation, sparse fairway trees, and fenced borders bring the straightforward design a bit to life for an enjoyable, no frills experience.

Cons:

-Amenities: The baskets are in good condition, but otherwise there is zero specific disc golf equipment. Pads are the grass marked for golf tees, signs are the golf signs, and there are no next tee arrows or such.

-Disc Loss: Hole (7) has a fence line well in reach of a lofted drive, and hole (9)'s pond could prove troublesome for short arms.

-Fairway Overlap: (2), (3), and (6) play parallel and there is lots of possibility for drives to slice over to the wrong side. I myself rolled over to the pad of (6) on my drive of (3), and later a golfer did the exact same thing when I was on (6).

-Fee: I think it was $10.75 for 9 holes, which is a bit steep imo. Per hole it was the most I can remember paying, but these are not any out-of-the-ordinary holes.

-Fairway Openness: As with many bolf courses, the fairways are massive for frolf. Beyond guardians and the occasional mid-fairway blocker, there isn't anything to avoid.

Other Thoughts:

Cottonwood was an inoffensive bolf integration that lets throw some nice drives, card birdies, and enjoy some pleasant green grass. It's a level above some monotonous bolf courses, but not as interesting as a good shaping-based disc golf track. All in all, it's at the upper end of Typical, if you feel like shelling out $11.
