Rittman Congestion 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 26, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

~Good use of elevation
~Decent variety of holes
~No redundancy

Cons:

~Poor tee areas (small gravel filled squares)
~Difficult to navigate if it's your 1st visit
~Crossing holes, and dangerously close to other park areas
~Minimal signage or directional help
~Baskets are starting to rust

Other Thoughts:

Played during an autumn weekday afternoon so the park was empty. Located up the road from Morton Salt, it's a quaint park but felt a little run down to me. I can see where the most prominent issue would be trying to play during summer months or weekends, or whenever the park may have normal activities. The course zig-zags up and down a hill near to basketball courts, then around and in between the ball fields and pavilions. I was able to find my way around, but had to double check which basket to throw to on a few holes, and it took me a while to find a couple tees. The tees are unusable gravel filled boxes, but the grass worked fine. Holes are marked by numbered wooden posts. Layout is decent overall, but I can't help but feel it seemed forced and not completely thought out. The park is relatively small and perhaps not an ideal location for a disc golf course. Glad I stopped by while in the Medina area, but not a course I'll likely revisit.

Update: Decent 9-hole course with bad ammentites 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 4, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

+ There are a few really fun downhill holes here, with the best being #5. You'll want to throw multiple discs on that "top of the world" type of shot.

+ Tees are marked on every hole, navigation is made simple with arrows and tape guiding the way.

+ Pars are marked for beginners, and more advanced players playing all par 3's. Good place for people to learn the game.

Cons:

- The tees are the worst I've seen anywhere. Uneven gravel boxes surrounded by wood elevated from ground level. The boxes are ridiculously small, meaning almost all players will tee of to the sides of it.

- Baskets are only single chains, with a few being dented or rusty. #5's basket had grass and weeds growing up the the chains.

- May interfere with other park activities on busy days. If you want to play here, I'd recommend playing in the morning.

Other Thoughts:

With better tee pads and baskets, this would be a higher quality course. Despite having a few fun tosses, the course falls flat of its full potential.

Nice little course. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 24, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Excellent course with nice elevation changes. Many chances for an ace and a few par 5's where you can let-er-rip!

Well maintained.

If you pick the right time to play and the park is empty I highly recommend it.

Cons:

Hard to find.

The directions on the course page on this site are wrong.

Over populated park. During ball games cars are all through the course as well as people. Because I saw this in other reviews I went on a late October Saturday morning around 9am. There was me and a lady walking her dog. Saw 2 more starting to play the course as I was leaving.

Other Thoughts:

Definitely the right time of year to try this park! Play now while you can because during ball season you may as well forget it.

Not a disc golf course. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 10, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Elevation changes.

Cons:

There is no parking lot, so cars are all over the course. The fairways ARE cars. The baskets are in parking spaces, as if they were motorcycles.

Where cars don't go, kids' sports teams, and their parents watching, are.

In theory, this would be a fine little course, if it had designated hours in which it could be a disc golf course.

Other Thoughts:

I posted a picture of what this place looks like, with cars and sports teams over the fairways, and it was taken down. That was unconscionable. People could waste time traveling, expecting to be able to play. Don't waste people's time.

Dave Simpson Memorial DGC: A dangerous course with loads of potential! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 5, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Dave Simpson Memorial DGC is a very nice park in the beautiful city of Rittman! However, a nice park does not always mean a nice course. There are some fun holes here, and the elevation was used very nicely. The course is very clean, and it seems like the park is kept in great shape. There are restrooms on site, and many other things to do in the park. There are nice baskets, but one of them was actually broken when I went out today.

Cons:

The #1 issue on this course is safety. This course would be a blast to play if there weren't so many holes that interfere with other park activities. There are many shots that are just plain unsafe, like hole #3 which is aimed towards a basket extremely close to the baseball field. Hole #1 gets very close to the skate park. The tees are pretty bad as well. They are extremely small and filled with gravel. I don't care a ton about tee boxes, but gravel really annoys me. For me, the amount of danger on this course knocks it down from a 3.5 to a 1.0. It's just that unsafe.

Other Thoughts:

In conclusion, Dave Simpson Memorial DGC is a fun course, but really is unplayable do to the danger on nearly every single hole. I think this course would benefit from being completely re-designed. The course is in a very nice space, with loads of potential, but it is just to dangerous to play at the moment. I'll be contacting the park district today, and I will update my review with the latest information on the status of the course.
