Forget About The Curveball, Give-em The Heater.

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 24, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

(3.154 Rating) A lightly wooded ball golf conversion course with mass appeal.
- SKILL LEVEL FRIENDLY - One of Dineen's best features is its ability to please a wide segment of the player population. There are two layouts here. A long basket layout and a short basket layout. The longs are going to be great for both MA1s and some MA2s. Not much in the technical department, but the long placements here average over 340-feet long, all Par 3s. Wowza. Meanwhile, the short basket layout is going to be ideal for MA3s, with blend-over appeal to some MA4s and some MA2s. That's a lot of satisfied customers.
- BEGINNER FRIENDLY - Not a perfect new player course, it's a little long, but there are only a couple places to get into real trouble. This would be a good course to begin and improve on in general in my opinion.
- AMENITIES - Dineen, like many courses in the Milwaukee area, is blessed with high quality equipment and some extras. Two practice baskets and a beautiful course map near tee (1). One large well-built concrete tee per hole. High quality benches behind every tee. Two pro 28 DISCatchers on each hole. To nit-pick, I do wish they had color coded the baskets to match the tee signs though. Also, an enclosed pavilion, restrooms, playgrounds and a kiddo splashpad.
- SIGNAGE AND NAVIGATION - In addition to the amenities noted above, Dineen's tee signs are top notch. All the required info is on them. The tee sign on (9) even added a directional narrative, "long walk, take path, veer left." The great signs, along with the course map, makes this course super easy to follow. Unfortunately, there may be some minor vandalism going on. The tee signs for holes (4), (5) and (12) were all missing for my visit.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - I scored this aspect 60 percentile. The park seems to be well maintained except for the fringes. There's lots of mild sloping terrain, a small creek and a pond. There's even a few spots where the park has dropped extra money for things such as flower gardens, large rocks and mulching around baskets. The drawbacks are trash on the park edges, and the openish feel of several holes.

Cons:

A solid course lacking exotic charm.
- BALL GOLF CONVERSION - Dineen is one of the nicest ball golf conversion courses I've played. But, like all of the prior ones I've hit, the gameplay dynamics just don't speak to me. Lots of lightly wooded holes with wide fairways. I made some really poor throws and I was rarely punished. The tee throws here just didn't get the adrenaline pumping enough in me to fall in love. The power factor is here, but robust engaging cerebral elements are not.
- MULTI USE HAZARDS - Walking paths can come into play on horrible throws on several holes. Players may need to wait on occasion if they have a tendency to grip lock-em. I thought the design did a heck of a job orienting play in a way to avoid conflicts.
- LAYOUT FLOW - Four holes are in a different section of the park. This is holes (6) thru (9). Most first-time players will need to peak at their photo of the course map to make the transition to and away from this hole grouping. A super minor issue.
- PAY TO PLAY - 5 dollars to play all day and 40 dollars for a season pass. Considering how well-kept this course is, I'd say it's worth the money once for non-locals and also worth the $40 for locals.
- TRASH - Most of the course was in great shape, but wow was there a lot of trash along the fringes. (12) looked terrible. It almost seemed like someone emptied a half dozen full garbage bags along the left side of the fairway. The park is in a medium density urban area with apartments on two sides.

Other Thoughts:

Dineen is a really well-done course. It's a big homerun for locals and an appealing relaxing play for visitors alike. It's a good to very good course through and through, and I'm sure I'd play here often if I lived near by. The reason I'm not elevating this course to my 3.5 level of rated courses, is because of the lack of exotic dynamics. Those that prefer lightly wooded bomber courses are likely going to rate this one higher than I have. It reminds me of courses like 65th Infantry Park in Orlando, Dallas Island in Chattanooga and Katherine Legge in Chicago. Not destination worthy in my opinion. Perhaps those that dig ball golf conversion courses will find it so. To those visiting Milwaukee, I personally have this as my 3rd highest rated course as of this review. Note, I haven't thrown, Estabrook, Madison or Brown Deer yet. I have it well behind Drezka and a sub-atomic particle behind Root River. Considering what I've read about the other 3 that I haven't played, Dineen would likely project as my 5th top Milwaukee area course. Unless, metro area outliers like Johnston Park and Heritage Trails are included, then I would kick Dineen out of the top 5 grouping. Again, fun relaxing well-done course. Two thumps up on the design and delivery.
- TIME PLAY - I logged 56 minutes solo at the break of dawn.

Top 3 in Milwaukee for sure 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 30, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Baskets are solid. I love that the tees are wider at the back and get narrower toward the front, it gives rooms for a variety of run-ups. 10/10

Navigation once you get to the tees is very easy. Most holes you can see both baskets from the tee, the holes that you can't you can see one of them and the tee signs are very detailed. 10/10

This course has a great variety of distances, especially if you want to mix and match playing the long/short baskets. Could maybe use one bomber hole as a true par 4 as nothing is over 500', but holes 2, 4, 10, 15, and 17 will take all of your distance. 9/10

This is probably the best course in Milwaukee to go to if your group has a variety of skill levels. The long baskets will challenge all except for maybe 970+ disc golfers. I wouldn't bring someone here for their first time playing, but the short baskets are great for casual players. 9/10

They did a great job using what they had available to them here. There is a stretch where 3 out of the 4 holes are pretty boring (6, 8, 9), just wide open and flat 330'-360', but they didn't have many options that wouldn't detract from the rest of the course, and hole 7 is cool. I think hole 15 would be more interesting if the tee was moved down and to the left to make it a more technical shot, but they might have been worried about stray discs going toward the hole 2 tee. Playing with strict OB for the roped off "tall" grass is a good touch for an additional obstacle too. 9/10

There isn't a ton of elevation here, but it probably has more by far than any other in Milwaukee. There's a good variety of uphill, downhill, and rolling hills with some larger mounds. 8/10

There aren't technically alternate basket positions, but there are two baskets permanently in for each hole that help with replayability. It's nice to be able to choose one if you have a favorite rather than hope it's where you like it on the day you go. It wouldn't hurt to have an additional alternate that could be used as well, but would require more maintenance. 8/10

For the most part you aren't going to spend a lot of time looking for discs. The main exception is hole 4 with the creek VERY in play on the left. The water isn't deep so you should be able to get your disc out, but the brush around it is very thick. Missing the gap on hole 2 or going right on hole 7 are about the only other trouble spots. 8/10

The course has been very well mowed all three times I have been. The "tall" grass for the roped off OB is just a little past ankle high so not bad at all. Everything is in great condition except the tee sign on hole 2 is missing. 8/10

For the most part the course is pretty open, with a few holes with more obstacles. There aren't any holes here I would call "technical", but the roped off tall grass forces you to be pretty accurate with your landing spots on several holes. 7/10

Even though most holes kind of let you do whatever you want, there are a few that do make you think about which type of shot to throw. This is more true on the back nine than the front. Decisionmaking 6/10

Cons:

The biggest issue here is just the navigation between the holes (it's usually a good sign for a course to have this as it's biggest issue). There are multiple holes with pretty long walks in between with no indication of where to go. There isn't a course map at the start, which doesn't help. It's a newer course so I'm hoping this could change. Having some type of indication of the next hole either on the tee signs or arrows on the ground by the baskets would be very helpful. 2/10

There are only a couple holes that have much of a dogleg to force you to curve one direction or the other. For the long baskets, the ones that do have doglegs are all right to left. The short baskets do have a couple that require a left to right. For the most part both baskets let you take any path you want to get there. 4/10

The course could use a couple benches at the tees, particularly on the holes following the longer walks. There's a port-a-potty at the start of the course. A place to use the restroom or refill your water somewhere in the middle of the course would be nice. The roped-off "tall" grass is just a little past ankle height, nothing too bad for walking through. 5/10

Other Thoughts:

Overall Challenge: 7/10 (to the long pins)

I'm new to the area, but from what I hear there has been a course here for a long time, but they have re-worked the layout. I'm hoping that some amenities (mainly a course map) are still on the way. I think this course, Dretzka, and Brown Deer are pretty equal, and a tier above the other Milwaukee County courses.

Note: As of the writing of this review I have been to this course three times. I have not played to the short baskets in any of my rounds so some of this review may apply more to the long baskets, but since the shorts are all pretty visible from the tees I hope it'll be close enough.
