Pros:
Don Rusk Memorial Disc Golf Course is a 9 holer on the west side of Dayton , giving much needed support to the disc golf fans that play somewhere off of Hwy 35 , their only other close option being the Arthur O Fischer project . The parking lot here is big , and you have the option of parking straight ahead at the end of the lot where #9 is the closest , or to the far left just as pulling in where the course starts . There are bathrooms in the middle of the park , but they seem to be seasonal .
THE EQUIPMENT -- There is a small kiosk near hole 1 , with a faded and unreadable map of the course . It also has the rules of golf , too . print a map or use U Disc .
The tee pads are natural , with a wood toe board . The board gives the hole length in yards . For conversion sake , you might want to print a score card , too . The signage , besides the toe board , is a small white post next to the hole with a large hole # on it . The baskets are nice Discatchers that were originally yellow , but spray painted ( ? ) some different colors on parts of it . They do catch well .
THE LANDSCAPE -- The 9 hole course is more or less a large rectangle around sports fields and tennis courts . It is very flat , with about the most elevation being maybe 3 feet . This is almost wide open here . There are a few back yards with fences on the left of holes 1 & 2 , and some thick growth on the left of 3 & 4 that you need to be aware of . There are some trees flanking the basket on #8 , and also on #9 , a dogleg that can travel across a gulley . A small shelter is in the fairway of #1 . Also , beware of some standing water in 3 & 4 . more in cons .
THE HIGHLIGHTS -- Not any solid holes here , but the course does brag some length . 3 holes at around 520' and 3 more at over 400 . The best hole is #9 . It has a small tree line on the left , with private back yards beyond it . A drainage gully can come into play about halfway down the fairway , where the fairway breaks left into a little bit of woods . You will have to decide whether you want to shortcut across the last house's property , or cut hard left to a small tree grove where the basket sits .
DISC RISK -- Low . If you can control your drives enough to avoid the fenced in back yards on the left on 1 , 2 and a little of 9 , you should never lose a disc .
THE TIME -- It took me about 40 minutes to play the course . A foursome can play it in in about an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes .
This course can be windy since it's so wide open . Also , bring hiking boots or some crummy shoes if playing after a rain
Cons:
#1 Equipment -- I'm not a big fan of toe boards , but since the course is new , maybe it makes the tee pads more portable if wanting to redesign part of the course . I am not sure why the toe boards give the distance in yards , though . strange .Turf or rubber pads would help . The kiosk might better serve the out of towners and even the locals if it faced the parking lot instead of the first hole . The basket on #6 leans . Must have been nicked by a mower or hung on by bored brothers at soccer practice .
" Plunking , Party For 4 ? " -- There is a gravel walking path that comes into play on most of the course . Holes 6 & 7 are very close to the fields . Add the wind , and you have a lot of victims to choose from on a day where the park is crowded .There is a picnic bench under a small shelter in the middle of the fairway on hole 1 .
Challenge -- With the exception of hole 9 , All of the baskets are straight ahead , with little or no obstruction . There is some great hole length , but no shot shaping . It's just grip and rip .
Standing Water -- Playing after a good rain , the course will be soaked . There was water over most of my shoes near the basket of #3 and the tee pad of #4 .
Wind -- It can be a con or a pro .It's very heavy here Just making you aware .
Other Thoughts:
Okay . What the course lacks in beauty , it makes up for in function . It adds to the Dayton west side course play list , and it's free . Because I played here during the December Holidays , I couldn't tell how well the course is received .
MY RECOMMENDATION -- Barring a lot of path walkers or the soccer fields full , this is an excellent opportunity for newbies to learn the game and control their discs without spending a lot of time looking for them . There are a couple of places for locals to hang out after a round or 2 if they wanted to , just not in the #1 fairway shelter . Families might come up and enjoy an after dinner or weekend round together .
I don't know if there is enough here to attract any players that are intermediate on up , unless they want to air out some new plastic or practice putting . They will likely go to nearby Arthur O Fischer . Since that course is close , Course Collectors can jump both of these in a short morning since they are not too far off of I-75 . Travelers might want to skip this course if just looking for a leg stretch .
If not local or bagging , you might want to give this course a pass .
