Not really worth the time

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 28, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Discatchers in fairly good repair
-Plenty of parking
-Bathrooms available

Cons:

-Course just wraps around edge of field, every single shot can be a RHBH hyzer bomb with the only obstacles on hole 9
-No tee pads, just a toe bar in the ground with very uneven ground to throw from
-The main part of the park is well cared for, the the course is not; with high grass for the fairway and almost uncontrolled grass for the rough
-No tee signs, distance markings on toe bar are in yards?
-The ground throughout the course is quite rutted up, especially on holes 1-4, making it surprisingly treacherous for an open field as they are hidden in the tall grass

Other Thoughts:

This is the only course that I would consider on my way home from work, so I wish I could say it is worth stopping to at least get in some practice. But the honest truth is that it is basically 9 holes of the exact same shot. I would rather just do field work and spend some time at a practice basket because of the unnecessarily uneven and unkept ground. Dayton has so many beginner friendly courses, I would sadly recommend spending your time elsewhere. If they would just add tee pads, signs, and improved grounds care I would be much more forgiving in ratings

Don Rusk Memorial Disc Golf Course " Wide Open For Business " 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 24, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Don Rusk Memorial Disc Golf Course is a 9 holer on the west side of Dayton , giving much needed support to the disc golf fans that play somewhere off of Hwy 35 , their only other close option being the Arthur O Fischer project . The parking lot here is big , and you have the option of parking straight ahead at the end of the lot where #9 is the closest , or to the far left just as pulling in where the course starts . There are bathrooms in the middle of the park , but they seem to be seasonal .
THE EQUIPMENT -- There is a small kiosk near hole 1 , with a faded and unreadable map of the course . It also has the rules of golf , too . print a map or use U Disc .
The tee pads are natural , with a wood toe board . The board gives the hole length in yards . For conversion sake , you might want to print a score card , too . The signage , besides the toe board , is a small white post next to the hole with a large hole # on it . The baskets are nice Discatchers that were originally yellow , but spray painted ( ? ) some different colors on parts of it . They do catch well .
THE LANDSCAPE -- The 9 hole course is more or less a large rectangle around sports fields and tennis courts . It is very flat , with about the most elevation being maybe 3 feet . This is almost wide open here . There are a few back yards with fences on the left of holes 1 & 2 , and some thick growth on the left of 3 & 4 that you need to be aware of . There are some trees flanking the basket on #8 , and also on #9 , a dogleg that can travel across a gulley . A small shelter is in the fairway of #1 . Also , beware of some standing water in 3 & 4 . more in cons .
THE HIGHLIGHTS -- Not any solid holes here , but the course does brag some length . 3 holes at around 520' and 3 more at over 400 . The best hole is #9 . It has a small tree line on the left , with private back yards beyond it . A drainage gully can come into play about halfway down the fairway , where the fairway breaks left into a little bit of woods . You will have to decide whether you want to shortcut across the last house's property , or cut hard left to a small tree grove where the basket sits .
DISC RISK -- Low . If you can control your drives enough to avoid the fenced in back yards on the left on 1 , 2 and a little of 9 , you should never lose a disc .
THE TIME -- It took me about 40 minutes to play the course . A foursome can play it in in about an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes .
This course can be windy since it's so wide open . Also , bring hiking boots or some crummy shoes if playing after a rain

Cons:

#1 Equipment -- I'm not a big fan of toe boards , but since the course is new , maybe it makes the tee pads more portable if wanting to redesign part of the course . I am not sure why the toe boards give the distance in yards , though . strange .Turf or rubber pads would help . The kiosk might better serve the out of towners and even the locals if it faced the parking lot instead of the first hole . The basket on #6 leans . Must have been nicked by a mower or hung on by bored brothers at soccer practice .
" Plunking , Party For 4 ? " -- There is a gravel walking path that comes into play on most of the course . Holes 6 & 7 are very close to the fields . Add the wind , and you have a lot of victims to choose from on a day where the park is crowded .There is a picnic bench under a small shelter in the middle of the fairway on hole 1 .
Challenge -- With the exception of hole 9 , All of the baskets are straight ahead , with little or no obstruction . There is some great hole length , but no shot shaping . It's just grip and rip .
Standing Water -- Playing after a good rain , the course will be soaked . There was water over most of my shoes near the basket of #3 and the tee pad of #4 .
Wind -- It can be a con or a pro .It's very heavy here Just making you aware .

Other Thoughts:

Okay . What the course lacks in beauty , it makes up for in function . It adds to the Dayton west side course play list , and it's free . Because I played here during the December Holidays , I couldn't tell how well the course is received .
MY RECOMMENDATION -- Barring a lot of path walkers or the soccer fields full , this is an excellent opportunity for newbies to learn the game and control their discs without spending a lot of time looking for them . There are a couple of places for locals to hang out after a round or 2 if they wanted to , just not in the #1 fairway shelter . Families might come up and enjoy an after dinner or weekend round together .
I don't know if there is enough here to attract any players that are intermediate on up , unless they want to air out some new plastic or practice putting . They will likely go to nearby Arthur O Fischer . Since that course is close , Course Collectors can jump both of these in a short morning since they are not too far off of I-75 . Travelers might want to skip this course if just looking for a leg stretch .
If not local or bagging , you might want to give this course a pass .

Field. Work. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 13, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

New Lebanon didn't have a course in 2017, and the nearest (AO Fischer) was in transition limbo, so it's nice that they committed to installing somewhere folks could play. The layout proceeds clockwise around the perimeter of a large park (prairie grass wildlife area, and along a gravel path that is used by locals for exercise).

There is a course sign and map kiosk between the gravel parking lot and the first tee (but it faces the field, not the lot). Tees are marked well enough with a small post and a toe board indicating distance (in yardage). Baskets are DisCatchers, and are interestingly each painted a different banded color.

As far as the disc golf play, you'll have plenty of opportunity for field work and drives from the natural turf tees, with three holes over 500' and three more over 400'. Approach shots will require most of us to exercise control somewhat, as five of the baskets are near the park edge rough or actually in between a few park pine trees. Holes 8 & 9 have pretty greens.

Cons:

The limitations of the space meant not a lot of variety. Totally flat land tends to get marshy, muddy and slick in spots during the winter/spring. Hole distances are well out of range of most beginners, meaning that even intermediate level players will mostly be looking at a full drive, a ranged upshot, and a putt on every hole. And only one hole actually requires a specific technique to get there.

Unfortunately that hole (9) also has the most dangerous design, teeing off like the others in an open field, but finishing across the culvert and paved path along the more likely walked section of the park, so care needs to be taken crossing there into the grove of trees protecting the basket.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, if you like field work (I don't), this might be the course for you. A chance to test your control on a windy day perhaps, but no chance to play against natural disc golf obstacles. I say congrats on having a course, but only the most absolutely dedicated baggers will be coming into town to check this off their lists.
