A Bland, but Reasonable Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 20, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course has a decent variety of hole lengths. Some are short and some are kind of long. There's a steep-sloped creek surrounded by trees that runs through the park, and that sometimes comes into play on this course. There are a couple holes that run alongside it, a couple holes holes with baskets right in front it (if you overthrow those baskets, your disc will land either in the creek or near the bottom of that steep slope), and a couple other holes in which you have to throw your disc through those trees and over the creek. Outside of that there are a few holes that have trees that come into play, encouraging you to be more careful with your accuracy. Also, the back boundary of this park has a row of trees that separate the park from a crop field. That serves as an obstacle somewhat on a few holes, but only to the extent that if your disc sails too far to the left, it'll either land in that field or get stuck in the trees.

Cons:

Most of the holes are flat and wide open, which makes it real easy for players to get low scores. What's sad is that there's a lot of room on those holes for them to add obstacles like trees and bushes to make them more challenging and thus more fun to play. There's also room for some of them to be longer, which would've been a good idea because of how easy they are. The third hole is a little tricky to find. Also, there's a basket near the 18th hole that's not part of the course, and it's unclear as to why it's there. There's not a 19th hole to play, but they could easily add one, using that basket. All they need to do is put a tee pad near the corner where the trees meet the sidewalk, and they'll have a 19th hole that'll be more fun to play than most of the other holes on that course.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, this course is good enough that it's worth playing if you live in the area and don't want to travel far to play. Unfortunately, it's too easy for more experienced players. If they could add some obstacles to those flat and open holes, increase the length of some of the holes, and also add a 19th hole, that would make a huge difference.

Grey if you enjoy no obstacles and flat, flat land 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 10, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Easy to hit hole-in-one baskets. No obstructions in any capacity. Great for the absolute beginner.

Cons:

There is nothing of interest or note about this course. It will be forgotten in minutes. The course offers nothing in the way of challenge aside from the crudiest stream around a couple holes. If a my disc were to land in that "water" I would have left it. Disgusting pee colored water with tires in it. The entire course is flat and short. Takes about 40 minutes to do.

The Earth isn't flat, but this course is! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 31, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is still a very new course as of this writing, and all 18 Black Hole baskets are in perfect condition. There are nice cement tee pads, and color tee signs with map/info/par (though some tee signs were broken when I played).

Most of the course plays through areas of the park not likely to be used by other park visitors.

There is a small tree-lined creek running through the park and it comes into play on several of the holes. Three of the holes have water carries (two tee shots, one approach).

Cons:

I think the designers did a fine job with the space they had but there just isn't a lot of interesting terrain here to work with. The entire park is flat as a pancake other than where the creek runs through. The water carries over the creek are pretty easy for even a recreational player (lest you hit a tree branch with your disc). Other than the creek, the course offers very few challenges. Many holes have a wide, flat fairway with zero obstacles between tee and basket.

It was not windy when I played but I imagine wind could have a major effect with the course being so wide open.

Other Thoughts:

The portion of Dorr Township Park on the north side of 142nd Ave basically has two halves: a front portion with baseball diamond/tennis court/playground/pavilion/etc. and a back half that is a wide open, flat field. The halves are divided by the creek mentioned above.

Holes 1-3 run around the perimeter of the front half of the park. There are a couple trees and park structures that provide obstacles on these holes.

Your tee shot on Hole 4 will carry over the creek to a pin in the back field of the park. Holes #5-9 are in the back field.

The signature hole here may be #10. It runs 468' across the back field and then over the creek at the end (so returning to the front half of the park) and up a small mound to the basket.

On #11 your tee shot will carry back over the creek again and it's back in the back field for holes #11-15. #13 and #15 pins are located close to the creek - if you overthrow your putts/approaches on these holes your disc will take a bath. #16-18 finish things up back in the front half of the park.

Overall, there just isn't enough variety here to make it a place I would come back to regularly (especially with so many other courses in the greater Grand Rapids area). Even my "signature" hole #10 is about 400' worth of throwing across the wide open, flat field before 68' of more interesting terrain to finish up. The course is worth a play if you're local but certainly falls well short of a destination type course. Always nice to see more new courses being installed though!

Update June 2021: What used to be hole 3 has been eliminated entirely. If I recall the hole 3 basket was located kind of near the hole 2 basket, so you had to backtrack a bit to get to hole 3 tee. Now it's just a short but reasonable walk from hole 2 basket to hole 4 tee around the outfield fence next to the creek (a Next Tee sign would be nice). To compensate for the old hole 3 being removed, a new hole has been added at the end of the course i.e. after hole 18. The new hole is similar to the old hole 3 in length and in that there are a couple of trees that could come into play. It plays back towards the parking lot which is nice because the old hole 18 plays away from the parking lot, so previously you just had to walk back after.
Also, more of the tee signs have been broken since last year. The majority of them are now unreadable. Somehow this includes the tee sign for the new hole. It looks like someone just dug out the tee pad and tee sign from the old hole and transported it across the park to the new hole (the teepad is also cracked). Hopefully new tee signs with updated hole numbers are on the way.
The 4-6 throws near/over the creek and nice baskets are the only things keeping me from downgrading my review to a 2.0. I really can't emphasize enough how boring many of the other holes are. If they strategically planted a few trees in the back field and fixed the tee signs this could be a better course.
