Beginner-Friendly 9 Hole Course in City Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 3, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

+ Nine Hole Course in Dunbar City Park: Shorter pitch & putt style course most players would navigate using only midranges and putters. This style of course is great for beginners and families. Holes are all around 150' in length without too many obstacles. The baskets are Innova DISCatchers. These have bright yellow bands that are easy to see and the targets catch putts well.

+ Fun Layout: This course uses a small area well to give the player a variety of shots. Nice use of elevation and partial woods provide a quick yet enjoyable round. You can get through nine holes in 20-30 minutes if you're playing solo. New players will learn the game without getting frustrated and experienced players can use the course for putt & approach practice.

+ Upkeep: The city takes good care of the course so the grass is always mowed and the park stays clean. You're unlikely to lose a disc here. Even an errant shot that finds the rare rough spots shouldn't cost you a disc. The park is aging but facilities are well-maintained.

+ Location: This course is very close to the Dunbar exit on I-64. Getting on and off the interstate is easy so this is a good choice for a quick round after work or stretching your legs if you're passing through the area. Close to lodging, shopping, restaurants, and a short drive to Charleston which is the capital city of West Virginia.

+ Proximity to Other Courses: Dunbar City Park is minutes away from the challenging and heavily wooded Wine Cellar Park. City Park could serve as a good warm up for the more challenging course at Wine Cellar. Within 30 minutes of Dunbar players can reach other quality courses including Valley Park, Redeemer Park, Coonskin Park, and Little Creek Park.

+ Extra Amenities: This course has a couple of extras that might appeal to families. Shelters are available for rental or a quick lunch. There is also a playground that includes a handicapped-accessible swing. Near the main parking area is a single basketball hoop. There are a set of restrooms and several trash cans placed throughout the park.

Cons:

- Navigation: You won't get lost on this course but getting started and finding the right tees may take a new player some extra time to navigate. Check the insides of each basket as the rungs are marked to point you to the next hole.

- Tee Pads: Landscaping stones have been placed at each tee pad that are adequate for a stand-still throw. This works for most holes but a couple of times you might want a short run-up and footwork can be awkward due to the short tee pads. Signage is minimal but sufficient. A post is near each tee and provides an accurate distance to each basket.

- Distance: Experienced players may be bored here and might consider other layouts in the area. This course was designed for newer players so a more advanced golfer will not be challenged to score well. This is not a scenic course by any means as the park is small and close to the interstate.

Other Thoughts:

It is refreshing to see a layout like this in the area. This is a great place to bring your family or a friend trying out disc golf for the first time. If you're a more advanced player this course is still worth a play to warm up for a round, practice your short game, or just run some aces.

Be sure to share this park with others. There is a residential unit near the main parking area and a playground close to the disc golf course. Please keep the park clean and utilize the trash cans provided.

For a good breakfast or lunch spot get yourself a Tudor's Biscuit from the nearby location. They specialize in breakfast food and are a West Virginia institution. For a lunch or dinner consider The Cold Spot as they have excellent wings, sandwiches, salads, appetizers, and a nice beer selection.
