Reviewed: Played on:Jun 14, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Seems to have some varying shots
-Elevation changes
-Plenty of obstacles and tight lines
-Possibly some updating in recent years
-Water is in play at times

Cons:

-Virtually no signage
-Seems minimally upkept. Overgrown is a conservative description.
-Multiple basket types
-Cacti and thorns all over the course. If you don't layup your shots, then expect to have a not fun experience playing fetch.
-Possibly missing baskets.

Other Thoughts:

This seems to be a course with some activity, but I have hard time seeing a reason to venture out of your way for this one. If you don't know a local to guide you, then be prepared to walk in circles looking for baskets. There is no map readily available

TLC Needed 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 11, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Its different from any course I ever played.
Elevation changes, and looks like they are reworking tee pads,at at most baskets an arrow will guide you to next tee.
Two locals told us how the 1st 5 holes played and it really helped.

Cons:

Lots of sand,no map, very old baskets.
Wish all baskets had the next tee arrow it would def. help.
Missed one hole (14 i think) and almost passed up 18.

Other Thoughts:

I hope they continue the tee pad progress the course has potential.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 24, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice shot variety with a nice range of obstacles from ob, to water, to low ceilings. The layout of the course flows well.

Cons:

Sand, lol. Some of the baskets have rusty chains, but i'm thinking that will change soon. It's hard to spot some of the tees to the next hole.

Other Thoughts:

With someone there who knows the course, you will have a great first time. It's the best course i've played on so far. I couldn't find a good spot to park, so knowing someone who has been there would benefit you. Couldnt find a map, but the course had a layout change recently so they might put one up soon. I love this course. I'll definately be back.

Not the same course anymore... 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 26, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Excellent shot variety.
Lots of terrain changes.
Great flow. Easy to follow.
Good average hole length for any skilled player.
Front 9 and back 9 start & finish at parking lot.
Nice teepads going in.
Nice big pavilion at course headquarters.
Almost total isolation.
FUN course to play!!

Cons:

Baskets are modeled after older Mach II's, so they aren't the greatest catchers.
No signs above ground to be seen from far.
No benches or bathrooms near by.

Other Thoughts:

This course has undergone a major renovation. Many of the original holes have been either changed or eliminated all together. New land has been incorporated so the course is more spaced out and the average hole has been increased drastically to roughly 270 feet per hole.

Now that the tee pad problem has been addressed this course is REALLY lookin up!! It is a totally different course now, so come give it a try.

The area is not nearly as bad as some make it out to be. The foot traffic of all the disc golfers playing there lately have seemed to keep the bad element away.

Abysmal is a Good Word 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 10, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-The course has 18 Baskets.
- Easy Parking
- Short Course

Cons:

- Sand sand sand and more sand.
- Cacti litter the ground. 3 or 4 became stuck in my shoes and socks
- Although it does have 18 baskets, you can only find about half of them without a map.
- There is no course map.
- Tee boxes are sand, terrible for anything but a stand still shot.
- The course is so overgrown I skipped 4 or 5 holes.
- One of the holes over water is a 300 ft blind shot. Honestly not even worth throwing.
- It is in the worst part of Hattiesburg.
-Litter is everywhere and just keeps piling up. Found a purse with the contents dumped out. Im sure someone stole it.
- The bugs were abundant. No amount of bug spray will help.
- The course is right down the street from a chicken plant. So it stinks, but you can get used to it.

Other Thoughts:

I have gone back again and again to this course, hoping that it will give me any reason to like it just a little bit. And it cant. Its almost a health hazard to play it. Play Paul B. Johnson, or Tatum Trails instead. DUNCAN LAKE IS NOT WORTH IT.

Waste of Baskets 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 25, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

You will have the course all to yourself.

Cons:

By far the worse course I have ever played. It is next to a lake that has overgrown shrubs and plenty of mosquitoes for your fight with the course. It is mostly in the sand with cactus on several holes. If you can find all the holes you will be lucky. Tee boxes are overgrown and uneven. The course is in a suspect part of town and littered with beer and whiskey bottles not to mention the occasional condom you will step over. Don't go past 3pm unless you are looking for drugs.

Other Thoughts:

Waste of time and baskets, do not stop if you are going thru Hattiesburg. Go to Tatum and enjoy your round.

Sand, cacti and lizards... oh my! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 26, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Fairly well maintained for what seems like an under-played course
-Several holes with water
-Decent variety
-Not crowded at all (I didn't see another soul)
-Nice flow to the course

Cons:

-Very sandy
-Be careful on Holes #9 and #10, cacti abound. These hard to see little fellas have inch long spines that WILL penetrate a shoe (and/or a finger)
-Hole #9 is a 300 ft. hole with 270 feet of it over water AND you cannot see the pin from the tee
-Dirt tees are more like deep sand tees... tough to get a good plant for a long throw.
-Fairly short holes
-I don't remember any benches or trash cans at the tees (there may have been 1 or 2)

Other Thoughts:

Despite being skewered several time by unruly cacti, (by the way, why are there cacti growing wild in MS?), getting sand in my everywhere and having to put up with a couple of ridiculous holes, I enjoyed this course. There are several things that could be improved upon on this course but if you're in Hattiesburg don't miss the chance to play this one!

Dunk In Lake[Number 9, number 9, number 9...] 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 2, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Duncan Lake DGC is the as-yet-unloved, dressed-in-hand-me-downs younger sister of Tatum Trails that just needs some firm, patient attention to make her glow with appeal.
This property was once a sand and gravel pit, and the powers that be decided the best way to deal with the massive hole in the ground when the company folded several decades ago was to dam it and fill it with water. Until the DGC went in, it mostly saw use as bankside fishing grounds and a weekend party spot. Because of the sandy soil, it plays much better after heavy rains than surrounding courses.
Every feature of the land and lake come into play. Sandy washes and dunes, elevated peninsulas and swampy inlets, grassy park fields and intimidating vegetation all have their prevalence on a wide variety of throws. The drives are quite evenly shared by straight, left and right approaches, and the layout runs counter-clockwise.
#1--a dozen mature trees lie between the tee and basket, requiring a hopeful line drive or a risky right hyzer above the fence, over the road.
#2--a short right dogleg with some brushy vegetation almost blocking your view of the pin.
#3--a low-ceilinged tunnel shot with the swampy end of an inlet in front, back, and to the right of the basket, which is on a small rise.
#4--a drive across a sandy dip in the landscape, with the basket in the open by the pavilion.
#5--a real beast, with the basket hidden behind a huge oak and two smaller ones. Just behind the basket is the lake, with windows in the shoreline shrubbery right where you'd hyzer in from either side.
#6--tosses across a sandy wash to a basket near interior trees.
#7--another tunnel shot, bending right to a pin located on a sandy hill, with the lake immediately behind and right of it.
#8--a short, sharp dogleg right to a basket hidden in a pocket of heavy vegetation near the shoreline.
#9--though this drive is only 300' long, it crosses 290' of water: the basket sits 10' on shore, in a group of tall mature hardwoods. The front of the teebox hangs over the water. Time to panic! As theres no mando its possible to stay left, on land, but its bogey terrain.
#s10 & 11--more interior sandy and treed washes, which come as a relief after the #9 freakout.
#s12 & 13--though short, these two holes have swampy ground to the left and an upslope with trees on the right, with the lake just behind that.
#14--the lake peeks through mature trees on the left, the swamp looms on the right, and the pin sits at the end of a peninsula, with some fortunate heavy backing shrubbery. This hole is a geographic oddity in that you walk by the basket first, on the way to the tee.
#15--throws from the edge of the shore across 100' of water to the grassy parklike area of the last 3 holes.
#s 16-18--these are mostly open affairs, allowing some freeform teeshots compared to the tight drives required on most of the other holes. #s 16 and 18 tees are near the fence, #17 near the walking path.
The teeboxes are defined by bricks buried end-wise in the ground, with the distance and map of the hole beautifully rendered in enamel paint on the bricks. Under each basket is another brick with a next-hole arrow pointing EXACTLY where the next tee is. We found this out the hard way by going on a 10 min. hunt for #8, only to walk back to the arrow and find the tee barely 30' away.
The course is nicely isolated, though you will occasionally have fisherfolk pass through---sometimes in their 4x4s.

Cons:

Vegetation. Hawthorne trees, thorny vines, blackberries and---surprise!---cactus here and there among the sandy dunes.
Amenities. Literally nothing except a trash can somewhere around #6[half full, and looks like its been that way for years] and the picnic pavilion[no water or bathrooms].
Tees. Most people other than Southern coasters won't like the footing in the sand[it inhibits runups somewhat], but it won't slip out from under you wet or dry [unlike dusty cement or wet rubber]. #15 tee is a one-step drive.
Navigation. As yet theres no map, so find the first tee by the sign at the entrance. Because the tee signs are level with the ground and there's hardly any grass, visual clues to the next tee are nonexistent. The next-tee arrows under the basket are critical to a well-paced first round.
Water. Not really a con except for #9, which is basically a pro hole---all water. #s 3, 5, 7, 8, 14 and 15 could all reach the water and be unrecoverable, as the lake is deep in most spots except the swamps.
Like all southern courses, sauna-like and viciously buggy in the intemperate season.

Other Thoughts:

This course obviously gets very little play compared to Tatum, yet its the same distance from USM campus, and really just needs some love and trimming to be a great addition to the area.
A quickie mart and grocery store are just 1/2 mile to the north.
