Local WV Gem 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 17, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

+ 18 Hole Course: Innova Discatcher baskets have yellow bands which are highly visible from a distance. They catch putts well.

+ Practice Green: Beside of the main parking lot is a putting green with two practice baskets roughly 90' apart. This is a great place to warm up your putts and approaches.

+ Space for Field Work: The back half of the park really opens up if you'd like a place to practice. The field across from #18 is my personal favorite place to practice drives.

+ Fun and Challenging Layout: Course design by 4X World Champion Johnny Sias. Lots of variety in shot shaping, distance, and elevation.

+ Short and Long Tees - The short tees are all concrete with appropriate length and texture. Signs denote distance and local sponsors. Long tees are all playable at the time of this review but are currently unfinished.

+ Alternate Pins: Most holes have alternate pins that add variety for locals that play the course often.

+ Signature Holes: Several holes are especially fun to play and could be considered signatures...
#5 - Short par 3 with a beautiful partially wooded fairway.
#6 - Elevated tee box with a drive that crosses Buffalo Creek.
#10 - This basket on a rock is an unforgettable pin position.
#12 - Big downhill run that requires speed control.
#13 - Uphill pull with basket resting on a natural mound.
#18 - Long finishing hole with elevated pin.

+ Proximity to Other Courses: Eleanor's sister course is Valley Park in Hurricane, West Virginia. Playing both in a day is very doable and they compliment each other well. Other quality parks are within 30-40 minutes of Eleanor including Rotary, Barboursville, Wine Cellar, Redeemer, and Coonskin.

+ Park Setting: This park is home of the Putnam County Fair and features a variety of extras for visitors. Aside from the disc golf course you'll find a basketball court, baseball fields, a soccer field, stables, shelters, public pool, snack bar, a playground, rest rooms, an amphitheater, and 18 miles of trail systems. The park is popular for trail running and mountain biking.

+ Disc Golf Club - The Putnam County Founding Flyers is the local club that organizes leagues, tournaments, and work parties. Events are well organized and fun to play. Newcomers are always welcome to play in any club events. Check out the Putnam County Classic if you like to compete in tournaments as this is the biggest event held in the area.

Cons:

- Drainage: This is NOT the course to play after significant rainfall. The back half of the park floods in the spring and you may encounter some standing water on a few fairways. Slopes can be slick and muddy so check the forecast before making the trip.

- Navigation: Most of the course flows well but there are a couple transitions that are tricky for out-of-towners. The most notable is #13 to #14. Note that #13 is your last hole in the woods. Follow the trail left of the pin and look for directional signs down the hill towards the stables. Once you reach the wood line near the stables long tees will be to your left and short tees will be to your right.

- Maintenance: This park was designed, installed, and currently maintained by volunteers and donations. Occasionally holes may be rough or unplayable but bringing up any issues to the local park staff or disc golf club will typically resolve the problem in a timely manner.

Other Thoughts:

Eleanor Park is a local gem that provides three distinct sections to challenge players. The first third of the course is partially wooded. The second third is heavy woods that demands technical line-shaping. The final section combines big distance and open space where you'll break out drivers to throw as far down the fairway as possible.

This layout has potential to be one of the best courses in the state. Once long tees are in place and alternate pins are settled there will be enough variety for all skill levels from the beginning player to the touring pro and everything in between. When the entire course is finished I feel like the rating should be closer to an "excellent" rating of 4/5.

This is course I regularly volunteer to maintain so if there are any issues that come up please send me a PM so I can work to address it. Keep in mind this is a work in progress and the entire course has been designed, installed, and maintained using donations and volunteers. I can also guide anyone that would like to play here for the first time if my schedule allows.

Always a fun time 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 19, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Great layout with a good mixture of open vs wooded holes that are fairly evenly mixed. Clean course with nice baskets that are easy to see. Not a super busy park where you are fighting others to throw.

Cons:

Tee pads and tee signs missing on some holes. You can get turned around a couple times without "next tee" signs.

Other Thoughts:

This course is one of my favorite to play in the area. It starts out fairly open but then dives into the woods which really challenges you to keep tight lines. Hole 10 is awesome with the basket up on a huge rock for a death putt and really unique hole. Finishing holes really let you air out those big arms with a hanging basket at the end. Once the rest of the tee pads and all signs are installed this will make for a destination course in the area and will definitely improve the overall rating of the course.

Great Place to Play 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 16, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Great baskets. Good open hiking trails for the wooded holes. Beautiful park. Good forgiving holes in the woods as well. Nice mix of long and short.

Cons:

Holes 7, 16, 17 & 18 do not have signs on the teepads. Not every tee is a concrete pour, which isn't a problem, but a couple in the woods don't have a rubber mat placed for the tee, while others do.

Not clear where to go after 13. 14 has you come out of the woods, but the trail splits two ways, and it isn't clear which way to go to find the teepad.

Other Thoughts:

Honestly, I really like this course. It's a great place to practice some medium throws and the woods are open for the most part. Basket 10 is up on rocks, which is a cool challenge. A couple others are on top of hills too.

May reccommend some arrows or signs leading to the next hole. (there are some yellow arrows on trees which i believe are for this, but anyone would assume thats for the hiking trails too. its not clear)
