Yep..................She gone! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 4, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

-I would say that this is a good addition to the Asheville courses, but to me, most of them aren't very fun unless it's Richmond Hill or Jackson Park. But if you like short, wooded, and different, then you might like it here.

-It has some cool holes here. I like holes 1 and 2. #1 is a neat downhill ace run tucked into the woods. Hole 2 is back up and plays as a forced anhyzer. Holes 6 & 8 were good downhill putter shots. And #13 was my favorite hole. It's a fun uphill ace run that's half open/half wooded.

-Nice tee-signs. And I love tees marked by wood! So those are really cool I think. I just find that unique.

-The course kiosk is very helpful.

Cons:

-Thought process in designing some holes. Am I going to act stupid? Answer is yes!

#3/12: Guy #1: "Let's place a pad in the woods over there and make the fairway challenging by making this a flex flick shot!

Guy #2: "Yeah! Let's place the basket over there (literally angled 9 o' clock from the pad). And make a long pad down there (points to the right from where they are standing).
Least they made a decent long pad which is #12. Fun hole to throw a freedom on.

But hole 3 is terrible. The tee-pad is in the woods and have to throw a weird massive flex shot. Basket is hardly in the woods though. Good luck, as you'll be facing the woods at 12 o' clock. And don't even think about going toward 10 o' clock. You'll be stuck in the woods wishing you threw sideways at 9 o' clock. Might as well re-tee, or you'll spend 11 hours pitching out. (I'm kidding)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hole #5/14:

-Guy #1: Let's make this hole short, and difficult to birdie.

-Guy #2: Yeah! Look at all those trees! Think we should cut them down?"

-Guy #3: "NO! Let's make this a challenge! That's part of the fun!

#5/14: The tee-pads are next to each other and there is no fairway. None. You will hit a tree. And possibly, just possibly find one of the members of my neighbor's AWFUL grunge band sleeping/snoring in one of those trees. (Benny is not liable for your ears excessively bleeding)

High school kid: "Disc golf isn't for me!" (kicks a few trees)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-#7/16: Well, #7 has a nice fairway for most of the hole. But the green is a cluster of trees and you have to throw around many rows.

#16: BLEH! CA-HOUGH!!!! (Passes out). This hole is across the road and plays ON the roundabout you drive past. Hole could also use a good bit of maintenance as there are many bushes to the left side that are ready to eat a good shot.

Guy #1: "Never been done before! Let's make #16 over the road! AND place the tee-pad ON the roundabout!"

Guy #2: Yeah! It's a bigger challenge! That's always good!

Guy #3: "Let's make this hole as annoying as possible! The SKY'S the limit!"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#11/18:

Guy #3: "I GOT A GREAT IDEA! Massive anhyzer over the trees, and round the road, and into the woods!"

Guy #2: "Most designers in the other regions of NC would make a lane but lets not!"

Guy #1: "We could make a long pad down there (hole is over the road). So it's over the road AND around the road!"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-Nope, we're not done. We are just starting. Open up the red bull! While the grass is cut regularly, the branches are hanging pretty far downward.

-A lot of holes play over roads. #10/17 was a fun hole, so I thought that was justified, but the others, not really.

-It can be extremely hard to navigate. I never found #15. Took me a few minutes to find #7's pad (the sign fell off). Also did a bit of backtracking to get to the next pad.

-I really can't stand the design for #7/16. The fairway is open and then it shuts once you get to the green. Easy par though. And the fairway closing when you get to the green is approximately the sound of a prison cell door slamming.

Other Thoughts:

-Look, I know that this course isn't a tourney course and all. But I've heard about high school tournaments/events out here on the course. The design of most holes COULD be good! But make a fairway!

-I do not recommend this course. A lot of people at WCU I know that play do not like this course.

-But, the first two holes are good. #13 is a really great par 3, and #10/17 is a fun open hole tucked into a wooded area. Just a typical short wooded course problem. Some corny fairways!

-One last thing, with the space available, this course was put into the perfect area. But the course is not looking good. Many holes look a little weird or not all that attractive to newcomers.

Back to High School 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 13, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Layout - It's a shorter course that's pretty well rounded on High School grounds. For what it is I think the designer has done a good job of getting 18 holes in with the area available.

There's a solid mixture of open/wooded holes as well as holes that start in the open then go in to the woods & vice versa. There's also a some holes in the 300' range and one at 375' that let you get a drive in.

The individual hole layouts give you a chance to use a variety of shots and work on your short game, approaches. I used BH, FH and OH shots quite a bit.

There's actually a good amount of elevation change here and it's used very well, you'll have to shape shots on top of going down or up.

Atmosphere - It's on high school grounds but the grounds are pretty well landscaped. There was never anybody in my way even though I played during school hours.

Equipment - The baskets are in good shape and there are tee signs.

Cons:

Layout - The course is limited by the space available and while I think it is better served by having 18 holes some holes are very forced. There's some holes that are stuck in patches of trees that are ridiculously tight.

This course is aimed towards younger and beginner players and some of those tight holes are not the best way to teach players imo.

There's also a bit of a danger factor here which is why you're not supposed to play during school hours. Many holes are near walking paths, school buildings and roads. One hole even crosses right over a road (I threw directly over a cop car.)

There is a drawback in that you use some baskets multiple times. As well as some of the fairways cross.

Not a lot of risk/reward here, even with a bad drive it's still pretty easy to make par. Not many multiple routes either.

Equipment - The tee pads are framed but natural. Not the best not the worst, just not level in all places.

Atmosphere - It's on high school grounds, so be on your best behavior. I know it's not a con for everybody but it's going here just because there are restrictions on your activities and how you can act.

Not the most scenic part of Asheville either just because you're at a high school. Not the secluded mountain feel that you get at some other courses in the area.

Other Thoughts:

I think this a superb course to teach people about disc golf and a nice place to learn the sport and work on your short game.

However for more seasoned and skilled disc golfers this is definitely not a course you have to play.

Keep in mind at all times that you're on government property and representing the dg community. The designer which is a teacher at the school has done a good job of creating something positive for our community and let's not ruin it.

Under construction 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 8, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- A couple of challenging drives with doglegs, woods, distance, and some moderate elevation changes. The high percentage of right turns on the fairways forced me to develop my forehand drive, for which I'm thankful.
- Serves its intended purpose well as an introduction to the sport for younger players. On several of my runs through the course, I've run into high school kids cutting their teeth, which was nice to see.
- Convenient for those in the area (i.e. 5 mile radius or so) to hone their skills.

Cons:

- Very confusing layout, not mapped well at all. I met a fellow who explained that the best way to play the course was to simply ignore the signs and sort of "make your own course", which is probably true.
- Hole 4 is just silly, with no discernible fairway to the basket. I might as well go in my backyard and play plinko golf with the trees there.
- The grounds are a multi-use facility, including walking trails, making for potential hazards. However, there aren't often enough people out there to make this a big problem.
- Being on high school grounds, rules state that use is restricted to after-school hours.

Other Thoughts:

It is what it is: 6 holes set up on the grounds of a local high school. If you're looking for a challenge, one of the best courses in the country is just down the road.

Most Improved in NC 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 20, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

*Since the course is on school property it can introduce many new high school students to disc golf. How cool would it be to play disc golf for PE class or to go out and shoot a round during lunch?
*Elevation changes on every hole, even though most are moderate. Perfectly balanced with 9 Up/ 9 Down
*A creative way to make use of limited space to squeeze in a course.
*Terrain- lots of nice trees with a few grass fairways
*Online map and score card

Cons:

-Only 11 baskets: They did the best they could with limited space by putting in 11 baskets, but since 7 holes share baskets the layout is rather funky
-Navigation: Do NOT go there without the map! Even when you have a map it can take some work to figure out. I seriously doubt that someone could figure out how to play the course without a map. Also, a few baskets are hard to see from the tee (3, 7/16, 9, 11/18)
-Safety issues: The combination of lots of new teenage players throwing near places with other students close by has potential for trouble.
-Detractions from beauty: Being near school buildings and the parking lot takes away from the feel of natural beauty.
-Tees: A bit short and the dirt and wood chips are adequate but not the greatest.

Other Thoughts:

Course Level: Red (most suited for Juniors and Intermediate players rated 850).
The hole lengths are sufficient for a Red level course, even if they lack some variety. 6 of 130-199/ 11 of 200-299/ 1 of 375. Hole 12 has a length of 375 ft., and since it's uphill it has an effective length of 410 ft. making the hole a Red CR par 4.

~The course is only open to the public outside of school hours.

Enka is now 10 times better than the original 6 hole version, so kudos to those who implemented the upgrades. The course does its job as a school course to get high schoolers into disc golf, but more serious players will quickly graduate to nearby Richmond Hill.
