Under construction 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 21, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

It's growing, with a mix of wooded corridors and long field shots. The park wraps partway around a beautiful lake, and the lawns are well-kept, not just the fairways. The park trails are popular with cyclists and dog walkers, but the course design minimizes interference between them and disc play. Tees have been upgraded to artificial grass mats.

Cons:

Under construction (21 June 2017). Some fairways in the woods are little more than mud tracks from construction equipment. All or nearly all the tees have an orange steel tee sign, but it's blank, except for gang tagging. The main course sign, in the middle of the park, has been heavily tagged. It's still readable, but only shows 9 holes -- I played about 12 there, and I probably missed some. Two tees point into the middle of a roped-off area closed for reseeding; I don't know where those baskets are. I found no numbers on any tee or basket. I did several holes in order, but sometimes I couldn't find the next tee, so I walked around until I found one I wanted to play.

Other Thoughts:

This was my first time on any course in Europe, so all I can compare it to is the 15 or so courses I've played around Washington State, USA. And I'm no pro -- I pat myself on the back if I can make a driver fly 260 feet. But I know a course that needs work when I see one. And there is work being done: new fairways hacked from the woods, new baskets, tee pads... It just needs more.
Riding a rented bike there from downtown was not a waste of time; any time spent throwing is time well spent. It would have been much better if I'd had a local guide, but I was solo. Growing conditions are so good here, with loooong summer days and frequent rains, that by late July the reseeded areas may be lush with thick grass, and the local club volunteers could turn it into a solid 4-star course. I hope so. And if life brings you to Tampere, and you happened to bring a few discs, it sure beats sitting around.
