more than fair

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 16, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

-design makes good use of the interesting terrain
-lake, sparse but well-used trees, minor elevation, hole 1's hanging basket
-long & short concrete tees
-long & short basket positions
-Mach V baskets in good condition
-course map & practice basket
-plenty of parking & restrooms

Cons:

-signage could be better
-hole 8's hidden green is cool but tough to find for the first timer
-certain areas can be very muddy or marshy after a rain
-mostly open so there's not much shot shaping required

Other Thoughts:

Fair Park's disc golf course is a lot better than I was expecting for a small town, city park course. The layout plays around the park lake which potentially comes into play on as many as 5 out of 9 holes. There are two sets of concrete pads and two basket positions on every hole.

The hanging basket on hole 1 is a nice welcome to the course and then hole 2 is one of the highlights. The long tee throws across a small portion of the lake to a basket nestled into a small group of trees. The next few holes play back and forth through a mostly open area and holes 3 and 5 throw toward the lake. The long basket positions on those holes can bring the lake into play if you go long.

There is a bit of a walk from hole 7 to hole 8 that would benefit from a sign pointing the way. There are two more random baskets along the walk that maybe the locals play as extra bonus holes. The area around them was pretty overgrown so it didn't look too inviting. Hole 8 has a cool green that is down a small embankment close to the edge of the lake. It is hidden from view of either tee and the tee signs only have numbers (no maps) so that one was tough to spot. Some better signage all around would be a great upgrade for this course.

The short tees are short enough for beginners and families (averaging 270') and the long tees are long enough that more experienced players won't be completely bored (averaging 345'). When I played the baskets were in a mix of long and short positions (long on 2, 4, 6, 7, 9). That variety is cool for the locals.

At this point I have played all but one of the courses between DFW and Amarillo along Highway 287 and this one might be the best place to stop and catch a quick round. There are better courses in Wichita Falls but Fair Park is closer to the highway and is a fairly quick 9 holes.

Great Course for 9 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 1, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

I really love this course and the layout. Holes 1 and 2 are great. Good baskets signs and tees. Great use of space trees and water. This is one great park and course for a little town. Right off the highway so its a must stop if your here.

Cons:

There is 1 huge walk near back and 8 is blind back into the trees but really fun.

Other Thoughts:

Great fun course I wish it was more than 9. Who ever laid this out did a wonderful job.

Fair Park Disc Golf 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 18, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

My three pros:
-Really cool first 2 holes with the elevated basket and over the water shot. Some cool use of the lake by putting the baskets nearby.
-I went on a beautiful sunday around noon and there was noone else playing the course and very few park-goers. This made it easy to play through without worrying about hitting somebody.
-Nice variety between holes, i didnt feel like any holes were repetitive due to the use of the terrain and various obstacles (other than basket placement -see below)

Cons:

My three cons:
-Only 9 holes. There are dual tees at all holes but I felt the short tee was a little too short most holes so i didnt bother playing those. There are long basket positions shown on the course map but no long baskets so maybe thats something to come? With longer baskets added playing both baskets from the long tees could be fun, but there may not be space for more baskets.
-Many baskets were sunken down next to the lake which got a little old after a while. Rather than placing the basket at the top of the hill on #4,5,6, or 8 it is out of sight at the bottom of the hill close to the water.
-Tee pads dont have signs but a colored hole number. With many baskets somewhat out of sight becasue theyre sunken down I had to walk the hole a few times to find the basket.

Other Thoughts:

I was weary coming to the park on such a nice weekend day a i figured it would be crawling with kids and fishers but I only had to wait breifly for some walkers on #2. The park is nice but could still use some additions. I'd think a sign pointing to go down the road for #8 would be helpful. Im not sure what space is there but id think a couple holes could be added next to #8, maybe using the big storage trailers somehow. Also, i could see the potential for an awesome shot across the lake from behind #8 basket to the #6 basket, or something like that. I think this park was pretty fun, this "Fair Park" was a little nicer than the fair park i'm used to in Dallas...
