Worth the trip drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 10, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

*Multiple Tees
*Variety of challenges for every hole
*Multiple Baskets
*Well marked path
*Incredibly well maintained

Cons:

*Could lose a disc on almost every hole (especially for beginners/lost a disc)
*Slight confusion for white course basket 18 (Basket 17 for white is gold 18)

Other Thoughts:

One of the reviews on here said something a kin to "I shouldn't have to convince you to play, you should have to convince me why you haven't" and after reading that we went up that day. It was about an hour and a half away, and we will make the trip again and again. This course is beautiful. You start outside in the open and can let it rip. The middle holes take you on a journey through the wooded area of the park. I think I could honestly just walk this course and have a great time. Super cart friendly. If you can make a trip here it is definitely worth it.

White + Gold = #1 in Chicago Must Play 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 26, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Round Lake was developed by a true professional designer and it shows. It's one of a kind and you won't see this at any other course. There is a shorter White layout that is more casual friendly while the Gold layout will absolutely bust your chops. The front 9 flows perfectly in unison. The back 9's split off with 6 of the Gold holes playing separate from White.

Prairie courses can be frustrating but they do a great job mowing wide fairways in the front. You get to start out by letting some rips in the open.

There are a ton of really good wooded holes. The White holes are more of deuce or die while the Gold course has a ton of par 4's and 5's. While the White course is much shorter it's still really fun to play.

The land is really good in the back. Very wooded with water and elevation coming into play. The slight elevation was used wisely and water hazards make it very interesting on several holes.

If you play both courses you'll throw every single disc if your bag and every type of shot possible.

Cons:

My only issue is lack of great tee signs. The signage is very good to navigate and has vital info though. It's just missing descriptive tee signs. The kiosk has great color maps that offset this.

This is more of a heads up than anything. I did not deduct any points as I believe it's part of the game.

In the Spring the course can be wet and muddy in spots. While many courses are closed this time of year it's a bonus to be able to play it. You just have to deal with the mud.

In the Summer mosquitos can be an issue. This is Lake County and lots of water around. Be prepared with bug spray.

Other Thoughts:

Keep in mind that the disc golf course was there prior to the path/bridge being installed. The designer did a great job utilizing the land while making it safe to play. The line of sight is very good on all the holes playing near the path.

If you are visiting for the first time play White 1-9, Gold 10-14, and White 10-18. This will allow you to see every hole on the course except #15 Gold.

The park district does a great job of maintaining this course.

Hard to improve 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 9, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Just about everything!

Great 2 course park White & Gold (advanced)
Cement Tee Boxes properly placed here with plenty of long holes to let em rip. Some wooded holes to keep your finesse game working too. A few Baskets have flags for wind direction or to make locating baskets behind hills or vegetation easier to spot.

All holes are well groomed by Park District and bolstered by local players. The first 6 either course are all grass with wood hips under baskets. Accept Basket 4. Then enter wooded section for both courses. Fairfield white shorter tosses Sqwaw Gold long game holes both in tree lined holes with a few fairway trees. A few over water tosses on both courses; a Creek (Sqwaw) and a couple small ponds. Then finish on open wide holes with clearly marked outta bounds wetlands. Oh yes wear water tight shoes or if weather permits wear sport Sandler or play barefoot if you're into earthing.

You should see lots of wildlife: deer squirrel chipmunks birds and Hawks are common as well as garter snakes crawdads and snapping turtles

Cons:

Can be wet on fairways if it's rained recently. Come warmer season bring your favorite bug spray. And Tick check often especially if you are in the rough often.

And this place is popular so expect many other players on those nicer days especially when nicer days are rare

Other Thoughts:

I can't say enough great things about this park. I should lie and say it's horrible to keep it all for myself.

In summer there are map/score sheets at kiosk by parking lot.

A few pdga tournaments every year as well as some local organized tourneys

Awesome! True rating 4.85 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 2, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Signage: There are signs to indicate where to go to get to the next hole as well as signs at each box indicating the hole number and which course (Gold or White) the pad is used for.

-As confusing as it is, this course basically has 2 courses that can be played, sometimes sharing pads, sometimes sharing baskets, and other holes not sharing anything between Gold and White. This is nice because if you want a solid, quicker round you can come throw white and if you are in for a more aggressive round you can throw Gold

-Concrete pads on all holes.

-A few garbages throughout the course, but not on every hole.

-Distinct, wide fairways on the open holes, all of which are well maintained.

-Awesome hole designs throughout the whole course. This course has some truly amazing holes. The more open holes in general require plenty of distance and offer very wide fairways to minimize the need to go searching through prairie grass. The wooded holes are what set this course apart and distinguish it as what it is, a phenomenal course.

-Requires every shot in your bag...uphill, downhill, right, left, heavily wooded, wide open, S-curve shots, finesse shots, long holes, ace runs, over water, underwater (okay maybe not but may as well)....Gold is a beast and a must play for anyone with experience.

-Decent baskets that all seemed to catch well

-Awe factor = walking up to a hole and getting that overwhelming feeling of amazement. This is a factor out here, several wooded holes are mind blowing and absolutely beautiful on this course. Tough to decide which is the signature, with several holes representing top caliber appearance and play.

Cons:

-Signage: I know I had this as a positive as well; it is great they have a sign marking the hole, but the signs out here give you no map. If it's your first time playing a course and you have never played a 650ft heavily wooded hole involving considerable elevation changes as well as twists and turns without a map let me tell you...it sucks. This unfortunately does happen on several holes throughout the course. Don't get me wrong, those long wooded holes are what make this course, but some upgraded signs with accurate hole maps would definitely help minimize the needless walking to scout every bomber wooded hole.

-Way too many trees on a few of the long wooded holes. When already in the woods with a somewhat narrow fairway snaking to a basket over 600ft away, the last thing you need is several trees in the middle of the fairway to tightly work your way through. It is what it is and like I have said, it's these holes that make this course, yet taking out some of the smaller "filler" trees that rob good shots on these holes would only improve the course.

Other Thoughts:

To clarify my review, I only played the Gold tees and not White as I didn't have enough time for white unfortunately. Also, I have rated this course a 5, but my actual rating is 4.85. I rounded up instead of down because the current rating is lower than what I feel the true rating is of this course. Now that that is established, I have to say that I was majorly impressed with this course and it definitely bumped its way into my top 3 and questionably is the best course I have ever played. As I have said many times already, this course is centered on phenomenal wooded holes with a few decent open holes to satisfy the players that maybe aren't as technical. Plain and simple, if technical courses aren't your thing, you likely won't care for the Gold course much. Our biggest problem was deciding what to play between Gold and White after reading the reviews. My take is this: If you consider yourself an experienced player with good control, Gold is a very fun course you will enjoy. If you are a bit newer to the game or don't really seem to perform well on technical courses, play White as Gold will absolutely discourage you and beat you down. You should plan to play this course if you're anywhere remotely close to Round Lake. Drive out of your way to ensure you play this if on your family trip or whatever the reason may be. Let your boss know you will pay for the extra day in Chicago if he allows you to book your return flight 1 day later. I had a terrible round and lost one of my primary discs and still walked out of this course feeling like I just played a gem. This course is absolutely awesome and you should have played it yesterday already!

Long and sweet 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 2, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

There are so many amazing holes that would be the signature hole on many other courses. There are quite a few long bomber holes in the woods but each one has some very wide lanes that aren't impossible to hit. And you don't even need a huge arm to throw well on this course. They have a lot of elevation changes throughout and they do everything with each hill. There is a stretch from 10-15 that are 6 of the coolest holes I've thrown in a long time. Each one is wooded but with lanes, and the rough isn't the end of your favorite disc. Hole 18 is 900 ft so bring your arm.
The course is well maintained, there is a putting hole, restrooms and flows nicely. It starts out with a few open holes before going into the woods and coming back out at the end. There is a small creek that is a factor in 2 holes and there is a swamp on another. The variety that this course offers is top notch.

Cons:

There are not enough garbage son this course. For as long as it is, people are gonna be out there for a while and have trash. With that said it was very clean. The signage doesn't map out the hole (we did pick up a map before starting) and I feel every great course should have signs on each hole with a map and distance. The course kinda has 2 courses with white and gold (I played gold) that start together and separate at 9.

Other Thoughts:

**I feel this course should be a 4.75**
I'm giving it 5 because it currently stands just under that and there is no way I'd give it a 4.5 and bring it down from 4.67. This was such a fun course, from beging to end. Ok well the first couple in the open are nothing special but are still very good holes. This is a new favorite for me. Seeing as I live in Minnesota I won't be playing it much but I will go out of my way to hit it up again in the future.

Pros:

Two unique layouts designed for all skill levels. The shorter layout is called Fairfield White while the long layout is called Squaw Creek Gold. Terrain varies from open prairie to heavily wooded with some water in play. Out of bounds areas marked clearly even when water has dried up. This course is a nice hike and Goretex shoes are recommended.

The WHITE layout is designed for recreational and intermediate level players while the GOLD layout is designed for advanced and professional players. Some holes are shared between the layouts and have either 2 sets of concrete tee pads or 2 baskets on the hole. Both layouts are playable at all times. There are 24 different holes on the property.

For a Chicago Suburban course there is a variety of wildlife which include birds, deer, turtles, fish, and more. Goretex shoes recommended. Under growth is not very thick so looking for discs is not impossible.

Check both kiosks for carry along maps. The course is clearly marked and there are next tee signs on every hole. Several navigation signs in tricky spots as well.

Open all year.
Port o Potty on site. (April 1st to November 30)
2 new Port o Potties added and kept clean--Summer of 2016
No running water.
Bring bug spray during summer months.

This course has 2 layouts.
Beginer level White Course and a Championship Gold course for advanced and Professional level players. Great signage, concrete tee pads on every hole. Baskets are consistent throughout the course. Garbage cans are all over the park.

This is by far the best course in Lake County IL.

Cons:

It can get busy when its nice out, and be sure to bring bug spray in the summer months.

Pros:

Well designed course that provides the opportunity to use multiple types of shots. There are some open long holes and there are some super long wooded holes with fair routes to the basket. It is a fair course in that it is not only right friendly.

Nice tee pads, easy to navigate from one hole to the next. Good signage, benches in some locations. Plenty of garbage cans and it is always well maintained.

The regulars do a nice job of picking up garbage and Round Lake Park District is very open to suggestions.

Cons:

There are one or two spots that are low lying and could use some stone and drain tile to move water

Best in the area. 4.75 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 1, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The Squaw Creek Gold and Fairfield White layouts offer excellent variety throughout both courses with multiple par 4's and par 5's. Multiple OB water hazards and elevation changes that are unmatched in the greater Chicagoland area.

-Tee pads are grooved concrete and hold up well in bad weather conditions.

-Tee signs provide hole distances and clarification on the shared baskets/tees as needed.

-Next tee signs have been installed at points where navigation can become tricky if you don't see the signs.

-2 Kiosks in the parking lot provide scorecards/course maps.

-2 practice baskets with a little history.

-Overly generous wide fairways have been mowed to cut down on time looking for discs in the long prairie grass.

-Each hole offers a unique challenge. Easy birdie holes are few and far between.

-The first 4 holes are rather open as a reminder of what the old Fairfield used to be and how far this piece of property has come with help from Brett Comincioli, Chuck Kennedy and the Round Lake Area Park District staff members.

-Hole 5 is the beginning of the wooded holes. While fun, they are challenging and frustrating, but only if you don't stay on the fairways.

-Numerous signature holes. #10 and #15 always come to mind when asked. Both are par 4 and offer tight fairways in the woods with OB hazards, doglegs and elevation changes between the tees and baskets.

Cons:

All are kind of a reach but here goes...

-Tee signs leave a bit to be desired on the longer holes where the basket is not visible from the tee.

-Potential for safety concerns with the bike/walking path on a few holes. However, you would really have to try to hit someone with a disc while completely shutting out your surroundings to make this happen.

-Lack of benches.

-1 porta-potty in the parking lot.

-Only 1 DGCR entry for 2 distinct disc golf courses. While some tee pads and fairways are shared along the way, I believe there is more than enough separation to list Fairfield White and Squaw Creek Gold on individual pages.

Other Thoughts:

Full disclosure...this is my home course. If I could, I would give it a 4.75 because it is not perfect, but pretty darn close. I believe it is better than a 4.5.

-Bring along plenty of bug spray in the summer months. Check for ticks in the spring and fall.

-If you need to play a quick round, go for Fairfield White. However, if you are looking for a long, grueling round, Squaw Creek Gold is for you.

-Fairfield might be out of the way for folks looking to stay closer to the highway, it is absolutely worth the drive. I still think it is amazing that the Park District does not charge a fee to play a round here. Round Lake Area Park District, please take my money!!!

Pros:

2 courses, white & gold.

White course is definitely for beginners and amateurs. The Gold is definitely for the pros.

This place really tests all of your abilities from wide open shots that the wind can really play with to heavy wooded precision shots. I loved that they start you off out in the open, then you slowly make your way into the woods hole by hole. It's extremely well kept and has lots of new wood chips as of 9/26/2015.

Vintage Old baskets from the first disc golf courses in IL was a nice touch.

Good signage to direct you throughout the course. Would be tough to get lost here.

No mosquitoes when i played, as many others mentioned. It sounds like they're bad in the summer months only.

Cons:

A bit crowded on the weekends, but once we started moving through the course, the spacing improved.

I wish they had signage to show where the baskets are located off the tee. As a first time player of this course, I threw a lot of blind shots having no clue where the basket was.

Other Thoughts:

I learned the difference between a professional course and an Amateur course by playing this one.

This place is the real deal. Met some really nice players who helped us navigate too, since my Udisc app was not mapped correctly.

The course took 2 people about 1.5 hours to play.

Make sure you read the signs at the tee box, some holes share the same tee box, but have two baskets, others have two tee boxes and one basket. Be aware of this, there are signs telling you where to go though and the basket will be white/yellow if it's shared.

Great variety between woods and open fairways. Reminds me of one of my favorite courses, Blue Lake in Oregon.

Blew me away! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 17, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Being from New Jersey and having played many of the somewhat boring nine-holer's in this area, my expectations were not very high for this course, however what I found, was a gem, and I feel confident saying that this course can hold its own with the best of them.

Variety- With this course, you could definitely tell that tremendous thought was put into nearly each and every hole. This course will test each and every asset of an individuals game, and more! The long wooded par 5's, are well thought out, and require precise shots, and execution to score well. The marsh, and small runoff "ponds" are put into good use requiring a good mental game. Additionally, there is a very solid mixture of wooded and open holes, that add to the variety. Each hole is fair and some have multiple options from the tee, allowing players to throw a variety of different lines, depending on how aggressive they want to get.

Par is tough- I really enjoy courses such as this that make you work for your birdie on every hole, while par is often a very good score. These types of courses make players maintain a smart mental game throughout the entire course. Each shot is as important as the next, and each shot very rewarding if played properly.

Elevation- although elevation is not common in this area, the elevation on the property was put into good use, forcing a player to execute shots that are not often found in this area.

Two distinct layouts- Honestly, I believe that they would encounter no problems calling each of the layouts their own separate course. For the majority of the holes, each tee is completely different, and for each hole, there is a separate gold tee and basket, as well as a separate white tee and basket. These layouts are made very easy to follow by the color coordination of the baskets.

Creek- the creek and marshy areas were great additions to the course, providing much necessary OB and once again making the player think before throwing a drive.

Navigation- Next tee signs and the close proximity of most holes to one another allows this course to be easily navigable while still maintaining a proper flow.

Cons:

Most of the cons for this course relate to it being fairly new at the time I played it.

Signage: This relates to the tee signs. Each sign only displays the distance, rather than including a map as well, which would be very helpful, especially because most of the baskets cannot be seen from the tee. I am sure, given the local volunteers that this will be fixed overtime.

The first few holes are a bit too open for my taste, and do not require the thought process that many of the other wonderful holes that can be found on this hole present.

The course could have been made more interesting if the creek was brought into play more, but I understand the environmental hazards that this could have ignited.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, I was very pleasantly surprised with the caliber of golf that this course brings to the table. I believe wholeheartedly that this course can definitely compete with the best in its area and even its region. NOTE: In my book, the course is more of a 4.75, but due to the fact that most of the cons do not relate to the design and caliber of golf, I decided to give this one the bump to a 5.

Par 66 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 20, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Where else in the surrounding area can you find a course that is designed to challenge a Gold level player? Not many other places around this area have many 4s let alone 5s. The course design really forces you to throw specific lines if you want to score well. There is a great mix of open, wide wooded fairways, and tight gap shots to challenge any player. The development of the course as you play a round is great starting less demanding in the open into the tough wooded holes back out into the open and finishing on a beautiful par 5 you could Eagle or Bogey. The OB placement on the course really makes you think and play smart. If you try to advance too far up the fairway from a poor lie, you will be be punished. So play smart my friends. Play smart. There are some truly unique holes here and lines that you have not thrown. This course will force you to throw shots you are not used too.

Cons:

There are a lot of curving shots. I would personally prefer some more mandatory long, straight tunnel shots. The signage is not the best visually but it gets the job done. Lots of chuckers litter out here.

Other Thoughts:

A must play if you are driving through northern Chicagoland.

Fantastic Gold level course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 1, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

The Squaw Creek Gold course is easily best course I've played in Illinois, hands down. The course packs in everything you want in a disc golf and tops it off with an awesome challenge against your skills as a player. This is simply how a good disc golf course should be installed.

Each hole has a concrete tee (sometimes they're a bit on the small side) and is marked with tee signs, permanent OB markers, drop boxes, direction to the next tee and more. After playing for many years in Texas this is unheard of. Most of the time a new course in Texas has baskets, and that's it. Signs and tees come later. Not here. Everything that you could want from a disc golf course is there, in the ground and ready to go, except for restrooms on site.

Holes 1 - 5 play in the open prairie, but that doesn't mean they're easy. Hole 1 is easy, but after that you're finding the holes longer and longer, and harder and harder. Hole 4 is a crazy long downhill dogleg to an elevated basket with a flag flying high above it. From the tee, all you can see is the flag. The marsh factors in, but you'd have to have a pretty bad tee shot to end up in it.

Hole 6 takes you into the woods in the back of the property; a part of the park that had previously not been part of the course. For ten holes you're in the woods dreaming of open lines again. The woods are tight, technical, ingenious, dastardly and incredibly impressive. I played the course a week after it opened and it was clean and clear (save a handful of cigarette butts. Come on smokers, stop being jerks.). The elevation within the woods is impressive throughout. Only a few of the holes don't feature some elevation challenges. You'll be playing across valleys to over hills, teeing from elevated positions, or from the bottom of an incline. Every throw in your arsenal will be called upon. I even found myself throwing a scooby on one of the holes.

When you leave the woods you do so on one of the most beautiful holes on the course. Hole 16 gold offers an elevated tee to throw over the creek into a photogenic meadow. It's just perfect.

Holes 17 & 18 are back in the open prairie again. Hole 18 goes for over 900' with OB at the bottom of the hill to avoid.

The new layout of the course makes much better use of the parkland. In addition, it serves to keep disc golf out of the marsh in the center of the park. This is good for the park and good for disc golf. By the end of the summer the park is going to serve as a better wetland habitat for wildlife than it did before with constant disc golf intrusion. Well done to the designers!

Cons:

A restroom is desperately needed. Each time I'm out at this park I see women playing and the parks department is being a bit insensitive to their needs by not providing adequate facilities. I can't imaging an NT event out there without a permanent restroom.

Other Thoughts:

My hat is off to the parks department and the designers of this course. I loved the old layout and was worried about it being pulled, but the results have assuaged my fears. Now there are two fantastic, best-of-class courses only thirty minutes from my home. I'll be back again and again and again!

Chicagolands Finest! 2+ years drive by

Pros:

I changed my review from 4.5 to 5.0. The course gets better every time. Compared to some of the other courses I've given 5's the golf here is just as good.

5 benches added Spring 2015

Don't confuse this course with the former extinct one. A total redesign took 2.5 years to complete. The Round Lake Area Park District & Chuck Kennedy did a great job of creating a wonderful course(s).

The more I play this course the more I love it. The Gold course is such an amazing challenge. It's one of the toughest in Illinois. The White course is a lot easier and shorter but is still fun to play.

Hole #1 is located at the far north end of the parking lot. There are 2 huge maps located on the kiosks. Both have print outs of smaller maps that you can take.

There is a small practice area with 2 baskets. They are historical baskets so check them out.

For a Chicago Suburb course the land is great. There is open prairie, rolling hills, heavy woods, water, and more. Don't let the open front fool you. There are many wooded holes to come. This is a very scenic hike and you'll see quite a bit of wildlife at times (deer, birds, snapping turtles, & more).

As a local this course has a ton of variety. All layouts are playable ALL the time. You can chose to play the Intermediate level WHITE course which plays just over 5,000 feet. If you want a challenge you can chose to play the GOLD course which is designed for professionals. It's one of the toughest courses in Illinois playing over 8,000 feet. Once you get to know the layouts there are many options to play. Portions of the course share holes. On these holes there may be 2 tees and 2 baskets. Check the map!!

The tee pads are absolutely fantastic. They are 12 feet long and flared. 4 feet in the front and 6 feet in the back. They have a great finish to them and are not slick at all even when wet.

Course signage is awesome. There is a tee sign at every tee that has accurate distance and par. There is a next tee sign on every hole which points to either the gold or white tee. The course map is very accurate and.

The baskets are in good shape. Many are brand new Innova Discatchers. The rest are the old set which the park district repainted.

With so many holes in the woods the rough is punishing but it's not hard finding discs. The prairie grass was just mowed very wide. That's a bonus!

There is a great mix of par 3, 4, & 5 golf on the gold course. You'll have to bring an overall game to score well on this course. Unlike other area courses you can flat out smash a driver on a handful of the 18 holes. The wooded holes reward accuracy. The white course has some really fun shorter holes that anyone can enjoy.

It's super hard to pick a favorite hole.
My favorite open hole is gold #4. You can see the flag of the pin while standing on the tee. Super fun downhill smash with an elevated basket.
My favorite par 4 is gold hole #10. Fantastic corridor with out of bounds coming into play on the back end of the hole.
My favorite par 5 is gold hole #11. It's just nasty!
There are 2 really fun downhill shots. White #7 is great and you have the option to play to the gold basket too. Gold #16/White #12 sits on the to of the ravine. You throw across Squaw Creek. There's a really cool branch that you can go over or under.

There are 4 different areas of out of bounds marked. They used round poles and painted them white. You don't see that often and it'll come in useful when the water is gone. There are 2 drop zones that are clearly marked and defined too.

Cons:

The tee signs do not have a description of the hole.

Couple of tricky spots in navigation. One is after hole #9. This is where the White & Gold courses split from each other. After White #12 & Gold #17 it's a short walk around the corner and behind #5's Gold Tee. It can be hard to find. Check the map!!!

White #12 & Gold #16 can bottleneck at times. This is where the Gold & White course merge on the back side.

The course can get soggy in areas and the park district is going to be addressing those issues.

There is no water or restrooms at the course. There was no possibility to do a loop to get back to the parking lot. Bring your drinks/supplies with you.

Other Thoughts:

Plan to spend a day here. Check out the map and play both layouts. They are 2 totally unique courses.

Want to play a monster layout? Start with the stockade hole before #1. Play holes 1 thru 9. Play Gold holes 10 thru 14. Play White 11 thru 18. That's the 23 hole layout.

This is just the beginning. There are some finishing details and possibly more additions to this course.

You cannot cross the creek when playing Gold #7. You must walk across the bridge.

Please spread the word that on Gold #18 & White #17 on and left of the path is out of bounds. Players are throwing near #3's Gold Tee Pad on purpose.

During prime hours this course is super busy!

Check for ticks. They've been bad this year.

I can't state this enough times. Look at the map and understand what the layout looks like. Some holes have 2 tees while others have 2 baskets. Some holes share baskets and they are striped with Gold & White.

On Hole #7 you can play the Gold tee to the white basket or the White tee to the Gold basket as well.

Lake County is known for skeeters during the summer. Bring bug spray!

WalGreens, Sammie's, and Subway are located about a 1/2 miles North of the course.
