This course is easy to get to off the highway, and the baskets are very visible once you're on the fairgrounds.

If you use the map on this site/app, you'll have no problem finding the first tee, and navigating around.

The actual flow of this course is good, and the holes themselves are rather thoughtful (though I do think some branches need trimming since it's been almost 10 years since the course was put in)

The teepads were actually dry, and marked with tall yellow poles so they're easy to find from the basket.

Other than the trimmings, there are some huge challenges to playing this course.

Every time I've played this course it's been standing water. Not just puddles, not just post-rain, but over the shoes standing water. I don't know how or why but there is no drainage. In the warm weather, this means it's a haze of mosquitos. Literally. BRING MOSQUITO SPRAY

The pads are uneven gravel, but you're going to try and throw so fast to get out of the mosquitos you might not notice. The grass seems to stay tall (probably can't mow because of the water), but the tees are marked by yellow poles though, as mentioned above.

I thought I misplayed hole 3, but after looking at the map and now seeing the last review, yes it seems a couple baskets got switched.

For being in a somewhat hilly part of Texas, this course is unusually flat (maybe contributing to the ever-present standing water)

This would be a really not bad course if it was more playable. I don't like rating courses on the conditions of the day, but the water seems to just be an ongoing issue, and something you'll probably be able to expect. I'd even still rate it a 2 but the fact that that means the mosquitos are SO bad, and there for most of the year, makes me really not want to play this course again and that knocks the rating down.

But in the winter- sure it's a 2. If it's actually dry- 2.5!

-- Easy to navigate (once you locate No. 1, which isn't easy) except two big issues. See Cons. All tee signs (really just a post with a number) can been seen from the previous basket.
-- The few trees are used well.

-- No. 1 tee is missing. The last review before this one was in 2015, so it appears some things have changed.
-- Baskets 3 and 4 appear to have been swapped at some point. If you play as marked 3 tee to 3 basket and 4 tee to 4 basket, the fairways cross rather than being parallel. Playing 3 tee to 4 basket and 4 tee to 3 basket makes much more sense.
-- For what feels like it is intended as a beginners course, this is long. No holes are less than 300 feet, and No. 5 is 490 feet uphill.
-- Not much variety. Most holes are pretty flat with a few trees and require a straight throw on a hole in the 300-400 foot range.
-- Water. I played the day after days of torrential rain, so I was tempted to give this a pass, but others have mentioned the course does not drain well. And I saw more water on this course than I've seen on any other course. It was difficult to take two steps without water covering my feet.
-- Tee pads. The gravel surface isn't the best, but it's not terrible. The problem is the small size (3x8) and surrounding timbers. Given the length of holes, you should have room for a full run-up.
-- I saw no access to water or restrooms. Given the baseball fields, I assume there is something available, but likely only when the ballfields are in use.
-- No map.

-- When you turn off of U.S. 77 into the fairgrounds, IMMEDIATELY turn right onto a small pathway (before you reach the baseball field). No. 1 should tee from somewhere in that area, but the tee is missing. Best bet is to locate the No. 1 basket (near an outfield fence) and pick a spot. After that, you'll see each tee from the previous basket.
-- Elevation here is not terrible, but given the AMAZING elevation and beauty as you approach the property (especially if you are coming out of LaGrange heading north), it's disappointing how flat and uninspiring this is.
-- Three holes throw across roads/pathways. This isn't much of an issues; the park is likely either empty or so full that you can't play.
-- The Czech Music Museum of Texas is on the grounds. As soon as you turn off of U.S. 77, the museum is on your left.

Its nice to have a course in a small town, even just a simple nine holer. The course is well marked with numbered posts by the tee boxes and each basket has the correct hole number on it.

--There was an effort to add gravel tee boxes.

--It appears to be very well kept up. It was being mowed when I drove up.

--This course is long, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I think this is a con for two reasons: 1) Its the only course in town so I would think a beginners course would be better suited on the land and 2) With a long layout, the few trees that are there are not being utilized to their full potential. I think you could have some better holes with a length of 200-250ft instead of 350-400. Esp in the area of #1-4. I think you could've fit 6 shorter, better holes in that stretch

-The tee pads were a nice try, but they actually are worse than dirt pads IMO. The gravel is easy to slip on and they are very small - Maybe 5 feet long and 3 ft wide. Also, the tee posts are at the back left of the tee pad making for a very awkward drive. Esp when you're throwing max distance on every tee box.

--It felt like the whole course was drive as far as you can and approach 100-200ft to a pin with guardian trees.

--Not much Variety

--Course par is set like a beginners course but distance and layout disagree.

- A softball game may(probably will) interfere with play on hole one.

I really liked hole number one, it was really the only character on the course: A giant 325ish anhyzer with a huge tree canopy on the right just about 50ft in front of the tee, and the fence for a softball field which hugs the entire right side of the fairway. The hole is basically an L where you tee from the short side.

If I was local I would drive the 20 minutes to Smithville and Play River Bend if I could.
