Pros:
Frick Park (get your laughs out now) is quite the 9-hole adventure. Combining heavy tree cover with one large hillside, shot shapes and aiming points will be heavily tested on this above-average 9'er.
Hole 1 starts right off the parking lot (literally) and hole 9 ends close to it. Finding the next tee is always pretty easy except from 5 to 6, and yet there aren't any placements that feel "unsafe" except maybe 3's pad being directly behind 2's basket. MachX baskets are brand new and have the side covers so the DGA number pucks on top don't chew the rim of your putter.
Elevation all over. The only massive downhill is hole 1, then besides 2 and 4 you're either on the flat (5 and 6) or slowly fighting back uphill. 3 has a clump of group trees to throw around to the left or the right, but it so far uphill that you'll want to disc up from your standard 260ft hole. The baskets of 1, 7, 8, and 9 are all set on a slope to test your approach angle, and create scary downhill putts if you end up on the high side.
Your release angle control will be tested by the ceilings throughout. It begins on hole 3, covering the entire fairway, and the same goes for 4. Both 5 and 6 have a wide left side line, or a left-to-right s-curve line that has a ceiling to get under about halfway down, then 7 and 8 have higher ceilings, but more demanding lines to hit.
Hole 8 is an excellent challenge. Slightly uphill for 320ft, it's either a dead-straight tunnel shot with threatening branches left, right, and above, or hitting a precise hyzer line out to either side. Getting a drive in the circle shouldn't be taken for granted. It's not a hard hole, but it's a testing hole.
Cons:
The "required" line on 4, 5, and 6 is a left-to-right s-curve through and under some trees. This isn't awful, but maybe a different basket placement could have avoided this three-peat.
The road comes into play on 1, 2, and 4. It's avoidable, but also very easy to get onto/over. Fortunately, it's not an incredibly busy road.
No signage whatsoever besides the number pucks on top of the pins. Each tee has the number painted on it so not sure if that's coming soon or never.
Other Thoughts:
Once you see baskets on Cemetery Rd: continue to the top of the hill, take a left at the T-intersection, then go left at the fork in front of the water tower and park in the gravel there. Hole 1's pad is on the west end of the parking lot.
This is a fantastically designed 9-hole course on a piece of land that could have been wasted with a poor design. Imperfect, yes, but maximizes the land to it's full potential without putting it too close to roads. Heck, they even fit a par-4 in here! It's tough enough to tests multiple aspects of your game (always a plus in a city park 9-hole) and completes the experience with decent amenities. Definitely worth a stop on the way down I-70.
