Pros:
Girard DGC is a nice lil 9 holer in Girard Park, Lafayette. It's a very well used, and well loved community park with tons of activity going on, very close to University of Lafayette.
I thought it was a pretty cute course, and starts off really well. Hole one is a nice slightly downhill left-to-right shot. Pretty short, but so is pretty much every hole.
I disagree with some of the other reviewers about the repetitiveness. Maybe some trees have grown in, or some tees moved. A few were fairly short, with a little RHBH turn-overs, but there was some slight elevation change, some holes with right or left finishes, a little more hook at the end.
Tee pads were very worn mulch. They didn't look great, but I kind of liked them for the short step-throws. There were only a couple holes where I really had to rip one. Or at least decided to anyway.
Cons:
But as much as I liked this course, there were some obvious problems: the rest of the park. It plays VERY close to the other park amenities, including a very popular walking/jogging path, parking by the street, a playground, and a petanque court. I felt a little claustrophobic at times.
The tees were not marked, and the mulch has been very worn down. There's enough of a good flow to the course to find the next mulch bed, but some hole maps would certainly help.
Kind of a small issue, but if you use the scoring app on this phone, they have some pretty beginner-friendly pars uploaded. It's easy to edit your round to change it so you don't have a par 4 or 5 350'er that you "eagled."
Other Thoughts:
Even if you update the tee pads, baskets, add signs, this course would still only be a maybe 2-2.5. It's still a short 9 hole park course. There's not a lot to be extracted out of the property.
But I am very grateful that there's a beginner friendly place in Lafayette to get players introduced to the sport, because there are so many other good parks that you just need a big arm to play. Given the proximity of these holes to other park patrons, though, they might not be too friendly to beginners.
I liked playing this course. I really enjoyed it, despite not being able to throw a midrange after the second hole for some reason. I would love to play the course with some non-competitive friends and beginners.
