Color Me Surprised! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 13, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Multiple tee pads (3 on most holes) help make up for the fact that this is only a nine hole course. Can be played as 18 by just playing from different tees.
-Gold Tees offer a high level of difficulty that would satisfy experienced players, while White tees offer a good playing experience for beginners.
-Good variation between open and wooded holes.
-Wooded holes do not have thick brush or anything that would cause you to lose a disc.
-8th hole offers an elevated basket, which adds something that you won't find at most courses in the area.
-Course starts and ends fairly close to each other
-Elevated gravel tee pads on most of the holes.
-Good change in elevation, especially for an area of the state that is mostly flat.
-4th hole offers a mandatory area that is well marked out.

Cons:

-3rd hole has a fence with barbed wire that can come into play. If you end up over the fence, I am not sure there is a way to get it back.
-Could use increased signage: such as, signs at each tee stating the par and distance and tee color. No numbering on baskets to tell what hole you are on.
-No vending machines or water fountains around that I could find, which can be an issue when it is hot out.

Other Thoughts:

I have spent a lot of time in Union City over the last year, but didn't know up until a few weeks ago that they had put in a course at the local park. When I saw that it was only 9 holes, I was a little disappointed thinking that it was going to just be a plain boring park course with baskets sitting out in the middle of a field. However, when I finally got the chance to play, I was pleasantly surprised that this was not the case.

The course offers a variety of challenges for players of all types. Yet, it gives plenty of opportunities for players of any skill to succeed. I am not sure how many in the UC area have gotten into disc golf, but this course will give it the best opportunity to grow. After only playing this a couple of times, I would almost be willing to say that this is the best course in West TN, outside of Memphis. If they get the course expanded to 18 holes, and they are similar to the 9 they have now, then this will definitely hold that claim.

So much fun! Definitely worth playing, even if you need to take a longer drive to come try it. Kudos to those who built it, and I hope that it continues to improve!

Grove Creek Run is up and running 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 14, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Three tees for each hole: pro, rec, and beginner
-Excellent opportunities for long drives
-Interesting lines
-Good mix of wooded and open holes
-Beautiful old hardwood trees
-Holes 8 and 9 are really pretty
-Course flows well
-Mostly flat course
-Clean, well-maintained park
-Wind can be a factor
2015 UPDATE - Innova baskets are now installed!
- Hanging basket on #6 is very challenging
- A gate has been installed on the fence near the #7 white tee to allow easier retrieval of discs thrown over the fence.
- All shaded holes have tee boxes made of warning track material (very grippy and nice under foot).
2016 UPDATE - now 18 holes of pure golfing pleasure!!

Cons:

-Grove Creek is a nasty, disc eating, sort of creek that could come into play on many
-Out of bounds areas can come into play on most holes
-An out of bounds throw over the fence on holes 2 and 3 can be a difficult retrieval
-There is a bit of a walk to the first tee and back to the car from the last hole
-The drive from the #8 gold tee pad crosses a walking path and may require a bit of courtesy
-Wind can be a factor
-No trash cans (Pack it in - pack it out)
-No signage currently

Other Thoughts:

This course has expanded to 18 holes. The tee pads will be improvement from natural to athletic turf surface is an ongoing process. Signs will be coming soon (printing out the map will help play the original nine).
The gold tees present an opportunity to play disc golf at a higher level of challenge than most courses in NW Tennessee. As this course breaks in and matures it should be a top course.
