No Hand-Outs At Hanover 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 1, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

+ A well-detailed course map is on the central building.
+ Colorful tee signs at every hole have diagrams, par and distances.
+ The whole course takes place in a peaceful vast well kept field far away from all other features of the park with some breezy hills, scant trees and some power pylons. Losing discs is nearly impossible.
+ All tee pads are strong, level and extra-long concrete, but...

Cons:

- ...The tee pads at the open-field holes aren't so wide. I felt scrunched during my wind-ups.
- The baskets are too low to the ground, and some of them show signs of rust and/or structural damage.
- No 'next hole' signs, but the open nature of the course lends itself well to easily guessing where the next tee is.
- A few of the fairways brush up against private residences' backyards. Put extra thought into your disc selection.

Other Thoughts:

My favorite hole here to look at is 4 because the player starts at the top of a gentle hill and can see for quite a distance in all directions. It's far away from everything else, giving it a sense of peaceful isolation. My favorite hole here to play is 2 because it's another downhill throw except with a few trees to deal with. My least favorite hole here is 8 because of how flat, straight and wide open it was.

Those words could describe most of this course, though. Hanover is a bit TOO open to be terribly engaging for most players. The course designer seems to have understood this and created a few mandos using trees and pylons and a surprising amount of OB using the tree lines that denote property borders. All of that somewhat livens up the hole by hole difficulty. The distances contribute to that as well. The shortest hole here is 259 feet, so even birdies require a little effort. The longest hole is a par 4, 553 feet at hole 5. The course certainly has tons of space to work with, and the beginner who plays here will get good driving training, but it still lacks the tactical challenge that most other disc golf courses have. As a result, many may find this course boring.

But I should note that most of the criticisms I normally find myself making about 9-hole courses are absent here. There are no sports fields nearby. There is no danger of throwing into a road. The private residences aren't as close as with other courses. The grounds are well-maintained. And the fact that it appears to have been updated with tee signs since the previous reviews leads me to believe that there is some semblance of dedication to this course.

In closing, Hanover cleanly presents its distances and mandos for you to conquer. Bring your furthest fliers, and you will surely grab some well-earned pars and maybe the gratifying birdie or two if you land just right. It's not at all a technical course, but not every course ought to be. Maybe use it as a warm-up before heading to some other courses. Go nuts out there, but don't expect to be dazzled.

Open Park Course with some Tweaks 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 22, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Nine holes in an open section of a large multiuse park

+ Good use of mandos and OB to add challenge to an otherwise wide open park layout

+ Starts with a good first hole - wide open and slightly uphill, with the basket guarded by the tree line on the left (look for the white PVC post atop the basket, visible from the tee). It's hard to get into trouble on your first drive

+ Hole #2 tee is framed by a pair of trees. There's a surprising amount of elevation change down to the basket, so you don't have to rip it - making the initial gap pretty easy to manage. The day I played a narrow "fairway" had been mowed in the otherwise open field. A really nice touch to make it feel more like a disc golf course rather than just baskets placed in an open park

+ Hole #9 is a downhill gem for finishing. Note the writing on the tee post: the tower on the left is a mando, and the rocky drainage area in front of the green is OB. The basket itself is hidden by trees along the right. This is a pretty great hole, and a good finisher for a just-average park layout

Cons:

- Some pretty dull holes (#3, #5, #7); though typical for an open park layout

- Hole #4 is the first of several holes that have to deal with the construction of a major power line cutting across the park property. The piles of dirt and rocks are high enough to obscure the basket, but it's a very makeable short downhill hole

- Holes #6 and #8 are made almost unplayable because of construction

Other Thoughts:

~ Be careful to play #1 first instead of #6. The two tees are back-to-back where you start the course

OVERALL: An average public park layout, made better by mowed fairways and mando/OB tweaks, but hurt by a large power line construction project cutting through the property. The good news is that the construction won't last forever

Solid Scout Project Course Offers Some Enjoyable Throws! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 21, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

The Hanover Disc Golf Course was built as a scouting project by Evan of troop 302. The rudimentary sign doesn't divulge whether this was an eagle scout project or not. Either way, I'll give ole Evan some kudos for a pretty solid course.

The course starts and finishes directly behind the community center. There is a very crude sign at the start (Evan was a bit light on the sign front) with some course information. Holes # 1 and 6 tee off the asphalt here while the other seven have not long tee pads. The signs are basic poles with a house number on top. Some kind person has written the distance and par on the pole with sharpie-Thank you kind fellow player. The baskets are basic single chain models but # 4 and # 9 are double chain. I wonder if these are replacements?

The park is large and roomy with the disc course seemingly separated from the rest of the busy park (swimming pool, BB courts, playground and ballfields). It also has some elevation which is used well on some holes, especially # 2 which is a 402' downhill throw where you're throwing between a fairly wide gap in the trees off the tee. I also really liked the finishing hole which is 262' with the basket set down in some trees. There is a dry rocky area just in front of the basket which is OB. Fun little hole.

The course and the park are very clean, litter free, vandalism free and surrounded by a nice housing development.

Cons:

Not much to complain about. The signage is not impressive but it's serviceable.

I wasn't a fan of holes 3 or 5. They're both wide, open slight uphill throws.

Single chain baskets seem to catch well enough.

The course is mostly open therefore the challenge is somewhat lacking.

Other Thoughts:

For a scout project, I was mostly impressed with the course here. For a simple little 9 hole recreational course, it supplies a certain amount of enjoyment and it's length allows most players the opportunity to throw some maximum distance. If I lived close I would have no issues playing here all the time.

Field work: COURSE EDITION 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 24, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

You won't lose discs here.
Freedom to throw whatever shot you want.
Great place to learn to read/throw in different wind conditions.
There is a pool nearby so you can cool off on those hot summer days.
Being an 9 hole course you can play it very quickly.
Weather has minimal impact on the course.

Cons:

It is a course literally placed into an open field, the challenge is that you actually have functioning body parts and know how to throw a disc.
The baskets will spit out damn near anything that isn't a direct pole hit, are these eBay branded or something?
Awful signage, Sharpie onto a wooden post denotes your distance (then again you can see the basket from every hole but hole 1)

Other Thoughts:

This course is pretty..... boring as much as I hate to say it. The course plays 90% into open fields with at most a small obstacle or gap to avoid being your difficulty factor. The wind plays largely into your shots because of this and can yield some really interesting shots. The baskets will be where most of your strokes are lost as the chains don't seem to do anything to catch the disc and you will get spit outs/ spit throws very easily so make sure your putts are dialed dead center not too hard and not too soft. This course does still have its place and purpose and is great for learning to read the wind or have a controlled day of practice drives.

Asphalt added 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 2, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course has big open shots with very little obstructions. They just added asphalt to the tees. They also added a course map on the side of the community center before you walk to hole #1.

Cons:

The grass is getting long and have yet to cut it. They currently have construction going on between holes 6 and 9. Hole 6 is currently missing the basket due to equipment running it over.

Other Thoughts:

Very good course for beginners.

Tee Boxes Added 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 9, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course seems to have gone through a slight design change since it was last reviewed. Crushed stone tee boxes have been added (except #1, & 6 which start on asphalt). Great course for beginners, as it has obstacles that are easier to navigate than other courses. There are trees, but they are technically easier to throw through/around. Also, it would be really hard to lose a disk here since most of the throws are in the open. It is a great place to try out some new disks with out all the hazards of losing them in the underbrush. I love the Mando on #1 which makes you throw through the trees instead of around them.

Cons:

For professionals, it probably would not be much of a challenge, as there might not be enough obstacles to make it interesting (for others, that is a Pro, not a Con)

Other Thoughts:

The layout has changed a bit. Hole #1 starts on the asphalt along side the building (with Mando to the right of the trees). #2 plays from on top of the hill, throwing between a gap in the trees to a nice drop off (I believe this is what used to be hole #3). From there it is easy to navigate since the holes just follow around. #3 moves up the hill, #4 down the hill, and #5 is a 525ft par 4 that comes back across towards the building. #6 plays from the asphalt (right next to where #1 tee is) and throws through the trees and down hill. #7 plays along a tree line (which is a Mando left). #8 is a nice short 255 ft with the basket tucked nicely behind a tree, and #9 plays down hill with the basket tucked inside a ring of 4 or 5 trees with some rocks in front of it (which I played as OB for added difficulty).

I enjoyed the course. It has some deceiving uphill shots that play longer than they appear(#3,5). The course is set back from the rest of the park so you don't have to worry about your discs hitting random people. Also, there is a clear line of site from each tee to basket. Great Job by the Boy Scout who designed it!

Scout Course...Not a Pitch n Putt

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 24, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

A person from a scout troop installed this mostly open course on previously unused land behind the recreation center. The baskets are just what they are. There are 18 tees, but 9 baskets. Course has a few scattered trees on a couple holes, but otherwise the course is open, allowing some grip and rip opportunities. Tee pads on the front nine, good condition.

Cons:

Any pro who can throw 400' plus with good accuracy is going to probably finish seven or eight down, as there is no challenge here for them. The grass is not long, but it is too long to throw a roller and get good distance on it. If you only throw 200-250', you're going to get a lot of long upshots, as the holes are built for longer par threes (not a true con, just something to keep in mind). The obstacles are practically not existent after three. Little bit of a walk to one. No distances are labeled for the back nine (some shorter, some longer). Be careful of the treeline near holes 6 and 7 that you not end up on the other side of it and in someone's backyard.

Other Thoughts:

Again, it is not a destination course, it is not a must play, and is nothing to write home about. However, it is better than a prototypical pitch n putt. The scout(s) who put this course in didn't do a bad job with what they had, and they kept the neighbors in mind when coming up with the layout. For this I say they earned their badges.
