Standard Issue Park Course

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 8, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Concrete Tees
-Baskets OK
-Use of elevation
-Quick play
-Nice map at start

Cons:

-Multi use park with walking trail in play on all holes
-No signage (Appears the old white discs w/info are gone)
-Busy park with walkers
-Not much for trees to work around
-Bench in concrete about 75' off the #9 tee, right in line

Other Thoughts:

Pioneer Park hosts a decent DGC in the middle of Harlan, IA. A multi-use park with a walking trail around a small pond, a playground and a few shelters. While the pond does not come into play, the walking trail does on every hole. It was a busy trail the day I played, so a few pauses were necessary. From the previous pictures, white informational discs in the ground have been replaced by concrete tees. There is no info here, no signage, however most of the info is on the map (distances, layout) with the assumption that all are Par 3. The layout is OK, easy to follow, the path is an annoyance, but probably used far more than the disc golf. Park was well kept. #9 has a bench right in the main throw lane, about 75' out from the tee. Add some signage, move the bench, and you'd probably get a 3.0 from me. My round was OK, I wouldn't travel way out the way for it, but would play again, if in the area.

Beautiful Park, but 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 7, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Absolutely beautiful park... Course winds around the pond located in the middle of the park. Grass cut perfectly... even in November!!
Good distance for beginners, long enough for quick round for seasoned players. Enough obstacles, elevation, and blind shots to make it interesting.

Cons:

Last review written in 2011... looks like that's the last time someone played the course...
Tees are marked with discs in ground- hard to find (couldn't find #2 and #5). Grass not even worn around the markers.
Baskets look like they've been there for 10 years.

Other Thoughts:

Nice that they put disc golf in the park, but looks like they didn't want to "mess up" the park with concrete tee pads or visible markers. Add those elements and the park becomes a 3.5 or 4 in my book.

Disc Golf In Harlan Iowa! Go HCHS! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 26, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a nice small town course located in Iowa perfect for beginners. The course is fairly easy with mostly some basic straight long open shots with a few trees that come into play. The DISCatcher baskets are in great shape and are visible from each tee. The are hole numbers on the baskets to make navigation a little bit easier. There is one white ground insert on each tee box that provides all the hole information. This is a good course for a beginner trying to learn the game. There are restrooms available at this park and plenty of parking. This park is very cleaned and well maintained with a nice lake in the center of the park and covered picnic areas for you to enjoy.

Cons:

If your looking for a good challenge, this is not the course you want to play. There is always other park users and lots of little kids playing around some baskets.Navigation could be an issue here because there is only one white ground insert per hole and the grass has grown over a few of them so it is hard to see them. The markers for all tees are there, you just have to look real good to find them.

Other Thoughts:

I had to play this course because it was in my hometown were I grew up. I'm glad Harlan put a disc golf course in, hopefully it will get more kids out here playing and maybe recognize the sport.

Excellence Incarnate 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 4, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Perhaps one of the most pristine disc golf locations in the region. With scenic vistas and irksome holes this course provides beauty and challenge in one awesome experience. The first hole provides discers with a simple yet challenging warm up. The second hole demands control and power. The course escalates until the end with hole nine leaving the discer battered but wanting more.

Cons:

Some hole are a little milf for the experieced but still provide fun and excitement.

Pros:

This is an easy little course with very few obstacles. I recommend it for beginners, although try to play on a weekday, so to avoid having to wait for other park users.

Cons:

If you're looking for a challenge don't get off the highway to play this course.

Other Thoughts:

First tee is on the south side of the course just below the little covered structure. Scorecards can be found on one of the posts.
