It's... Better than bad.

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 16, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

+There's a wide variety of distance on this course. There are holes that are sub-200' ace runs, 450+ foot bomber holes, and everything in between. The layout isn't bad for the landscape.

+Hole 1 plays as an island hole with the road and parking lot acting as OB.

+Hole 10 is a fun shot off of a slight hill to a basket protected by two guardian trees.

+13 is one of the few wooded holes on this course and requires some major precision to get the birdie.

+The Latitude 64 baskets catch well.

+Good tee signs and course flow. The one spot where it could be confusing has a directional sign.

+Nice benches at most, if not all, holes.

Cons:

-Most of the holes are wide open and boring. There is a lack of trees on the fairways, and experienced players won't find much to challenge them on most holes.

-Safety is an issue here. The course plays through a parking lot, over a road, through a baseball back stop, right by a playground and over a walking trail. They do have warning signs up, but if anybody was using the school grounds, things could get problematic.

-Due to this being on school grounds, this course is only playable when school is out. Either play it on a weekend or afternoon.

Other Thoughts:

=There's not too much else to say about this course. A few fun holes, some wide-open ace runs, and some distance holes. That's pretty much it.

Pros:

Hawk's Nest DGC winds around the grounds of Blue Academy Elementary. Not sure if you're into carrying firearms during rounds but Indiana state law forbids firearms on school property so heads up! The football field by hole 4 provides a nice warm up area.

There is some creativity to be found here. Hole 1 is an Island hole surrounded by parking lot. Hole 5 plays over a stretch of parking lot and the basket is tucked behind a small mound. Hole 2 also makes good use of another small mound in front of the basket and hole 3 is well guarded by some evergreen trees.

The Latitude 64 elite pro baskets are high quality and the grounds were well kept. Hole 8's basket is actually slightly elevated with some neat little landscaping under it. There were a couple of holes over 400 feet so you'll get a chance to let one fly.

Each hole has a "pro" par and an "am" par. I know pars are all relative anyway but in my opinion this sort of gesture helps beginners to gain some confidence and not feel bad for taking more than 2 shots to reach a 520 foot basket.

Cons:

Other than the 5 or 6 unique (and admittedly quite fun) holes this course is basically just 180-250 foot hyzers off the tee. There's some OB here and there to break up the monotony but not enough to really make you sweat it or change discs or angles.

Holes 14, 15 and 16 play adjacent to a fenced in subdivision. This course ain't in the worst part of town but I still wouldn't risk jumping the fence in to someone's backyard here. There's also a non-zero chance of losing a disc in the thickly wooded areas behind some of the baskets.

The layout is mostly intuitive but the transition from 13 to 14 was pretty confusing Even with UDisc it still took me a bit to figure out where I was going. And I'm pretty sure I played 7 and 8 out of order but they're very similar so didn't really matter in the end.

Potential safety issue on hole 6 as it forces you to throw out over a playground area. It probably wouldn't be an issue if you respect the designer's wishes and avoid playing during school hours but still something to be mindful of.

Other Thoughts:

While far from perfect Hawk's Nest certainly serves as a good beginner's course. If I lived closer I could see myself bringing some friends or my kids here from time to time. It would also be great for a putters only round if you're looking to work on your form.
