Local small town practice course

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 6, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is on a nice piece of property that is well maintained. The signs are very nice and contain all of the information you look for in a sign, including a graphic of each hole. There is a nice full course sign hanging on the side of the concession building which might not be apparent to visitors coming from the North parking lot.

Cons:

This course is not in an ideal situation, it appears to have been shoehorned into the park in the first place, recently 3 holes were added in the least utilized portion of the park. Holes 7 & 8 play fairly close to private property and errant throws can find their way on said property. This park has a lot of amenities which create an opportunity for user conflict. The baskets are Axiom Pros, colored Baby Blue. They don't catch great, certainly not like the baskets on most courses now days.

Other Thoughts:

Thankfully this park has been nearly deserted every time I've played which is it's saving grace as far as user conflict. If there were other events going on such as baseball or softball games you will want to keep moving and find another course to play for the day.

Beginner course with some issues

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 16, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Heath Township Park fills a smallish plot of land behind the fire station in Hamilton, MI. The park has recently added nine holes of disc golf to complement the other amenities.

This is a very short course that is most suitable for beginners to get a quick round in. Holes 1-6 are each 125'-200' throws with a couple of trees to work around, and a walking path that plays as OB. Holes 8-9 are mostly open with only a couple of man-made obstacles in play.

There is a nice tee sign for each hole, with all of the required info. The baskets are baby blue Axiom Pro models. These are passable. The park has trash cans, benches, and a restroom building near the playground.

Cons:

Lots of potential multi-use issues here. As mentioned above, there is a walking path in play on many of the first six holes. The park drive is also in play on holes 2 and 3. The worst offender here though is hole 7. This one is squeezed in between the outfield of a baseball diamond, and the park boundary fence. For RHBH throwers, the most realistic plays looked to be a tricky anhyzer shot over the outfield, or a sharp hyzer out over the boundary fence that finishes back into the park. This hole is a bad idea, and clearly just stuck in there to add a 9th hole and get DG'ers from the area that Holes 1-6 are in to the open field that #8-9 are in. Honestly, I would have rather they just left this course as holes 1-6.

On a related note, the layout is pretty convoluted. Holes 1-6 play counterclockwise and form a loop. These holes flow fine, once you find hole 1 near the center of the park (if walking from the north parking lot, you'll probably see hole 2 before hole 1). Holes 7-9 form kind of an offshoot that plays into a different section of the park, and with hole 7's pad near hole 6's pad. So it's one weird walk to find hole 1, then after playing hole 6 you have to walk it back to find the remaining holes. If keeping holes 7-9, it seemed to me that one of these walks could be eliminated by renumbering holes 1-6 so that the current hole 6 is hole 1. Then it would still be a long walk to hole 1 from the parking lot, but the rest of the layout would flow smoothly. There aren't any Next Tee signs here, so I'd recommend pulling up UDisc for navigation.

The holes are very short, and (other than #7) easy. Even recreational players should finish comfortably under par.

The course is flat.

There are no tee pads - just tee off next to the signs.

No kiosk or practice basket.

Other Thoughts:

When the park is mostly deserted, this is an OK place for beginners to practice. But I wasn't impressed with this one. Even for locals, I'd recommend heading a mile up the road to Hamilton Middle School rather than playing here.
