Easy breezy 2+ years

Pros:

Heymann Park is pretty tucked away in Lafayatte if you're driving by on i10. You have to want to get there to find the course. The directions on the course home page are very good though, and I had no problem finding the first tee, even though I didn't know where to park.

The park itself is on some gentle elevation, with long slopes, no real hills, but more of inclines. The trees are ancient oak trees- some of the best trees to play a round of golf through.

I really enjoyed the layout of each holes, bringing in a small pond on the course, making good use of the scattered trees, and woodsy areas. There are two holes in particular by the pond that stand out, a couple long field shots under the branches of the mighty oaks I enjoyed, and even a good hole around a baseball field, which I normally don't care for (though we all have to admit the curve of an outfield makes a good fairway, it would be nice to have a park that has a baseball field NOT have that hole).

DiscCatcher targets and concrete tees are both nice, but are a little worn. But they still get the job done, and have many years left in them.

Hole 10 is probably the most engaging hole, with an easy birdie line over some water I'm sure is shallow but is so dark you will never see your disc.

There's another longer hole where the target runs close to the river, but you can't tell from the tee. That's kind of a con, but the hole is one of the more interesting ones.

Cons:

The smelly dumpster is not just a nit-picky thing. It's pretty bad and there's no way to avoid it.

A lot of the holes are pretty open, especially towards the end. There's a minimal amount of shot shaping, and more pure distance. If you like that then this will probably feel like 3.5 course to you. It would be for me too if the whole course were like the first 8 out of 10 holes. Towards the end of your round you don't really feel like playing it again because of that.

Other Thoughts:

Heymann Park probably gets a lot of bad press from some of the other activities going on in the park. But judging by the smell of those activities wafting over to us while we played, I don't think most disc golfers mind, and several would join in.

I wouldn't mind playing this park again if I'm in town. I was just there for a tournament at Magnolia Park the next day, but I may like this park a little more. The hole designs are a bit better, the tees nicer, and the baskets are reliable. Heymann Park is unique in many regards, but will not feel like a course you haven't played anywhere else.

Not Amazing but Definitely Exceeded Expectations 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 6, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Years before coming to play Heymann Park, I had heard and read a lot of negative opinions on the course. The negative opinions ranged from being a fairly vandalized course, to having tricky navigation to being too wide open. I may have caught the course on a good day, but I did not seem to find those to be glaring issues.

Heymann Park really exceeded my expectations. I felt it had a fair share of distance combined with obstacles that were strategically placed to make it an all around solid, not great, but solid course.

Most tee signs were there and more than half of the holes had concrete tee pads while the others had gravel. All of the baskets seemed to be in good condition as well.

Water came into play in a few places with the small swamp in the middle and the river that came into play on a couple other holes. You really should not expect to lose a disc in the water, but there is a fair amount of risk/reward on the holes that do have water in play. Hole 10 immediately comes to mind as it is a 150' shot over a narrow opening over the water. If you make that shot, you almost have a guaranteed 2, or you can throw a hyzer away from the water but look for a longer putt at a 2.

There are only a few holes that I felt were too long and too open. Most holes had a few big oak trees littering the fairways. If you play OB rules with path and beyond, there is a fair amount of challenge to shoot real well here.

Cons:

For whatever reason, as the course went on, I liked it less and less. After the first 9 holes, I could have seen myself rating this course a 4.0, but as it wore on, the holes became less and less interesting, which dropped my rating to what it is now. There is something to the course being "too open" but I do not believe that it is a major con but something worth noting.

It is worth noting the dumpster that smells like no other on Hole 3.

There is a lot action from non disc golfers around the park, so watch for htem. Some fairways play fairly close to the park roads, so watch out for cars before throwing.

Other Thoughts:

Lafayette is a solid disc golf city. It has four 18 courses courses that are all decent in their own way. It has been about 5 years since I played the other 3 but Heymann Park definitely compares well to the others. Again, my expectations were exceeded here, and I would happily play this course again.

Something different for Lafayette 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 3, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Heymann gives a different sort of challenge to the other area courses with plenty of aesthetics on the course. Located adjacent to the Vermillion River and among numerous hundreds of year old Live Oaks, the course epitomizes southern Louisiana. The front nine provides a more stern test of placement shots with out of bounds creeping into every hole in the form of picnic area pavilions, a pond, a baseball field, roads, several walking trails, and the river. Though plenty of danger is abound most all of these holes can be reached with a well executed drive. The back nine starts off with devilishly short ace run over the pond with a big chance of getting wet if not careful then wanders out to a chance for a few birdies in a row in and around several Live Oaks. The last four holes provide a demanding challenge of placement shots or a lot of luck in getting your three's. The Spanish Moss acts like cedar trees and keeps you honest from throwing wayward shots and getting away with it. The baskets are brand spanking new Innova Discatchers and each tee is marked with distances and a picture of the hole from the course map. The flow of the course is easy to follow with each hole for the most part being easy to spot from the previous basket. The tee pads are natural now but have held up well in the couple months the course has been in.

Cons:

The course sees a lot of foot traffic and a lot of picnickers that have essentially no idea what disc golf is or that they are in the middle of the fairway most of the time. On any given day some holes (1, 2, 3, 9, 11, 18) may not be playable due to picnickers, bouncy castles, fishermen/women, and little kids running amok. This is seemingly a bigger issue on the weekends or any day with nice weather. Don't be surprised if kids run by and pick up your discs either and try to run off with it. Though a temporary con until the course gets more established and more amenities put in, the visuals on the tee signs can be confusing to some. The pictures are straight off the course map but without any re-orientation to show what you'd see off the tee. An example is hole 1's tee with the sign map being completely upside down from what you see off the tee. This is typical throughout the entire course. While it may not be the most obvious shot or best one for the given fairway, this course has 18 hyzers on it for RHBH. The forced shot selection is very low. There are rollers and anhyzers out there but none are forced as the fairways can still be thrown with a straight-to-hyzer line. This takes the course down a notch from being a true championship course for me.

Other Thoughts:

Overall Heymann gives a lot of fun shots and a lot of spots that can leave you wondering what could have been. The pond/river can swallow your discs without skipping a beat if you're not careful and birdies can slip through your fingers. The aesthetics on the back nine are some of the best I've seen in the state and 16-18 are among the best finishing trio's in LA as well. I only really consider holes 9 and 16 to be par fours for a par 56 overall and would rate this course for an advanced and up to shot par and below. The course provides less skilled players a different style course than nearby Pa Davis but much more difficult. More skilled players will do well to go whole rounds without OB and to maximize shot placement for birdie opportunities.

Heyman Park Review 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 19, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Every hole has a different obstacle that is unique to the course

Cons:

In the weekends it can be very crowded due to park dwellers. Go in the weekday for the best experience!!

Other Thoughts:

If you are looking for a change up in the lafayette area, Heymann is your place. It's kind of a mix between acadiana, paul breax, and girard. Great course!!!
