Substantial work has gone into the forested area previously occupied by the first six holes of the old course, resulting in vast improvement in the first few holes leading up the hill. The holes in this area have been opened up and are significantly greener, with lots of slight uphill drives with multiple paths around huge trees, boosting the fun factor.

There are also some holes in new areas (Holes 7 through 9) including tunnel holes and steep downhill shots. The mid-section of the course (Holes 10 through 14) includes most of the features of some of the best of the original course holes at the open areas near the ski lift, including a downhill bomb on Hole 11 (this was the old Hole 9). The course deviates from the original course at Hole 15, with a perilous hole over a ravine in a dune. Thankfully, one of the short, cheap holes from the old course (Hole 13) was eliminated, though this also eliminated the old Hole 14. Hole 16 is from Hole 15 of the old course, with a thrilling, downhill wooded tunnel drive. The new white Innova baskets are nice, as are the signs and teepads. Some newly added laminated paper signs pointing to the next tee are helpful, but may not survive long. A free course with plenty of parking in a newly paved and enlarged lot.

There are some navigation hiccups here and there, with some issues between Holes 8 and 9 and Holes 16 and 17. The long walk between Holes 16 and 17 is a major flaw, crossing the fairway for Hole 11, and impossible to navigate without the uDisc app. None of the holes measure up in terms of distance to the longest holes at championship courses. Though Hole 15 is an improvement over the old Hole 13, the walk up and down the ravine slopes could be dangerous if wet. This is a seasonal course, with locally lousy weather even for Michigan with many cold and cloudy days.

As with the previous course, the steep slopes are a serious workout. This isn't regarded a pro or con, but it is something to be ready for. The epic, top-of-the-world holes from the old course are NOT a part of this course, but apparently are a part of the as yet unfinished North course. In general, I applaud the effort to make two 18 hole courses out of the old 24 hole course. Thanks also go to a large number of sponsors credited on a billboard found on the course. Not in the top rank, but solidly in the top quartile of courses.
