Gangland no more. drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 27, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

There was once a sprawling disc golf utopia at the heart of Holly Hill. A place where transients and purveyors of the street life played and sewage runoff lay stagnant. A place where top athletes gathered for the love of sport and competition. A place where people sent their children to a windowless building for a what I assume to be education. (Its still there) One day the bass became silent and the lowered vehicles of yesteryear moved on. Enter the pickleballers.

Cons:

It has been told that the clash of the two factions fought a battle of epic proportions but when the smoke cleared the Pickleballers had paddled the last 84 Caprice classic right out of town.

Other Thoughts:

It is now a site of former glory and a reminder of man's inhumanity towards man. The disc golfers and local transients tried in vain to push the forces back but the Ballers were too strong. The rightful owners of this land have been relegated to a small pond and what was once the final 5 holes. A place that exists in our hearts and memories of days past.

Hope you Brought a Putter 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 1, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice, fairly new baskets and serviceable tees at a small park in close proximity to the beach. Not a bad place to work with you putter and if I did go back, that's probably all that I'd bring. The majority of the holes are close to a small pond with jumping fish so the atmosphere isn't too bad either.

Hole 9 is nicely laid out, cutting across a corner of the lake to a basket that sits on a bluff sticking out over the lake. It's not a bad way to end the course and is somewhat redeeming.

Cons:

But, it's nine holes that range from short to very short in a park that really didn't have the space for nine holes. There are no signs, a fact which is somewhat mitigated by the fact that you can almost always see the basket from the tee.

The first two holes are adjacent to the ball fields and suffer for that greatly. Though both are short they both manage to cross the road. From there three is in a different park. If I hadn't read here that you have to cross the railroad tracks, I would not have found the rest of the holes.

When I did found three, I didn't bother playing it. The line you need to throw crosses a few parking spaces, spaces which were occupied when I was there. The rest of the holes aren't much better, either in layout or navigation.

Hollyland Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 22, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a short little 9 hole recreational course. You'll find concrete tee pads and nice Discatcher baskets. Small 4x4 posts with tee numbers lead the way and it's pretty easy to follow the course once you figure out the transition from holes one and two to hole three on the other side of the railroad tracks.

Being short has its advantages too. If you're looking for a place to introduce players or teach kids this would be a pretty good place. The course plays quickly too if you're short on time. The birdie runs are fun and the course gives generous ace opportunities too.

It looks like there's enough room to come up with some safari holes to mix things up if you are a local who's weary of the layout or in town and not able to get to any other parks and want to mix things a bit.

Cons:

Having to begin in one park for the first two holes and then transition to another park for the next seven is not a terrible thing in and of itself, after all it's not that far of a walk. The issue is that the first two holes are really nothing special and it's almost not worth the trouble.

Others have mentioned that the pond has generous areas to retrieve errant shots or bad rolls. That might be true but the three signs around the pond that say, "Alligators have been seen in the lake" would be a deterrent for me to go in for a disc. To add insult to injury, the water was nasty looking. The banks from around the ninth basket stretching to the parking lot were full of trash and debris. I wouldn't suggest contacting that water for risk of some waterborne illness.

The park had an overall dirty feel to it and I just never felt like I could relax and enjoy the round. There are lots of distractions including the train that came through during the round. Of course it's blowing its horn like crazy because it's about to go through a road crossing.

Hole nine's pad has a retaining wall on the back and side and might limit those who have a big run up. There are some tee markers buried right beside some pads that could interfere with a run up and create a trip hazard too.

Other Thoughts:

If you are visiting Daytona and have the time, it might be worth the trip to play while you're in town. If you strapped for time you really should try to hit the other two courses in Daytona because this really is the last resort. With that being said, if you know what to expect you can still have a good time. Enjoy!

Don't go out of your way for this one 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 11, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

New discatchers. Good cement tees.

The course is in an attractive setting adjacent to a small lake. The hole difficulties are appropriate for a beginner course and the course will likely attract some new players to the game. The holes that are near the water have a good deal of "bail-out" area so that beginners aren't forced to lose their plastic.

Holes 3-9 provide a good challenge for new players and a bit of technical practice for more experienced players.

Cons:

Routing issues:
The course starts near the baseball fields in one park and after two holes players must walk down to the main road, over the railroad tracks and over to an adjacent park.

Holes 6-7-8 are a dead end loop. Following hole 8, players must walk back against the grain of hole 5 to hole 9's tee. Hole 9 ends in the middle of the second park. Following hole 9, players must backtrack past hole 4-3-2 to get back to the starting point.

I'd recommend parking near hole 3 and skipping hole 1 and 2 altogether.

Safety issues:
Hole 1 crosses a park road.
Hole 2 plays entirely down a park road with the basket just off the road.
Hole 3 has a park dirt road down the left and a picnic area behind the basket. Hole 4 has a park dirt road down the left and a parking area behind the basket.

The tee signs are placed such that they touch the back or sides of the tee pads and are a trip hazard in some instances.

Hole 9's tee pad is in play on hole 5.

Just plain weird: There are some random cement tee pads scattered around the course in weird places.

Evidently they are the remnants of an aborted course design.

Other Thoughts:

The word is that originally the designer had some insanely unsafe 18 hole layout that used the two parks mentioned plus some additional, adjacent land on the water treatment property. Fortunately, Innova East responded to the problem by sending down a designer to salvage the project. This individual did the best they could given the park constraints. In my honest opinion, however, this is another example of a course that probably shouldn't have gone in the ground.

Remember: Don't be a dirty disc golfer. If you pack it in, pack it out!
