Pros:

In a day full of driving and disc golfing my way down the Kenai Peninsula, my final stop was Jack Gist DGC. As far as 9 hole courses go this one is pretty solid. It's got a little woods, and a little elevation. The tees are paved and the baskets are nice. Laminated tee signs marking every tee. There are two tees per hole to double up for 18 if you need a little extra. Course map in parking lot.

The first two holes are heavily covered with trees. One is downhill a bit, and two turns back up the hill. They are not too long, so a shot through the gap will likely get you somewhere close to the baskets. If you miss it could become a bit of a pinball experience. Hole one is planted on a stump, and the ground drops off behind the pin a bit, so overshooting it or taking a bad roll can happen.

Hole three is a bit of a downhill bomber, with tees next to the outfield fence of the ball field and the basket at the bottom of a good sized hill. The fairway is open in the middle, but a stand of trees blocks the left side of the fairway.

Four and five are across the bottom end of the hill. Four has a few trees behind the basket, but it's mostly clear up to that point. Five is pretty level but has a few trees that cut up the approach into a windows.

Six throws toward the hillside out of a handful of trees. The basket is half way to the top, and the hill makes a backstop unless you throw way high and far. There is a large bush on the left and a tree on the right. My drive was pin high but to the left, and the grass was thick enough to keep it stuck very close to the landing spot. Seven is on an uphill slope that is wide open. Keep it in the middle and it shouldn't be any trouble. Tall grass to either side can hide an errant drive.

Eight is the longest hole, with a bit of danger to the right side. Its downhill and open most of the way to the pin. Right of the pin is a hillside that has thick trees and tall brush. A few trees to the left of the pin can also make a putt more difficult if you miss to that side. Nine is over gently rolling, grassy terrain with a line of dense trees on the right side.

Cons:

Two tees per hole, but the offset isn't enough to create drastically different looks. A little extra distance on the blue tees and slightly different angle from the golds. I liked the easy to follow layout, and the terrain is varied and has contour, but the difficulty isn't exactly expert level.

I didn't get the awesome view of the glacier pictured and posted by Discette earlier that month. Smoke from wild fires hazed over the horizon.

Other Thoughts:

A nice finish to a great trip. Jack Gist is good for a nine hole course. It has holes with personality, and is well equipped. If you're in the vicinity of Homer it is worth a visit, provided you have already got in a round or three at the Moose Pretzel.

I was bogey free, with a birdie on hole seven. Being under par is always nice, but I wish I could have made a couple of more putts. Definitely could have been a better score.

Pros:

Close to town
Easy to Navigate
Alternate T's for 18.
Good Markage
Good Map at beginning
Great group of locals offering League play and frequent tourneys! (Thanks Edan!)
(NEW)
Newly installed boardwalks though muddy areas.
Recent clearing of brush

Cons:

Not always maintained.
Frequent Moose Hazards.

Other Thoughts:

First time I played here was with some friends and we only had an "ultimate Disc" to share between us, so it was hard to get a feel for the layout.
Second time, I was able to bring my quiver and give it a proper go. The shot and terrain variety was just right. A pretty short course, but definitely not a pitch and putt. Really nice to have a public course in Homer. Good flow and easy to get a round of 9 in about a 1/2 hour. As this is my new "home course", I am kind'a partial to it.
