The Latest Gem in Long, Wooded PEI Courses

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 30, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

PEI's cup runneth over with the number of excellent wooded courses that have popped up over the last few years, and King's Pine is no exception.

- 18 newer baskets in excellent shape

- Turf tee pads that may not be as good as concrete, and a touch smaller than hoped for in a couple of spots, but overall very solid.

- Two sets of tee pads, which offer a substantial enough distance gap that it toughens up the course nicely and gives you a real reason to play one vs the other.

- Nice mix of Par 3s, 4s, and 5s with a variety of shot shapes and hole layouts.

- Lots of fun ace runs from the shorts (Reds) ranging from 200 feet to 300 feet.

- Not sure about signage, it was forced to change due to the hurricane but was top notch, we relied on UDisc which was spot on.

- Good mix of open and technical shots. Much more open than Glenaladale, which is a similar course in many respects.

- Considering how new the course is, very walkable. One of the best forest courses we've come across in terms of ground litter and stubby roots and stumps for how new it is, not to mention recovering from Hurricane Fiona. Probably the best longer wooded course on the island for strollers/pull carts.

- Some neat features to the course (long boardwalk for one stretch) and unique holes.

Cons:

- Some very nasty spots to lose discs due to blowdown and piles of cleared brush that aren't too far off the fairways.

- Course is still a bit raw, but not nearly as much as you'd think for its age and we've seen it being worked on almost every time we've played it.

- Sort of out in the middle of nowhere (which is actually a pro if you like country drives). Not too far a drive from Charlottetown, but the opposite direction of all the other courses.

- Not a ton of elevation overall, but they've made good use of the elevation they do have. Let's be honest, I'm basically looking for cons to add at this point.

Other Thoughts:

- This is the course we've ended up playing the most on the island this past summer, which kind of surprised us because the first time we played the course we liked it a lot, but weren't necessarily blown away by it. It doesn't have a ton of wow factor, but is extremely enjoyable from a replay perspective. This is partly because the Reds can be played very quickly, you can score well, and there are lots of ace runs. Lost discs are minimized playing from the Reds as well, though there are some nasty spots if you're off the fairway. The other wooded courses on the island don't offer this, as they tend to be longer and more challenging with more blind full tee shots (e.g. Glenaladale, Rose Valley, Huck It). The Reds here are maybe 25% easier than the Reds at Hillcrest to throw out a random thumb-in-the-air figure.

- The owners of this course have been putting in an enormous amount of work and it really shows.

- Pay to play, signage said $5/person as of August 2023.

- Disc rentals in the little shed by the parking lot.

- Bring bug spray in summer.

- Can't say enough how lucky Islanders are to have 5 extremely good 18-hole courses within 30-40 minutes of Charlottetown (Huck It, Rose Valley, Hillcrest, Glenaladale, and now King's Pine), plus the Forest Hills golf course too. I'm not saying I'd rank this course above Hillcrest, Hillcrest is #1 in Canada and one of the top courses in the world for a reason, but there are days when we feel we'd rather do the drive out and play this one.
