Open and Frustrating Potential 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 3, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course has LENGTH (nearly 8,000 ft per UDisc). It is pretty forgiving for the most part as you have few obstructions to errant throws, but it is a workout nonetheless. Several par 4's are listed, though a couple probably shouldn't be with the current course layout. The biggest variable to playing well on this course is the wind. A calm day and this course is pretty pedestrian open-field disc golf. When it remembers it's Oklahoma, it becomes a study in aerodynamics and frustration as you will have headwind, tailwind, and all manner of crosswind shots required throughout the course.

Where mature trees are available, they are utilized well. The available elevation is employed well throughout the course too. That's probably the best-used design aspect of the course if I'm being honest. Maybe one pin is what I'd call protected as most greens are open. The OB areas can up the difficulty when all non-mowed fairways are treated as such. One small creek/bog area is in play on a couple of holes, but it's more nasty than a disc thief.

I've observed on-going maintenance and upkeep that put lots of other courses to shame. It's a labor of love for the course maintainers and they've done a great job so far. That's worth half a disc in my review.

Cons:

It is just wide open on most holes and can get frustrating for younger or less skilled players. There are a couple of mando's that attempt to force lines (including one 'invisible' mando around a future tree planting) but overall, there is a lot of rip/grip/repeat aspects to a round. The back nine has a few short holes with less wind aspects and more technical approaches, but there is not much variety on the overall course.

The flow is just OK. The first dozen holes make sense for the most part but it gets odd around 12, 13, and 14. I've seen people playing to the wrong pin a lot, which is odd for such an open course.

The tee pads are natural as of this writing. They started out as mulch-filled boxes but are now just dirt (which is better IMO). I don't see an issue with that, but others might. Signage is temporary #'s and pars on fence posts next to the tees. Concrete tees and better signage would add half a disc to my rating. Other amenities such as benches and more garbage cans would be welcome as well.

Other Thoughts:

The original intent of this course was to replace the Little River Course that was destroyed by the tornado in 2013. This course was professionally designed (I believe), though the land available did not have the requisite trees to realize the envisioned course. Efforts at fundraising for the many mature plantings needed had stalled and members of the church elected to install what they could in two, 9-hole phases. The 18-hole layout has been in for a bit now and you can imagine what the course could be, but we're talking thousands of dollars in mature plantings to get there. Lots of potential for a course that was envisioned as a championship level addition to Oklahoma and a replacement for a well-liked course with similar championship aspirations.

This is the closest course to my house and I play it once a month or so if I can. I'm not a bomber so my skillset isn't a great fit for this course. That said, there are some fun holes to play here. I like the first two holes for the uphill/downhill flavors and a tight line on 4 is one of the few technical throws on the course. Throwing down the long slope on 11 is fun and of course the ace runs on 13 and 15 are always a good time. This is a course to practice your drives and your wind golf. It doesn't separate itself from Woodson or other wide-open courses in any way except that it's relatively new and extremely well-maintained.

Fun and challenging 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 8, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Found the course to be challenging even though there were very few trees. Those that are on the course are strategically utilized to challenge your ability to throw around them. There are quite a few out of bounds and mandos to make it more difficult. Holes are fairly long and wide open for an opportunity to test your driver.

Cons:

Front 9 aren't currently marked. I believe this is something that they are currently raising money to fix, but in the meantime you can find the course map on their Facebook page.
