"LAWRENCE!!!"

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 16, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

I suppose that Ratchet and Clank reference will probably not hit for 99.9% of readers here. Anyway, the town of Lawrence and its high school are located on the I-94 corridor between Benton Harbor and Kalamazoo, MI. The school has recently installed nine holes of disc golf in the back of the school property. The first hole plays through an open area next to, but far enough away from, a baseball diamond. The other holes play through a tightly wooded area behind that baseball diamond.

This has the potential to be a fun short course for students and recreational players. There are 2-3 different holes that play downhill in the woods with a creek in play near the basket at the bottom of the hill. Other holes also take advantage of the rolling, tightly wooded terrain. It looked like the course designers attempted to create a nice variety of different throws. You'll need basic shot shaping to match or better my -3 round here.

The baskets are Chainstars in fine shape. They were hard to see in the dimly lit woods when I visited 30 minutes before sunset on a cloudy day, but that's about 75% my problem.

Cons:

This course was apparently installed in 2022, but it already feels abandoned in 2023. The level of maintenance in the wooded area is clearly zero. Downed trees have fallen across fairways. The only way to distinguish between fairway and rough (or navigate the course in general) is by looking at the UDisc map and trying to match it up with the wild woodland in front of you. The rough isn't thick, so the course is definitely playable. But the fun throws here are kind of lost in the overgrown state of the place.

The tee pads are natural, and I think some are very uneven. The reason I say "I think" is because I am not sure I found the correct location for all of them. They are marked only by tiny orange flags (no kick plates or tee signs), and I only saw about half of the flags. For the rest of the tees I guessed based on the UDisc map.

Even if I was a few feet off in my judgement of tee locations, this course is short and pretty easy. 7 of the 9 holes are accurately listed at <200', with the other two still under 250'. The main challenge is just dealing with the overgrown woods.

You can forget about other course amenities (trash cans/benches/kiosk/practice basket). I did not see a porta potty either.

The course doesn't have any multi-use issues, but the uneven footing in some spots in the woods is definitely a bit of a trip hazard.

The course is a long walk away from the parking lot. Park in the lot off of 6th St (enter on the east side of the school). Then to find the first tee, walk towards the running track and around to the back side of it. The first tee is near the far side of the small utility building between the track and the baseball diamond (at approximate location of Google Maps pin here). It's about a 1/4 mile walk from the parking lot, with a similar walk back at the end of the round.

Other Thoughts:

In my notes for this course I wrote "Short holes with fun elevation changes and water hazards - if you can find the course." That about sums it up. Lawrence could be one of the better entries in what I call the "Kalamazoo Area School 9 Hole Disc Golf Courses 101 catalog" (the eight 9-hole school courses within about a 30 minute drive of Kalamazoo), but it needs a lot more TLC to get there.

As is, I'm feeling pretty generous with my 1.0 rating. This one isn't worth stopping for - unless you are a course bagger with a sense of adventure, a little bit more daylight than I had, and some sturdy footwear!
