Disc Golf in High School Colors 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 6, 2021 Played the course:once

Other Thoughts:

Another short campus course courtesy of the Central Jersey Disc Golf Club. School colors: short red tee posts next to framed paver tees, red DisCatchers.

The flow of the nine is pretty intuitive, though the first tee is a bit hard to spot: look uphill and to the right behind the fence and the school building as you enter from the parking lot. The hole plays across the paved walking path, to the basket on the left. A downhill 200' opener.

The layout plays in a circle around open athletic fields, and it's perfect for gym classes: quick to play, with all players visible for coaching/instruction.

A few artificial barriers that reflect the compromises required when squeezing in a course around existing athletic facilities. There's a low cyclone fence crossing 30'- 40' in front of the first tee, high fencing around a baseball field that affect #6 and #7, and a low backstop that could stop a hyzer on the 8th hole.

Hole #5 is a 200' downhill with the most dramatic elevation change, and the basket tucked against the woodline on the left. A great hole to learn angle and speed control while making ace runs and easy birdies.

Several holes give players the chance to "air it out" and really watch the flight of their discs. Hole #4 is almost 300' with a basket placed up on a terrace holding the tennis courts. Holes #8 and #9 are closer to 200' and flat. Watching discs fly on these three holes might be enough to hook new players and keep them coming back.

5th District High School Course

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 23, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Brand new 9 hole course installed on the expansive property of Manalapan High School. Attractive red DISCatcher baskets which match school colors are featured here, along with painted red tee sign posts and 3'x8' paver block pads, more than sufficient given the modest length of the course. Navigation is pretty intuitive. Holes 1, 3, 4 and 5 all incorporate a bit of elevation; hole 1 begins with a tee shot between trees; hole 3 is a short little throw with a downhill fade-left risk; hole 4 basket finishes up on a hill and hole 5 begins with a drive off an elevated perch adjacent to tennis courts to a basket down below. Though temp. signs are currently tacked to each post, permanent signs will be in place within the next few weeks.

Cons:

Shorter distances will not appeal to the advanced player for competitive play. The hole 4 tee angle is slightly off. There are areas of saturation after heavy rains. As with all of these courses, Manalapan weaves in and around existing athletic fields, limiting playing hours and opportunities.

Other Thoughts:

The mission continues for The Jersey Shore Disc Golf Club in bringing the sport to area high school Phys. Ed. programs, and Manalapan represents its latest effort. It is another modest venue appropriate for high school students and others learning the game. The straightforward layout is favorable to both righties and lefties and allows for excellent supervision of classes on all holes. Reasonable OB- fences, a baseball dugout, tennis courts- all keep players honest without being overly punitive. Manalapan is another excellent Phys. Ed. program option and another step towards the establishment of a district-wide disc golf club sport!
