Fun Rec Course with Some Bite

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 14, 2022 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Course flows beside a gentle creek in nice, neighborhood park.
+ thoughtful design utilizes terrain well
+ creek acts as intimidating obstacle on majority of holes
+ plays quickly to fit in a short round of golf

Cons:

A few holes play close to other park activities or nearby road.
- too few opportunities for long drives
- some fairways overlap other park amenities
- the first two holes play very close to roadway on right
- lack of tee signs (concrete tees are numbered, though)
- difficult creek crossings (large logs serve as bridges in a couple spots)

Other Thoughts:

INFO
McKissic Springs disc golf course plays alongside a shallow creek that forms the defining feature of a narrow strip of tree filled parkland downhill from Lake Centerton. Neighborhood homes flank the park to the west with the course layout steering throws away from that boundary. The course shares park space with a water splash pad, playground, walking trail, picnic areas and restrooms.

EVAL
This is a fun rec course with some bite to it. Almost all the greens are reachable off the tee with a midrange or a fairway driver at best. Most shots border the creek to test drives, approaches and even some putts. This course is beginner friendly in length but fairly challenging due to cozy creek OB and plentiful trees. A few holes lay too close to the adjoining roadway or walking paths which may cause issues for throws which go astray. The layout favors righty backhand hyzer throws, especially with the creek flowing to the right of most fairways. This course entices players with good shot-shaping throws to make and obstacles to avoid; though, for beginners it may be quite a challenge to stay clear of the creek. My favorite hole is #2 which presents a risky throw to the corner of the park where the creek tightly rings the green and road OB closely borders the entire length of the hole.

NOTE
Hole #1 throws downhill past #9's basket situated to the left of the fairway by the playground which is easily mistaken from the tee as the intended target.

LAYOUT
The course begins on a gentle, downhill slope with a righty hyzer hole and continues towards the creek to hole #2 featuring a small, peninsula green encircled by the creek. The remainder of the course plays close beside the creek, first upstream on holes #3-5 and then downstream on holes #6-8. Final hole #9 throws across the creek and back uphill towards a children's playscape.
