Almost two Safari Aces! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 25, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

(1.152 Rating) A park style niner wrapping around a school campus.
- CHAINS - This must be a well-funded school as the baskets are top of the line DISCatchers.
- SORT-OF BEGINNER FRIENDLY - After the chains, I have to start reaching to find nice things to comment on. Although this course is probably too long for beginners, it's forgiving enough that newer players won't be overwhelmed. There are no tee call outs on this layout. So I think most would play from the parking area for an open field shot. (6) and (7) are also open field shots. Holes (3), (8) and (9) are lightly wooded. The tee shots on (2), (4) and (5) have heavy overgrowth on the left, but there's ample bail out to the right. So overall somewhat decent for newer players and they likely won't hate their experience. That said, there are some significant cons that could hinder the odds that a younger player gets hooked
- QUICK PLAY - Despite the poor navigational conditions I encountered, I finished the round in 35 minutes.
- MAINTENANCE - The grass was mowed.

Cons:

Needs some work..
- TEES - I did not find any indication of tees or tee markings.
- LAYOUT FLOW - Needless to say, without tee markings, getting around this course is pretty bad. Other than the baskets, nothing is marked. So how does one determine where to start, when there's no first tee? I started inside twenty feet of basket (1) and scored myself my first North Carolina ace... just kidding, I hit the chastity belt. After (1), I followed the logical basket to basket concept. This process goes uninterrupted until after (7) as there is no next basket to be found. Head east around the building and then south to find basket (8). From looking at Google maps afterwards, it would not be wise to play basket to basket on this one as the best line plays over a large playground. I played that one inside twenty feet too... and concluded that I need to work on my putts if I want to score more safari aces.
- LACK OF CHALLENGE - It felt like recreational challenges going basket to basket. A couple baskets are well guarded and two shots require 400 foot plus power. Overall, bad shots are not overly punished and shot shaping is limited.
- CHARACTER - Baskets can be found, but nothing else.
- UNIQUENESS - There is nothing here I haven't seen 50 times before. All park style shots when going basket to basket.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - Meh. I scored the course a 1.875 out of 5 overall. No glaring eyesores but too open for my preference.

Other Thoughts:

Meadowbrook Elementary will likely be the first disc golf experience for many students. It will work to teach the game to younger kids, but likely lacks the draw provided by Pokemon or Minecraft or whatever game young kids are playing these days. On weekends and afternoons these grounds should be able to provide a nice practice environment for neighborhood players, but I doubt they are calling their friends to have them join in. No need to check this course out for those beyond a five minute drive unless they are making a "Do not recommend list."
