Wish this was in my back yard.... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 7, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Design:
Looking at othe peoples comments and talking to people about Mt. Airy, I knew it was going to be a descent course, but was it worth the 10 hour drive? We had driven 10 hrs from Mpls/St Paul the day before to tackle some of the Cinci area courses. To our delight, this course did not disappoint. This was a well thought out layout and great use of elevation and open/woods combinations.

Fairways: were in good shape and well maintained, no down sticks/trees and grass was a good length.

Rough: at Mt Airy has got a touch of everything imaginable. Many holes have dense woods risk, drop off risks and thick prickly patches of hell. Not knowing the course almost guarantees sacrificing a disc or two but most holes give you a good chance to find your disc.

Elevation Variety: was phenomenal. Many slight uphill shots that turn 270 foot holes into what seems more like 350. Nice mix of gradual downhill right and left hooking holes with larger fairways. Shooting over a gully back to head height is in the mix of holes here. There is really a touch of all styles of elevation layouts requiring your shot selection to be diverse and consistent.

Length: was average, great use of park land. This is a course one could play every day if they lived close. A much more managable course when compared to close by "IDLEWILD", the behemoth.

Use of Water: Not a whole lot here, however the pin placements, elevation and environment more than make up for it.

Course Beauty: is fantastic. Set among rolling hills outside of Cincinatti. The course meanders through a mature forest on the grouds of a well maintained public park. Little trash and simply beautiful.

Overall: Phenomenal design and a very "playable" coures. One that doesnt wear you out but demands consistency and focus.

Signs: Fairly well maintained and marked. Basic sketches. Lengths do not match the scorecards in all cases. Pars seemed to be a bit "novice" on some holes. We typically play any course all 3's to keep it simple. Playing the course this way definitely makes it a challenge to play a par game! I shot a 65 (5 over) my first round here and was pretty satisfied!

Tees: concrete and in good shape.

Ease of Navigation: pretty straightforward, especially if you have the map. If not, find a local. The two added holes (A and B) midcourse are a bit difficult to find your first time through. Look for a small path into the woods to the right after hold 3.

Lost Disc Potential: Moderate

Other: Free Course! Cool sign at the parking lot that shows distances to other phenomenal courses.

Cons:

Not much to complain about here...

No water holes is about it.

Other Thoughts:

Special Features / Misc:
The Pro Shop here is amazing. More disc selection than I have seen in 90% of the shops I have been in.

There is also a practice basket, a midrange basket and a tee off net. On the concrete are stenciled footings to show beginers the proper pre-throw steps. Very Cool!

Fun Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 9, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Wow.

To start there is a great pro shop. There is also a terrific warm up area to throw drives into the net and putt to two different turf greens so they don't get muddy. The sign with mileages to famous disc golf courses adds a nice touch. There are many cool little features like this.

Great concrete tee pads with decent signage.

Every hole is unique here, I never got bored with the holes. There are many par 4s and one great par 5 with a skinny fairway bending right.

Hole 15 is an amazing downhill bomb to a large flat plateaued green. It is a great looking and playing hole.

Lots of opportunities to huk a drive.

Cons:

Hole 3 is kind of a goofy angle. Par 3.5=not very fun. The tees on the two extra holes after hole 3 are not good. 8 is a weak hole playing very short downhill and open. Some of the par 4s are too easy to three.

This course is not too technical.

What a fantastic course this is. The pro shop is one of the best I have seen. It is staffed by some very friendly people. It's a great course for some shot making.

The course is well designed with views, variety and plenty of challenge without being too tight and punitive. The course has a great vibe and feel privileged to have played. I wish I live closer to this jewel.

Cons:

None that I can think of.

The Home of the Nati Big 3 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 23, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Though Idlewild is the crown jewel, Mt.Airy Park is the home of the Cincinnati Big 3. Come to the end of the drive and visit the Nati pro shop (I'm not advertising or affiliated, just pointing out the type of setup other courses might aspire to), and you'll see the definition of care and dedication to the sport.
Outside the old converted park house is a practice driving area (yes, driving into a net from dedicated strips of concrete allowing you to run up, work on your x-step, etc), an astroturfed, dedicated putting basket, and a second practice basket to work on upshots.
The course itself has extra large teepads, detailed signage, benches, trash receptacles, and new baskets this year. Fairways are always well maintained, and paths are mulched and/or graveled. Bathrooms and shelters are located on a few locations along the path of the course. The rough seems more focused on punishing bad shots than on making your discs disappear (and even if you lose one, this is the most likely place to have a found disc wind up in the box at the pro shop, so check there if you've ever been so unfortunate...)
The folks who keep Mt.Airy one of the best city park courses in the world demonstrate their devotion in the simple things, like constantly improving, expanding, or building better erosion control around a teebox here or there, or regularly moving the basket placements (just stop in the shop and they'll provide a map and scorecard, and let you know that day's configuration). And the locals who play here are mostly very knowledgeable and helpful to newcomers (like me).
Rather than multiple tees, Mt. Airy features many alternate pin positions, and the longs can really increase (boo!) the scores for novice and rec players. I put this in the plus column, because I aspire to compete with intermediate and advanced players, for whom this course is a challenge.
Mt. Airy hosts many tournaments throughout the year, and weekly ace funds and doubles, yet is big enough and challenging enough to minimize having too many casual players, and is therefore seldom overcrowded.
There are a number of memorable holes, starting with #1, which requires a right-bending tee shot over the ridge, an approach into the woods, and a decent putt to hit par (of course I envy those who can deuce this one). #2 goes through a set of guardian trees, across the drive, and over to one of three just-blind pin positions. #3 is a tricky left-turning shot with the only mando on the course. Skipping ahead, #5 is a huge dogleg right that requires power and precision to keep your shots between the tree line and the road. #8 is the most aceable hole, while I enjoy #10 the most (well...it's a downhill beauty!) - with the possible exception of #15, which may be even more magnificent. Come take a look, and decide which you like best. #17 goes long over two ridges and beyond some towering pines. You finish with a long but tightening line back behind the pro shop on #18.
There are Temp holes employed for tournaments, and they even set the course up for a 30 hole birdie bash once or twice a year.
There are still rumors of expansion (even another 18 coming?) in the park.

Cons:

Negatives are few, and difficult to change anyway. The wet season in the fall can cause some of the sloping fairways to be a treacherous walk, but I guess if I'd have thrown my discs where I meant to, I would've been walking on more level ground (gotta try it that way next time it's wet, huh?).
Because of the layout and growth of the course, it's a fairly long walk from #6 basket to #7 tee, and if #11 is in the long position past the creek, there's a considerable hike back up #11's blind fairway to #12's tee. And there is no front nine/ back nine loop: but you're here to play it all, anyway!

Other Thoughts:

Obviously, if you're coming to Cincinnati as a serious disc golfer, you will want to get in a round here.

mt anny... getting better 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 5, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

mt. airy mixes moderately wooded fairways with good distance capped off with inconspicuously tough greens. you will need your entire arsenal off the tees (esspecially annys and straight shots). even good drives will lead to ups that can't be taken for granted due to the difficulty of many of the greens. This course has a wonderful mix of open to heavily wooded drives, but doesnt have those annoying trees that are in the middle of the fairway where you want to put your disc. Instead, any fairway trees actually shape the fairways so that good clean shots get rewarded not rejected.
New pins have been added recently which help add variety to the course. A lot of these new pins can be added due to extensive work put into cleaning up the roughs just off the fairways. just a couple of years ago arrent tee shots could be lost just yards from the shot grass. now the rough is exactly what it should be, poor drives rarely result in pars or birdies, but now at least you can find your disc and attempt a desent recovery. Places that might once have been in the deepest darkest abiss now feature baskets on nicely wooded greens. The new pin locations also add a bit of a distance variety that the course sorely lacked.

Cons:

Even with the before mentioned pin variety, the distances can still be a little static. I through rhbh and forehand both about 300'. I dont think there is a less enjoyable distance for this course. I find myself throwing my sidewinder either straight or w/ anny on almost all of the drives resulting on alot of ups slightly outside of putter range. With the new placements i get one or two more chances at bird and there are a few more true 2 shot par 4s but still a lot of annys.

Other Thoughts:

When you think of mt. airy its hard to pick a signature hole. there are a lot of great holes but not much stands out as... magestic i guess is the word. 15 might stand out the most and is a wonderful hole... one of my favorites in all of disc golf. but im going to talk about one that i think encompasses what mt. airy is.
hole 4 is as forgetable a hole as there is but is a classic mt airy hole. a little under 400' it requires a straight drive that penetrates a few columns of fariway trees. after about 200 feet the hole opens up into a nice landing area for your up (one that is 10 times harder than it looks). a good drive will leave me another 60 or so feet of flat fairway before a 40 degree dropoff on which the basket sits. Its hard to stop your disc on that hill and not go 25 feet past. (I throw a banger that likes to sit down for me and doesnt pick up and glide way past). It isnt a hole that stands out but is what mt. anny is about. a good clean drive a nice well executed up will leave you with a put for 3, yet 4s are just as common.
A final thought about mt. airy... it is an exellent course that will challenge players of all caliber. It really is only lacking that word i was looking for earlier...majestic. Maybe im bias with idlewild near by but i guess i wish there was a little more water... there is a small creek or two that run near the course yet never really come into play. hole 11 is a perfect chance for that... moving the basket back over the creek would change that hole from the mt. airy typical (fairly tight anny drive, short but hard up, putt at 3) to a hole with some pizazz... which is the only thing this great course is missing... pizazz
(update) OMG so i go to mt. airy the other day and guess where there is a new basket...across the creek on hole 11, i couldnt believe it. It was fun to play and a true 2 shot hole... what also makes this green unique to at airy is that it is a green you can run at and not be penalized as it is on an up slope. If you can make the gap on the 2nd shot it only adds a half stroke to the hole, but more importantly variety... great job fred.
also ive added a half star to the course with these new baskets and the wonderful warm up area they have been developing over the last couple years... A throwing net, a couple of warmup baskets, and some equalizers hanging from the pro shop door. Great job.

Favorite Course in Cincinnati 2+ years drive by

Pros:

This course will test every shot you have.

Great tee pads with new red DGA baskets.

Course is always well taken care of.

The Nati Disc Golf Shop at the first tee with any disc you would want. The staff there is fantastic.

Driving net to warm up your arm before your round, putting basket and a basket to practice your approach shots.

Benches and trash buckets on every hole

Cons:

A long course so beginners will have lots of trouble.

Can get muddy when it rains a lot or the snow melts.

People starting on hole 14 instead of hole 1 and slowing your round down because of it.

Other Thoughts:

Beautiful course set up in a championship setting.

The owner, Fred, is one of the nicest guys you will meet and is willing to give you pointers if you ask.

Very little to complain about as this is my favorite course in the NKY/Cincinnati area.

Be ready to be elated and frustrated with your shots because this course is not easy.

Wow Factor for the Big Guns 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Dec 26, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ One set of concrete tees and three pin placements (long, longer, and longest).

+ Absolutely gorgeous course, with sweeping hills, valleys, woods etc.

+ First rate full service Disc Golf store (The Nati) on site!

+ Brand new baskets.

+ Very friendly and knowlegable locals.

+ Plenty of parking, restrooms, picnic tables, pavilions, and a playground.

+ Benches and trash buckets at almost every hole.

+ Course is impeccably maintained. Mowed grass fairways, large concrete tees in great condition, and I didn't even see a cigarette butt on the ground anywhere. They have alot of pride in this course, and it shows!

Cons:

- Course navigation flows generally pretty good, but there was a long walk between two of the holes. I would recomend getting a map, or playing with a local on your 1st time through.

- One set of tee pads. On a long course like this, I would like to see a short set of tees, to make the course more accesible.

- I would have liked to have seen more holes in the woods. Most of the holes play in between the woods and the road, so there is plenty of ob. The locals said the city doesn't really want people in the woods, but hopefully this changes in the future.(There is some evidence of this already with the two alternate holes in the woods).

Other Thoughts:

Overall, a great course in an area known for its awesome courses.

This course is LONG. I would not recommend it for beginers, but anyone of at least an intermediate level of skill will have a blast here.

Friendly and dedicated locals, and nice courses with something for everyone, make the greater Cincinnati area a "destination" city for disc golf. I can't wait to come back!

Beautiful Round 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 15, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- To start off the warm up area in unmatched. With the practice baskets and the driving net. A great way to prepare for the challenge ahead. And if you need a disc the pro shop has everything.
- Scorecards in the clubhouse with a map that makes up for the lack of signage. Take one with you.
- This course demands a variety of shots with a great mix of open areas to wooded areas.
- Proper use of the elevation that graces the park. And the course is well maintained. Bring comfortable shoes.
- Bathrooms, I think after hole #4. (also provided shelter during a pop-up thunderstorm). Also plenty of benches at the tee pads.

Cons:

- Naturally I would like to see better signage.
- A few times park pedestrians have come into play. It is a public park so this can be expected.
- Make sure you check the map for the long walk in between 6 and 7.

Other Thoughts:

At first this course was a little overwhelming, but each time I play it I enjoy it more and more. So if you play it for the first time and don't enjoy your round, don't give up on it. Also with the community in Cincinnati it seems as though this course is well taken care of, so I am excited to see the improvements as the years go on.
If you enjoy a fun challenging course that take a little less than 2 hours to play this is the course for you. It is truly a beautiful piece of land that is well maintained by the city.

Pros:

The course has a nice practice basket, a great pro shop, and generally the players are great. The course is challenging and great chances to make some tricky shots. The scenery is great, some wooded holes and the design is well thought out. I played twice today and found out that on hole 17 (possibly others) they switched the location of the basket. all of the baskets are in great shape.

Cons:

The Tee signs don't exist on some holes so by my guess i play them as par 3's since they have many long par 3's.

The Country Club To The Max 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 13, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course has a very high fun factor and is such a good experience. The fact that there is a pro shop and practice area is a really nice touch. I have never seen the practice driving range before. The design of the course is potentially one of my favorite designs out there. This is a park course that makes use of the land and natural features of a park course with really only one filler hole. The whole area is well maintained. There is a nice little play ground in the middle of the course which may contribute to some foot traffic but the design of the course really minimizes this. There were buckets at every tee sign and the tee signs were really nice. The tee pads were nice consistent concrete. There was a really good mix of holes and very few holes that felt like any other hole on the course. There are several holes that are marked as more than a par 3 but rightfully deserve the par that they have.

Cons:

Some of the baskets are a bit tough to find at first but that is more due to the length and hiddenness of the baskets. There is a long walk from hole 6 to 7, but I guess it had to happen at some point. Hole 16 is a bit tricky to find only because you finish hole 15 and immediately want to go to hole 17 which is nice and easy to see. The parking lot near the pro shop may be a little bit small for a busy day though there was not a lot of traffic on a monday morning.

Other Thoughts:

This course was just a lot of fun and a very fair course. It was hard but not insane, it was good even for a beginner. The course defiantely makes use of length but not to a fault. I really enjoyed holes 1, 15, 16 and 18. This is a must play course, maybe even more so than some of the other highly rated courses in the tri state area.

Excellent course, Tough challenge 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 1, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Mt. Airy gives even seasoned players a run for their money. Adjacent to the clubhouse is a large net for warming up and a practice basket. I recommend utilizing these because you'll need your game to be on starting with hole one. The clubhouse has a friendly staff and a wide selection of discs to choose from. Now on to the course. Fairways have moderate to heavy woods that can leave you scratching your head after a bad shot. Basket placements are fair and seemingly all are on some sort of slope or at least right near one. There's not a lot of thick underbrush in the rough but enough on certain holes that errant shots/kicks will leave you searching. Course has some considerable length and all these shots favor accuracy over distance. Be sure to make your birdies count on this course and in most cases 3's are good scores. Tee pads were generally in good condition with those on slopes having an extra few feet of ground level with the tee on the ends for follow through steps. Course has several stair cases and gravel walking trails throughout that aid in navigation and safety. More of these amenities are continually being installed/updated.

Cons:

As mentioned by others, several tee signs are missing and others are dirty from people writing on them over the years. Also, some (but not many) of the teepads are cracked and may affect footing. Worth mentioning because I've seen it happen multiple times, near number 14's basket (formerly number 1) are several picnic tables that get used regularly by families. Though hitting these tables is highly unlikely, children like to play near the basket and are generally unaware of disc golfers and the risk of getting hit. So be careful of that.

Other Thoughts:

Mt. Airy can be a fun course to bring people of all skill levels to, just don't make them keep score. When playing near dusk or just after dawn there's usually a good chance you'll come across deer throughout the course. With that, be sure to watch where you step due to their droppings. Overall Airy has several very scenic shots and a lot of character. It provides a different challenge that you won't come across at neither Banklick/Lincoln Ridge or Idlewild. It ranks among my top ten favorite courses I've played. Thanks to the GCFDA for all their work they do for this course.

Pros:

-The sign on the tee is very nice and it shows you exactly where the whole is and where to go to get to the next tee
-Every whole challenges you in a different way
-There is a store right by the first tee and it has alot to offer
-They mix it up between par 3's and par 4's
-Every whole is different some are open fields while others make you be accurate and actually aim for something
-There is no water so you couldn't lose your disc in there
-The baskets are very nice and also very official
-It is located in a very nice park

Cons:

-It is in the woods so on some holes it will be easy to lose your disc
-Some of the par 3's should be par 4's and some par 4's should be par 5's
-There are no par 5's
-It is very hard to do good here and end below par
-On some of the holes the sign isn't even there so you dont know what par is, where the pin is located, and how far away the pin is from the tee

Other Thoughts:

I came here on quite a windy day so i would like to come back when it isn't so windy. That may have been some of the problen. But overall i thought that this was a nice course that could use some work. I know they are redoing many things so the course will be on top one day.

Compares to Idlewild 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 15, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Situated in a beautiful national forest with amazing scenery, Mt. Airy Park was a treat to play. In my opinion, the course has what Idlewild does not: the fun factor. I didn't feel exhausted at the end of the round and I truly enjoyed playing the course. The par 4's were true par 4's, and hole 1 was one of the coolest opening holes I have ever played. The course had a good mix of open and tight holes, and also had a good mix of some short and long holes.

Cons:

The only thing keeping Mt. Airy from a 5 rating (besides the small navigational issue after hole 6, which could be fixed with a simple sign) was the fact that the course heavily favors an anhyzer throw for a right-hander or a hyzer throw for a left-hander. Off the top of my head, the longest 6 holes on the course favored that type of throw. In my opinion, that is a design flaw because the course didn't offer the opportunity for that type of throw on the long holes. The best throw on those holes was an S curve or a long anhyzer, and the long hyzer throw wasn't really needed.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, Mt. Airy is right up there with Idlewild because of the fun factor. It ranks ahead of Lincoln Ridge in my opinion because of the beautiful scenery. This course was really a treat and seems to really be setup for multiple courses in the park. The pro shop was also awesome!

Mt. Airy 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 17, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

One of the original World's courses. It is a very challenging course. Good for beginners but expect a higher number of throws. The course is rolling with numerous trees to challenge even the seasoned pro.

The course now has a pro shop where hole 1 is located. One can pick up discs, supplies, drinks and snacks.

Cons:

Hole 5 is an almost impossible par 4 due the maturing trees along and in the fairway. A couple holes can get a little slippery with a little rain. A couple holes get close to picnic tables.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, a very fun course. Mt.Airy in Cincy, Lincoln Ridge and Idlewild in Kentucky (just across the river) can make for a great and exhausting day of disc golf.

Mt. Airy 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 10, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Awesome course. Nice concrete tee pads (excluding the new holes still not poured). Helpful tee signs. Nicely kept always mowed. Course is very challenging, Hole 5 wrapping a long way around brush and against the road, very hard par 4. Many blind shots on the course. Good elevation changes in the course. Nice variance of long and short mostly long. Many tight fairways that require a great deal of precision. Fairways are well defined because the rough is pretty dang rough. Long course takes a while to play through, not for a first time player thats for sure. Pro Shop at the course!!! That is awesome.

Cons:

Is heavily played and isn't as beautiful as it used to be. Flow can be confusing.

Other Thoughts:

I liked the old course before they took out the heavy deep woods holes.

Fantastic layout and challenge 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 13, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Every hole fits well in the overall design. Nothing seems artificial, extravagant, or out of place.

General features I like most:

Long holes that require different strategies: I have no power, but appreciate a course that rewards those who throw 300+ feet with control. At #1, the first shot should ideally stay high to the left, and at least crest the uphill for the tight dogleg right approach. The 17th has several roller coaster hills and trees to navigate. The 5th is long and essentially straight, and slopes down to the brush on the right. You need to stay left, and just keep going until you hole out. It was a bear for my most reliable left-right forehand.

Doglegs of various severity: several with generous landing areas, and a well-defined best line of play. The 15th begs for a long strong drive that stays safe on the high left side, but the fairway is wide enough to accept a bit of left-to-right drift.

Excellent basket placement, including the 1st and 17th: Others of note when I played - the 4th stands on a slight slope and gap in the woods. 11th is great for risk-reward. On a steep wooded slope that could drop all the way to a dry creekbed with bad enough luck. 13th basket to the far right maximizes the dogleg. 15th stands on the crown of a cleared hill, with the forest on all sides.

Again, the challenge: The 6th through the 8th provided about the only chance for a par without my best shotmaking. Of course that gives another clue to my limited ability. 15-17 are relentlessly tough closing holes. The 16th is relatively long and very tight, snaking through the woods. 18th offers a bit of a relief, but not much if the pin is back.

Great pro shop: lots of discs and a very friendly staff. There's a net set up outside to practice full throws - a big help given the immediate challenge of #1, and the number of people at the course.

Cons:

Nothing too serious. This course isn't fancy like some. Simple signs. Most baskets are well-worn. Some of the cement tees are cracked, but somebody put in a lot of effort to get them level.

Only one set of tees, with almost no gimme holes. If you're not good, you should at least be good-tempered. I've already mentioned the challenge as a plus, but for some it would be a definite problem. I will not be taking my daughters to this one.

Other Thoughts:

Lots of blind shots. It's essential to pick up a map at the pro shop, especially to get from basket to tee in a few cases. Experience should make a big difference in scoring. Wishful thinking for me.

Never played the previous layout, but the current setup seems great. Lots of mid-afternoon mid-week golfers when I was out, and nobody minded my wildness. No conflicts with non-golfers in the park area either.
