Excellent Range Of Play drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 28, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Course is half open, half wooded. Two different layouts available. Range of different shots to throw. Cool owners. Well manicured.

Cons:

Looking forward to maybe upgraded signs one day that show basket locations, could help newer folks. Basket hole numbers could also assist with this.

North Wind Winds Up 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 28, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ The whole course plays on a spacious and quiet piece of nicely maintained and manicured grounds surrounding a private residence.
+ This independent course boasts a robust waiting area complete with information kiosk, pay box, scorecards for the taking, lost disc crate, table and chairs, sign-in binder, practice basket and port-a-john. A fair few courses out there could learn a thing or two from this place.
+ Bricks with painted arrows can be found below a majority of the baskets to guide players along.
+ A few water hazards add a nice basting of tension to some holes.
+ Some gentle elevation throughout.
+ Most tee pads are flat, sturdy, wide and long made of varying types of bricks and pavers within wooden frames, but...

Cons:

- ...a noticeable amount of the tee areas are yet unfinished. Those are either gravel and rocks or a large slab of slate as a placeholder.
- The tee signs, while present on all holes with pars and distances, lack a diagram of what's ahead. This isn't as much an issue on the front nine as much as on the back nine with hidden baskets and blind turns.
- Also, the distances on the scorecards and tee signs don't match.
- A few safety issues present in the form of exposed roots, short & narrow tree stumps and fairways that get too close to one another such as 3+5 and 7+8. This would only be an issue on busy days, though.

Other Thoughts:

My favorite hole here to look at was hole11 because all at once we switch from bright, open, flat and obvious to dark, narrow, bumpy and unknown. It shakes the player awake to see after a sunny front nine. My favorite hole here to play was hole15. The downhill tunnel felt wide and fair and had just enough drama with that initial clear area and OB road on the left. My least favorite hole could have been hole5. It was wide open and nearly featureless, save for the OB rock wall.

I can say that this is the course that forced me to confront my own disc golf biases. North Wind disc golf course is an unassuming circuit of 18 that strikes a near-perfect balance between wide open holes on the front nine and wooded holes on the back nine. The gear shift is almost audible. Once you set foot on hole10's tee, you see the trees ahead and know that the wide open holes are over. I caught myself having more fun in the second half, which forced me to realize that I honestly do prefer disc golf courses in the woods. I kind of always suspected it, but only after a round at this course did I come to truly acknowledge it.

As for the course as a whole, North Wind is a budding success. The distances are surprising, considering it is on private property. Open holes are here for the power throwers. Tight tree puzzles are here for the tacticians. There are water features here for the daredevils. There is plenty of well-marked OB to make things even more challenging. I wouldn't say that anything here is jaw-dropping in terms of fairways or scenery. It's a solid course that hits all the right notes of open and wooded holes. Some of the tee pads need to be finished, and the tee signs could benefit from an upgrade. I should mention that I was a little puzzled by all of the extra baskets that I saw dotting the grounds. This leads me to believe that there is a short layout planned for the future? That's something to look forward to so new players can get in on the action. It does cost five dollars to play, but I think that is definitely worth it.

I had the good fortune to bump into the course desginer's father as I was gathering my belongings before I left. During our conversation, he informed me that his son is largely responsible for the vision behind and the layout of North Wind with help from him and other volunteers. I regret that I never thought to ask for his or his son's names so I could give credit where it is due. If anyone reading this knows who those people are, then please feel free to alter the 'Course Info' section. It was a thrill to learn that I was physically interacting with an individual's ambitions. They are humble and eager to improve. It is admittedly unfinished. However, once the details are nailed down and the edges polished, I forsee North Wind solidifying itself as a place where people know they can go to have a laid-back and pleasant disc golf experience in the middle of New Hampshire.
