Pros:
1) Post with the hole # on it helps you to navigate your way to the next hole.
2) Chainstar baskets are my favorite catching basket. They may be tough to find on wooded properties but powder coating would help . . . finding the basket is way less important than the catching ability however in my opinion.
3) Very short course and is very beginner friendly (for the most part). Obviously this is a school course and it is very important that the course should not frustrate the school kids.
4) Excellent design of the holes and the course for the intended target . . . school kids.
5) Nice mix of open & wooded holes on this course. It sure is nice to have the balance of open turfed holes with wooded holes. I love all types of throws and I certainly prefer to have some of each.
6) There is an adequate variation in distance on this course to make you throw a lot of different discs in your bag. Although the wooded holes are similar in distance, the open holes do allow you to "open things up a bit" adding to the overall variety.
7) It is a fun course to throw and if you like to make birdies this is your course. You might take an errant kick from time to time but you can execute the shots on this course and be rewarded with birdies. I shot (-8) the first time I played the course and feel like if I hit my lines I would easily pull off a (-12 to-14). Making that many birdies on challenging shots has to be considered fun!
Cons:
1) No run-up in the woods at all on quite a few holes. There are virtually no fairways in spots and to also have no run-up on the tee makes for a frustrating driving experience. There is almost no actually tee area on a few of the holes because of the tee-sign coupled with a lumpy or tiny area. I stood still on many drives.
2) Grass tees are ok in spots but overall a negative. I realize there is no reason to have concrete on a school course intended for the school kids, but I always prefer to play off of concrete.
3) If you want to play 18 holes here be ready to search for the other 9. One nine is by the Middle School and one is by the High School. It is separated by a minimum 200-400 yard walk between courses. I actually parked by the south course first and figured I would just drive to the far north end of the property to try and spot another basket. It worked, but I have never had to drive between front 9 and back 9 on a course before.
4) There are hardly any legitimate fairways on a few of the holes in the woods, especially on the north side of the course (back 9). I literally had no idea where to throw on 2 or 3 holes and just kind of winged it . . . holes that have no real fairway are not good design, they rely too heavily on luck.
Other Thoughts:
I enjoyed the course overall, there are some issues, but some of it has to do with the fact this is a school course geared towards the kids that go to school there. Some of them are design oriented which are what takes away from the overall design more than any other con. Some other issues are maintenance related, where I have a feeling a little bit of maintenance work could go a long way on how the course plays. I also feel like if the spent a little bit of money and a few hours of time, they could have an extremely nice course. Tees that are virtually non-existent, some fairways that could use some definition, and a few other maintenance issues could really turn my opinion of this course from a 2.5 to a 3.5 in no time. Does this course need to be a 3.5 NO, so I do not blame the school for the current condition of the course. Just because I like something a particular way, or that many tournament players might appreciate something a certain way, does not mean they need to cater to us. They have a school course for high schoolers and middle schoolers. While it might serve other people, it should not necessarily cater to anyone but the students in their school. With that said l rate courses on my own set of criteria so this ends up in the middle of the road "for me", although as it is designed for a specific target market it hits the mark for the intended target market. It serves the purpose for the beginners and exposes them to a lot of different things. I would rate this course very highly if I was part of the intended target market. I hope I didn't confuse anyone with all of that!
