Brownsburg's Best, (And Only), 18

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 4, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

+OPEN AND WOODED HOLES: There is some variety here. While the majority of the holes are not in the woods, one is fully wooded and there are several that are partially wooded.
+MIX OF LINES: There are holes that test both your forehand and backhand. If you don't have a forehand or backhand turnover, (or vice-versa), this course will be tough.
+USE OF POND: There is a small pond that comes into play on multiple holes. I would argue that they did a good job utilizing it. The main hole that uses it is hole 5, a 250-foot hole that plays almost completely over the pond. If you are not confident in reaching that distance accurately, I would suggest skipping that hole.
+DISTANCE: The distance is good for intermediate players. The holes are mostly in the 200'-350' range, with a few being shorter or longer than that.
+EQUIPMENT: All of the equipment here is top-notch. The Prodigy baskets catch well, the tee pads are typical concrete, and the tee signs are informative and have bag hooks. UPDATE: Apparently, I hadn't spent enough time with the baskets to discover that they hate anything less than Gannon Buhr's putt. I hit a putt center-strongside, and it fell out, apparently because it wasn't hard enough. If you putt with the force of a Colt 45, you should love these baskets. Otherwise, use caution.

Cons:

-OPEN HOLES: Some of the open holes are really open. I would like to see a few trees or other obstacles on some of them.
-COURSE FLOW: The flow of the course is not very intuitive in spots. In one place, there are about 4 tees all placed in a similar area. Luckly, the tee signs and Udisc exist.
-PRAIRIE GRASS: Lots of the fairways are defined by prairie grass. I'm not a fan of this. I have yet to play this course in the summer, but I have heard that it grows quite tall and has a voracious appetite for discs. You have been warned.
-WALKING TRAIL: There is a walking trail that wraps around the parameter of the course and interacts with several holes. As with any course that has this issue, it isn't a problem on non-busy days, but if a lot of people are walking, prepare to be delayed.

Other Thoughts:

=There are some pretty funny reviews on Udisc for this course. Check them out if you get a chance.
=The baskets are painted purple, which is kind of fun.
=While I enjoy this course overall, I do feel like it isn't the most fun course around. I feel like the layout could be better overall. That being said, this isn't a bad course to stop by and play. Not the best in Hendricks County, but it is a decent, complete 18-hole course.

Pros:

Northwest Park DGC spans most of the eponymous Northwest Park which is located just behind a church/school. There's a practice basket right by hole 1's tee, located conveniently close to the parking lot.

Speaking of baskets this course boasts some of the nicest around. They're made by Prodigy and I'm not sure of the exact model but they catch about as well as Jerry Rice. There are some soccer fields close to 18's tee to warm up at as well.

The course's 18 holes flow intuitively for the most part. There is some variety to be found here. Most of the longer holes range around 300-350 along fairly narrow fairways but the rough isn't too punishing. The pond does come in to play on holes 1, 4, 5 and 6 and 18; with hole 5 requiring around 225 feet of carry and no real option to lay up if you want par. A few holes require some short technical shots and hole 7 is a 185 foot Island green.

The park is clean and tidy. There's a playground and some sheltered picnic tables by hole 1 so there's potential here to make this a family affair. Portalets can be found near the parking lot so no worries there.

Cons:

There is a lot of OB and mandos here. Since there are a lot of walking paths I can't fault the designers but it really does force your shot selection and can get frustrating.

The longer holes mostly run together and can get pretty repetitive. Holes 13 and 14 abut private property and hole 14's fairway doesn't exist as far as I can tell.

It's pretty easy to lose a disc to the pond. On the plus side I have had a disc returned and my friend has as well.

The rough along hole 18 can get pretty gnarly in the summertime.

Other Thoughts:

This course certainly has it's moments. You can tell a lot of work and thought went in to the current layout. All the OB and mandos and water can get pretty taxing however. And usually by the end of my round I'm just glad it's over and especially thankful if I'm leaving with all the discs I brought with me.
