Remember Kids: A 59 Foot Ace Still Counts The Same As An Ace Anywhere Else

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 25, 2022 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Oakville Middle School is home to a new 9-hole disc golf course that makes use of the fields and open areas around the school. This short course is open to the public outside of school hours and is a nice track for both students at the school as well as new players or families to get to know the game on.

Location of Oakville Middle is on Telegraph Road in South County, which is very accessible from I-255. There are plenty of restaurants and gas stations to choose from nearby for any needs you have before or after your round. Arnold City Park is the closest course to Oakville Middle, and is another relatively short 9-hole which could use some TLC. Jefferson Barracks, arguably the elder statesman of St. Louis disc golf, has a 36-hole complex 4 miles up the road, so you could use Oakville as a quick warm up.

Course Equipment looks to be in-progress, but what's in place is above what I'd expect to see at a course like this. There are 9 baskets that are a mix between white Patriots and Yellow Lat-64 Pros, all of which have that new basket shine and are in perfect condition. Tee pads vary currently, with two concrete tees set up on holes 2 and 3. The rest of the tees are either natural or use the track on site according to UDisc, with the natural tees mostly being spray painted. The grass is was nice and short, making it easy to spot the paint, and as a school I imagine there's a grounds crew that will keep the grass consistently short unlike some other courses in the area (*cough* WILLMORE).

Course Design at Oakville Middle is short with limited obstacles to navigate, both great attributes for a course that likely will get a lot of play from PE classes and families. The school grounds have plenty of open spaces, and the course snakes around to make the most of the land available. Any intermediate and up player likely won't need many or any drivers for this course, but there's enough variety to keep things interesting.

Shot-Shaping isn't a skill this course is going to challenge too much, but there were some nice surprises to find here. Hole 1 is a nicely designed hole that requires you to either chuck a wider right turning shot to avoid a line of trees, or for you to navigate some small gaps to find a putt for birdie. Hole 4 as it currently stands is a left turning shot around the edge of the tennis courts to a pin that resides on a little hill, with the track providing a skip opportunity. The rest of the holes mainly play straight, allowing new players to try different shots out as they learn what works for them.

Elevation is also limited but is still present. Holes 2 and 7 play more downhill, while 8 has a hill that can make a comeback putt nervy.

Distances are mainly short, but a couple holes eclipse 300 feet, which will challenge younger or new players. Most of the holes are 150-300 feet long, with hole 6 and especially hole 9 being runnable for any player.

Difficulty is great for this courses target audience, a short course that is great for young and new players to learn the game on. Intermediate and up players will not be very challenged on this course, but there's still some fun to be had here for more experienced players.

Cons:

Course Equipment is still in progress, as this is a very new course. With a couple of concrete tees in place already, I am under the impression that the other seven holes will get dedicated tees in due time, either via concrete tees being added or designated tee areas being added to the track for holes 5, 6, 7, and 9. There is no signage currently, which can make navigate hard if you don' have UDisc. If you do have the app handy, then navigation isn't an issue.

Navigation as stated above, can be weird if you don't have UDisc until signage is added. Some tee locations are not marked at all yet, possibly because the course is still undergoing fine tuning. While some holes do have spray paint or other markings, holes 7 and 8 don't have any reference points, so anyone without UDisc will be left guessing where to throw from.

Course Design, while perfect for the target audience, probably won't be a popular spot for more experienced players in the area. Unless you get some serious sustained winds like my friend and I had on our round, this course will be a breeze for any seasoned player. Considering JB is just up the road, I'd recommend looking for a different course is you are looking for a more challenging round.

Possible Amenity Conflicts are present, with tennis courts, a track, and other fields that may be used for other sports in play of many holes. I'm not docking the course for this, as I'm not sure how much use these grounds get outside of school hours. Just be aware other folks might be around. Some folks were using the track while we were at the course, which I imagine is the most likely place to see people here.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, Oakville Middle School's course design exceeded the expectations I had. The course is appropriately challenging for who is going to be playing this course most often, but some of the challenges are present were nice surprises. The course is still in progress, and once it has more navigation assistance in place it will likely get a higher score from me.

This course design is likely still being tweaked and may get some additional adjustments before getting the rest of the permanent tees in place. What is currently set up on UDisc is pretty nice and makes for some fun tee shots. Perhaps the most fun shot in my opinion is the 59-foot ace run that you end your round on. This may change, but I personally am highly in favor of having a local hole being within circle 2. And if you ace it, don't let any fun suckers try to dampen your joy. An ace is an ace (Yes, I'm feeling defensive of my ace).

If you're looking for a quick and easy 9-hole course, this is a great option for you that can be combined with Arnold City Park, JB, or the courses around I-270 and I-44 southwest of St. Louis. While it's nice when a premier course is installed nearby, it's also great to see beginner tracks like this be installed as well. I love that a local school saw disc golf as a good investment, and my understanding is that a few other local schools have courses in lace as well. Disc Golf is getting more and more attention, and I want to shoutout Oakville Middle for helping grow the sport.
