Course Baggin Chronicles – Episode One - The Phive-Hole Menace 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 26, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

(1.276 Rating) A multi-use park with a shockingly well put together five-basket course.
- BEGINNER FRIENDLY - A very Beginner and Novice friendly layout. Perhaps even more so than the church course down the road as that one has a couple water clears. The only issue that a Beginner or Novice player might have here is grip locking one over a property fence or throwing one on top of a park building roof. I'll also point out that there is no overgrowth here and the hole lengths are very much on the shorter side.
- CHAINS - MachIIIs that are in perfect shape.
- TEES - Nice sized, well-constructed and newly poured concrete tees.
- SIGNAGE - Well done tee signage. They don't have an artistic description of the hole, but it's not needed for this style of course. Every basket can be seen from the tee.
- NAVIGATION - Open enough to see the next tees sign from the prior basket. The course starts at 7 o-clock and plays in a clockwise loop. Basket (5) and tee (1) are near each other. I had absolutely no issues traversing this course.
- QUICK PLAY - It can be bagged in ten minutes.
- MAINTENANCE - Mowed grass throughout. I saw no tree limbs or branches down on the course and it was trash free. The course was in amazing shape on my visit.
- LOCATION - One of 3 courses I bagged in the area in 75 minutes, and I photographed all three for DGCR.

Cons:

The five-basket aspect really affects the rating for this course.
- LACK OF CHALLENGE - I was hoping to shoot 5 down to no avail. Although the shots are relatively easy for skilled players, players still have to miss a couple trees or even split gaps on a couple tee offs. I'll fathom a guess and say that even par would draw around an 800 rated round.
- EXTRAS - The basics of tees, baskets and signage, as noted above, were done well. However, that's where it ends. There aren't any multi tees, alternate baskets, practice baskets, benches or course map. There was a mailbox next to tee (1), but it was empty.
- HOLE VARIETY - With only five holes, one can thus expect a layout lacking in diversity. All the plays are park style with light to moderate tree coverage. The distance variation is minimal and there is little elevation change. No water features or rock features to spice up a hole line.
- SPACING - This 4.5 acre park has more activity going on in it than just the five-hole disc golf course. There's parking, park shelters, a restroom building and lots of playground equipment dispersed about. So it's no surprise that some of these other features come into play a bit. To be fair, the amount of interaction is only moderate, and I could tell that the holes were designed to try and minimize conflicts.

Other Thoughts:

This was the 5th time I've played a five-basket course, and it's my highest rated of the bunch. I would bet that many of the locals wished it had room for four more holes. I honestly wished it was one more to make six holes total. That way three rounds would be 18 holes. Oscar Johnson probably isn't going to comand a large following since there are two other niners nearby, but this addition will definitely allow the town residents the opportunity to switch it up on occasion.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - About average, but for courses I've rated this low, the average score for beauty actually brought my total rating score up. The maintenance was superb, the trees were healthy and mulched. However, lots of manmade structures were in view the entire time, and that keeps my score from going any higher.
