Blown away . . . literally

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 19, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

I enjoyed playing here. Designers did a nice job of using scattered trees to shape lines and protect the basket on drives, approaches, and even some putts (but see cons). The course had a lot more line shaping than I expected from the "lightly wooded" description.

Good mix of left, right, and straight drives. On many holes the scattered trees allow different lines, which could increase replay value. Hole 7 has a mando that forces a left-to-right drive.

Red-banded Chainstar Pro baskets stood out nicely and caught well (but see cons).

Cons:

The course is dead flat and fairly open. When I played 20-30 mph winds were howling, and the trees provided little to no shelter. I even had one dead-center putt get blown out of the chains.

Natural tees, mostly mud when I played, were marked with two bricks (red for red tees and blue for blue tees). Tee posts had the hole number in black mounted on a metal garden stake, also black. The combination of natural tees, thin black tee posts, and no "next tee" indicators made navigation difficult.

Quite a few baskets were tucked among or behind evergreen trees. This added disc golf interest but often left the basket hidden from the tee. With poorly market tees and hidden baskets, I would have been lost without UDisc. This should not be a problem for locals, just traveling players.

Walking paths and a park road meander through the course, directly in the line of fire on a few holes. On a weekday morning in December I saw lots of dog walkers and other pedestrians using the walking paths. I did not have any conflicts while playing, but at busier times I would expect the potential for safety hazards to be greater.

Other Thoughts:

At least one internet source rates Amarillo as the windiest major city in the U.S. If you play here, assume windy conditions and plan accordingly. If nothing else, this is a good place to work on your wind game.

Strictly for quality of play I would rate this course 2.0, which is pretty respectable for a 9-hole course. Unfortunately, I have to subtract 0.5 points for the potential safety hazards, natural tees, and poor navigation.
