Nicely done urban beginner course

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 2, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

Palmer Park Junior is a beginner-friendly course in an attractive urban park. The course plays in and out of the woods, and the more open holes have mature trees to work around. Hole lengths average around 130' and range from 93' to 170'. Grab a putter or two and run some aces!

Excellent beginner track, and fun approach practice for more experienced players. Despite the short distances, every hole has its challenges and some are quite tricky but fair. I particularly enjoyed the "barricade hole" (#7, maybe?), which is already a touchy right-turning shot into the woods.

Equipment is well done. Post-mounted tee signs include a map, distance, par, hole number, and direction to the next tee. Concrete tee pads, flush with the ground, are on the small size but perfectly fine for such a short course. Red Chainstar Pro baskets, well mounted, include a "next tee" arrow hanging from the cage (at least for now).

Navigation is efficient, with no unnecessary long walks between holes. The only place I got confused was finding #9's tee, which is just past the #5 tee. Designers did a very nice job of avoiding conflict with other park users.

Low risk of disc loss, especially on the park-style holes.

Cons:

This course is short and flat, with just one set of tees. What makes a course good for beginners can limit its appeal to more experienced players, or to those who prefer bombing long drives.

Other Thoughts:

Driving to Palmer Park, I got a little worried as I passed block after block of abandoned buildings. Fortunately, the historic neighborhood around the park includes quite a few fancy houses and the park itself is lovely.

My first reaction was to assign a rating of 2.0 for this course. While writing this review I realized that, besides short and flat, I could not think of any other cons so I bumped my rating to 2.5.

Kudos to the Paul McBeth foundation for building well-designed beginner courses in underserved areas. Apparently, there is also a wheelchair-friendly layout that has less travel on the grass, at the cost of shared baskets and crossing fairways.
