Quarries DGC 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 8, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

First 5 holes were excellent both to play and to enjoy the scenery. The entire quarry that the course is based around provides an awesome backdrop to the course. Signs at each hole give hole distance and par. There are score cards, pencils and stickers at the start of the course which was very nice. It is a very immersive course because you seem to be very far in the woods. A very nice hike.

Cons:

The fairways were very tight and almost non-existant which demanded a perfect shot on every hole. Very dense woods on both sides of the fairway so once you are off the fairway expect to add several strokes to your game.

Other Thoughts:

It was a beautiful hike with great scenery and cool history. We'd like to go back when we have more experience with technical and highly wooded hole layouts. The course is not at the Brook St. address in Barre, it is at 47 Brook St. GRANITEVILLE.

History huck 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 10, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Quarries is built around an old abandoned section of the vast granite quarries of central VT. It's a heavily wooded course with some use of trails and roads as fairways. I frequent this course because it's just a nice place to walk around and be surrounded by history. Enough about the scenery, Quarries demands accuracy more than distance, placement and strategy is key if you want to score well. Many of the fairways have a winding snake like shape that tactfully pull eyes away from simple strait shot options, at least that's the way it looks to me. Hole 16 is signature in that it has two towering stone walls on either side of the tee that have a sort of medieval feel to them.

Cons:

Some of the tee boxes are raised and shaped with small granite blocks and gravel fill. Even though it is good use of on site material, they lack stability and crumble apart making footing short and uncomfortable. Hole 1 in particular is always a struggle for me to settle into. More of a caution than a con but there is a network of mountain bike trails criss crossing the course that has potential for disc contact. Some of the fairways are lined with cavernous boulder piles that eat discs are dangerous to climb around and search in

Other Thoughts:

I dig this course because it pulls out the midrange skill set a lot instead of just driver driver off every tee.

More Wooded Than Quaries! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 8, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

The name Quaries is a bit misleading I feel as the course had much more of a wooded technical feel to me. There were a couple wonderful views of the quarry and the one hole, # 5, which had you throwing over the water.

The signs are nice colored metal ones showing a map of the hole as well as the distance for both the longer Blues and the shorter White tees. The pads are packed gravel outlined with granite blocks. The baskets are DGA models Mach 5 with the red numbers on top. There are some helpful next tee signs about the course.

I really liked # 5, the simple little throw over the quarry waters. It's only 163' but it's a few feet higher on the other side. And it's a really pretty little hole. On the other hand, I really didn't care much for # 9. It's a 573' par 4 that plays up a road with unforgiving underbrush on both sides. So that's one hole I really liked, one that I really disliked and 16 others that were for the most part, forgettable.

Cons:

The course was quite marshy walking to the # 18 teepad.
The quarry didn't come into play as much as I had hoped for.
Not much of a"Wow" factor here for me.
Would be a little tricky to navigate at times with all the extra signs attached to trees for cross country skiing /snowmobiles.

Other Thoughts:

The course plays as standard recreational level course until you come to # 9, which is a advanced hole all the way. I'd like to see it shortened by about 200 feet.

I was able to join up with Heidi and her boyfriend. I would like to thank them for showing me the course. Heidi joyfully picked up every bottle and can she came across. Every course needs someone like Heidi!

Nice Vermont woods course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 8, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great views of the old granite quarries. Interesting shots, especially 5 over the water, very doable by an intermediate thrower but dramatic with sheer granite walls into water. Well marked next holes. Some nice crushed granite tee pads. Beautiful area and course is getting some real love.

Cons:

Holes 8 and 9 (maybe also 10) are a long slog up hill along a dirt road / snowmobile path. Some long walks between holes. Disc concealing ferns on a few holes (lost one on 6). Be ready for a hike in the woods.

Other Thoughts:

The course caretakers are likely fighting to be able to keep this clear. There are a lot of trees and some high grass. On the first several holes I caught trees mid flight on first drive, but then was able to drive to hole on next try.

The long walk up 8, 9, 10, is rewarded with some very nice views along 12 and 13. If you want to shorten things, after 7 there is a sign to 14, but maybe walk backwards up 13 to catch the quarry view.

If you are on route 89 in Vermont, this is a cool course, 15 minutes off the highway. Definitely worth checking out!

Diamond in the Rough 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 27, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

The Quarries has a nice mix of holes in a very scenic area. I am am intermediate player and though it was tight but had good lanes. I think lefties and flickers will like it as it seemed many holes played left to right. Great use of terrain and had fun on hole 5 with its 170 foot chuck over the open quarry. Hole to hole signage was good.

Cons:

This is a seasonal thing, but was quite muddy and we even skipped 17 because of water. Tee signs seemed hit or miss as far as accurately representing the hole, but were all there.

Other Thoughts:

Keep in mind this is a multi-use area. There are hiking and biking trails winding through the course. Watch out for other people enjoying the area.
I thought the alternate tees were too close to regular tees. Usually not a distance improvement, more like better angles. Im from southern NH and this made a great day trip. Rock of Ages visitors center in nearby and Ben and Jerry's is 20 minutes north on I-89. Will be coming back in the fall for sure.

Challenging new course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 19, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Excellent variety of holes and some great views! Multiple tees on some holes help to even the playing field.

Cons:

Easy to lose discs on a couple of holes in the rocks. Climbing up on them to retrieve discs can be dangerous. New course still needs a little more work - but so far it is a great addition to the VT scene.

Other Thoughts:

I really hope that this course will put up some wire or fencing to prevent discs from sliding into holes and gaps in the huge rock piles that can gobble up discs - and are not really safe to climb on to search for lost discs.
