Pros:
(1.410 Rating) An openish and beginner friendly course.
- BEGINNER FRIENDLY - This is a very solid beginners thru Novice level course, and they may love this course. No chance to the lose a disc unless a players puts it on top of one of the few trees. The fairway lanes are wide and there are no water hazards.
- ACEABILITY - Several holes are aceable. Players will likely ace here five times more often when compared to a normal course.
- TEE PADS - Below average sized tees, but I was happy they were concrete. 4 feet by 8 feet tees.
- MAINTENANCE - The grounds appear to be mowed weekly. The park is very clean despite no garbage cans. There are no areas of overgrowth along the layout.
- NAVIGATION - One of the easiest courses to navigate that I've ever played. There is a course map at (1). There are no blind baskets and few trees. I'll also mention that the course is good for those that like to bring out the disc golf bag stroller.
- NIGHT GOLF - This is an ideal night golf course. Spacious fairways, few trees, no overgrowth and no water hazards in play.
- QUICK PLAY - I think a quick solo player could easily complete a full 9 in under 20 minutes. Groups of 4 should probably finish in under 45 minutes.
Cons:
Short on uniqueness and void of a challenge.
- ACCESS - Being Military and knowing someone who is, is required. Thank you Mr. Butlertron.
- UNIQUENESS - On some courses you play, you'll look at your bag and realize you only have one disc that can maybe do what you need it do, to hit a fairway. Radford is the opposite. All the holes are generally straight, mostly open and can be approached with by multiple angles.
- ELEVATION - Really none to speak of. I know that this is typically for Florida, but this course is flat for even Florida standards. No more than 5 feet of elevation change throughout the entire course layout.
- RAW BEAUTY - The raw beauty of the course is a well below average. As stated above, no elevation changes, few trees. The course is also surrounded by visible roads. The grounds however appear to be maintained and trimmed up nice as mentioned above in the pros, so it's not a total loss.
- DIFFICULTY - Radford is not much of a challenge to Intermediate level players and above. None of holes are that exceedingly hard. Intermediates players that can throw 325 should be able to birdie them all after 2 or 3 rounds. Rec players should be around 3 or 4 down on average.
- CHARACTER - The basics are good, there's seating on every hole and there's a practice basket. More than I expected, but still subpar overall. There is only one set of tees. There is only one basket location per hole. No finishing shelter with picnic tables and only rudimentary signage.
- SPACING - Slightly below average. I doubt the course is ever full, but if it was, there would be a few tees that could be reached by an errant throw because of no tree protection. Also, a few fairways feel partially shared.
Other Thoughts:
Who knows, maybe newer players stationed nearby will enjoy this course. Its a forgiving layout and the maintenance of the grounds will make for a relaxing round that will boost confidence. Intermediate level players and above, will come away untested. I honestly couldn't recommend this for anyone off-base other than for baggers like myself. For the players on base wanting a greater challenge, I'd head to Blue Angel or Gator Links.
