A Happy Medium

Reviewed: Played on:May 5, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

A fun golf course with medium fairways, multi-shot plays, and well-placed rough.

-Environment: Not exactly natural, but nonetheless extremely green, pleasant, and somewhat private. Lush rough and nice grass keep the course quiet and scenic.

-Navigation: Just follow the cart path and you'll walk right onto the tee. At first I found a couple of spots confusing due to a different tee/basket in sight, but if you remember to stick with the path it becomes obvious.

-Multi-Shot Options: Lots of short par-4s out here are fun to me, but also very scorable. You'll have plenty of options to strategically play your game.

-Elevation: A nice mix of elevation including up, down, and flat. Some precarious greens as well.

-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: The inclusion of real rough in addition to OB paths makes Reidy Creek play very fun. Though there is plenty of length (over 8000' from the longs), the important thing out here is hitting fairways dead center to set up simple approaches. To do so requires good touch, confidence, and decision making to consider how to navigate mid-fairway obstacles and sand traps. The rough is real and thick, and will easily encroach on leaky shots. The beginning is the most lackluster section, but around hole (5) it picks up and doesn't let up with cool fairways and engaging shapes.

Cons:

-True Shaping: Shot shaping matters in terms of where you land, but there aren't any really tight lines to hit. This sword can cut both ways - it's nice to play dealer's choice, but on the other hand you could possibly get bored of sticking with your best shot the whole way.

-Artificial OB: Some won't like the use of cart paths and bunkers as OB. It's a bit of an all-or-nothing course, with your lie either in the fairway or totally hopeless (with just a couple exceptions).

-Price: $15 for a round plus more if you want to drive a cart. Without the cart, you will be making some long transitions from hole to hole.

-Lost Disc: Some of the rough out here is frightening or even inaccessible. You'll have to be careful where you're aggressive or you could easily get one buried in thick and thorny bushes.

-Lack of Tee Signs: Some nice tee signs with maps and distances would be great. UDisc is fine but lacks both the charm and direction of a good sign.

Other Thoughts:

I really, really enjoyed Reidy Creek. Some hard par-3s and soft par-4s hit a sweet spot where I was super satisfied with good execution. It's a beautiful environment as well. There are some holes that really stick out to me as memorable - (5), (8), (9), (10), (13), and (17) come to mind. If it weren't for a slow start and some open holes in the middle, I might put this very highly on my list. As is, this is a Very Good course that I'd happily return to any time.

-Amenities: Tees are mostly spray-painted on the cart path, with some smallish paver tees. No tee signs. One practice basket, with numbered and flagged DISCatchers. Some next tee indicators.

-Pro Shop & Cart Option: Two golf course signatures are available here. Plenty of bevvies at the pro shop and the $10 cart rental.

~Similar Courses: Woodland Park (Columbia, TN); Water Works Park (Kansas City, MO); for medium fairways with artificial OB, Red Ridge Park (Las Vegas, NV).

Pros:

Reidy Creek DGC is located in Escondido, California and offers players a nice 18 hole challenging course. This course kind of lingers between a 3.5 and a 4 for me although with these new discatcher baskets and some fun holes it is a 4.

Reidy Creek is definitely a fun course to play and probably the best one in the area. On a nice summer day this course can be very fun and challenging. Conditions get a little worse in the winter but their not to bad. Reidy Creek is kind of like a sports complex with foot golf, ball golf and disc golf. It can get a little challenging to wait for some people finish ball golf when you have to cross a fairway to play disc golf. Wow that is a mouthful.

The front nine on this course tends to be a little less challenging in my opinion just because there are not as many places to loose your disc. course is equipped with brand new discatcher baskets. For tee pads there are little brick markers that are on the cart path.

+Reidy Creek has 3 different tee pad options (Red, White and Blue) kind of like ball golf. The reason I like this is because if you are just beginning to play there are different tee pads for your style of play.

Hole 1 on this course is very interesting because there are not many options to throw other than a big spike hyzer around the guardian trees. I opted for a slightly different route and went below the branches which did not really work out.

Navigating your way through this course is fairly easy until you get to the back nine. Hole 2 crosses the fairway of Hole 2 on ball golf which can get a little confusing if you have to wait for another group to pass.
Greens are OB
Bunkers are OB.
Car Paths are OB.
I do not think there are any other pin locations on this course. My favorite hole is hole 5. Hole 5 is challenging because the basket is tucked away in the back of the green.

Cons:

Hole 9 really needs a flag on top of the basket. The basket is hidden in the back far right corner and kind of blends into the trees.

After hole 10 you must cross the road to play the rest of the course although due to rain issues water has completely flooded the entire tunnel. The water was at least 4 feet deep and just sitting there.

The flooding is probably permanent because every time i go back there it is always flooded to the max. Instead you must go around and cross the street. Nothing course wise really bothers me although the conditions can get a little wet in the winter.

Other Thoughts:

Other courses in the area do not top Reidy Creek. CSU San Marcos is not that great of a course although Montiel is fairly decent. If you are in the area I would definitely check this course out.

Playing at this course is 10 to 15 dollars. You also have to make a tee time which makes sense because they have 2 other sports at this course. Lots of challenging holes due to the OB hazards they have put on this course.

Pros:

-Reidy Creek Disc Golf Course follows the layout of the well-maintained 18-hole par 3 Reidy Creek Golf Course in north Escondido. The course is challenging but fair, and offers beautiful views of the surrounding hills.

-The course is very well designed. Each hole offers three tees from the cart path (red, white and blue, for the most part adjacent to the red, white, and blue golf tees. The blue tees offer a Pro-level challenge, with ten par fours and most holes playing at least 400 feet. The white tees are appropriate for an intermediate to advanced level player, with an excellent balance between length and strategy-oriented holes. From the red tees, it is still a fairly challenging par three course.

-Most holes have multiple pin positions which significantly alter the complexion of the hole. The long position often adds a half stroke of difficulty. Each basket is well placed near golf greens, sand traps, water hazards, or steep hills, while offering at least a 25-foot buffer on all sides from penalty.

This course tends to not be very crowded, with ball golfers or disc golfers. Especially on week days, playing fast is usually no problem.

-The front nine in particular has a good bit of elevation change. Hole 5, an anhyzer up and around a big hill and over a golf green, is probably the most technical shot on the course. This and Hole 6, a downhill hyzer to a basket in a low area to the left of the golf green, are my two favorite holes on the course. The back nine is longer and more challenging. Hole 14, the longest hole on the course, asking for a maximum distance drive downhill followed by an approach to a basket on a steep upslope, is another noteworthy hole.

-For a ball golf course, a fair amount of shots are required. In addition to a stock hyzer, long turnovers and flex shots will save you strokes on a fair number of holes.

Cons:

-The disc golf greens fee is $10-$15, with a cart. While that's not bad, it's almost as much as the golf greens fee. I think dropping the fee a few dollars or offering a walking rate would significantly increase the number of rounds played.

-Long walks between a handful of holes, characteristic of a ball golf course. In particular, holes 10 to 11 and 17 to 18 require a lengthy walk through a tunnel, or across Broadway Street when the tunnel is flooded, which is often.

-Potential for lost discs is greatest on the holes that play near the creek, (#8 through
#11, #18.)

Other Thoughts:

-I wholeheartedly recommend this course. The greens fee is exactly what it sounds like: a fee to play on green grass. It's certainly not a reason to look for another course.

-I understand it was easiest to place the tees on the cart path, but there are wooded areas to the side of many of the holes. Placing an occasional tee in the trees would greatly amplify the technicality, challenge, and fun factor of the course. It's an excellent course as-is, but moving even 4 tees to technical positions would make it a 4.5 level course.

Reidy Creek - worth a visit! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 27, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Technical course on well maintained executive ball golf facility.
Water, trees, lots of brush, variety of shots through undulating terrain.
Interesting and dense greenery, a rarity for us here in SoCal.
I expected short holes as it is built on a par 3 ball course, but there were plenty of holes where you could throw distance drivers. Some thoughtfully designed holes where layup is rewarded or risk landing in hazard (ball golf greens or bunkers). Distance control and shaping shots a must.
Very walkable course.
No dogs allowed.

Cons:

Not free- expect greens fees of around $15 + more for cart.
We played on a holiday and the course was full of disc golfers, golfers and even soccer golfers. Some slow play but not horrible.
The tee pads are all part of the concrete path for golf carts. This could be improved upon, perhaps with some alternate (longer) t-pads.
No dogs allowed.

Other Thoughts:

There is great potential for lost discs in the thorny brush lining the fairways.
Many of the greens are on peak, some with little run-out behind.
My recommendation would be to play Reidy Creek early in AM, have lunch then play Kit Carson or Brengle.
