Small Welcome Party

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 24, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Located in the Richfield Visitors Center, the Memorial DGC does a great job of being a short, welcoming fixture that left me with only happy thoughts.

-Welcome Center: The property is a nice city park with the Visitors Center on site. The clerk was extremely friendly, and filled my wife and me in on the history of the frisbee and its inventor, Walt Morrison. There's also a small flying disc museum similar to (though smaller than) the one at the IDGC.

-Amenities: Numbered concrete tees and solid DD Veteran baskets. There aren't tee signs, but that honestly isn't an issue since tees are pointed directly at baskets. Multiple sets of bathrooms on site.

-"Friendly": The course could be run by players of any skill level. There's no way to lose discs, and no gnarly things to get caught up in. It's easy to navigate as well, with virtually the entire course visible from any point.

-Time Play: A convenient stop just off the interstate, and a super fast play. This is ideal for baggers, or anyone that likes to stretch on the long cross-Utah drive.

-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: Surprisingly enough, clear and somewhat interesting shapes on every single hole. The first couple use trees and a large rock mound to create very gentle left to right shapes. The next two are slightly longer and utilize the playground as a central obstacle. The final hole will play as a two-shot hole for most with its longer distance and the Visitor Center building blocking anything coming from the right side. It's basic stock shaping for an open city park course, which is more than I expected from a 5er.

-Maintenance: Tees, baskets, and grass were in immaculate shape. It's also worth noting that the grass is watered, creating a green that starkly contrasts the surrounding desert.

Cons:

-Fairway Obstructions: The use of a playground, the Visitor Center building, and the parking lot as fairway-defining obstacles is obviously questionable. On the bright side, the park was empty except for me on a weekday, so the playground shouldn't be much of an issue.

-Drainage: Several parts of the field weren't well drained. If I didn't have waterproof shoes, it probably would have left me with damp feet.

-Scope: It's not a championship course, nor is it trying to be one. It's not even trying to be a full city park course. Richfield has a course that fills this plot of land perfectly - it's just not much land.

Other Thoughts:

Richfield is solidly my highest rated course with this few holes. (The shortest courses above it are 9ers or 9ers that lost a hole at some point to become 8.) The property is pleasant, the shaping exists, and the length is actually just about perfect for a cross-country stop. Though it has some obvious flaws that keep it to Passable, I think it fills its intended purpose quite well. I'd recommend it, despite the lower rating.
