Pros:
What a surprise to find this well-designed, well-maintained 18 hole course in the small down of Dalhart, Texas.
The course is located in the multi-use Lake Rita Blanca Park. Though the course is flat and mostly open, the course design has made good use of what vegetation there is.
Hole lengths vary from 252' to 515', so there is good opportunity to work on your drives. The real challenge out here comes from the near-constant wind. One drive will be into a 20 mph headwind, and the next will have the same wind at your back.
They have just added two new holes, marked 8A and 9A. The "A" is for adventure, as these holes utilize a small canyon that runs alongside the course to create a pair of truly memorable holes.
8A requires a drive across the width of the canyon, which I would estimate at about 300'. Access down into the canyon is rough but doable, so if you miss on the drive you've still got a (difficult) upshot. 9A was still under construction when I was there, but it sounds like the basket will be down in the canyon itself, around a bend from the tee. It is great to see ongoing efforts to add interest to the course.
Each tee has an excellent trapazoidal concrete teepad. They are a bit unusual in that the wider end of the pad is toward the basket, but they work well. There is a clear sign at each pad giving hole number, distance, and an accurate map of the basket position, tree locations, etc.
Navigation throughout the course was pretty simple. I printed a map but once I located the first tee I didn't need to refer to it for subsequent holes.
Cons:
Not a great deal of variety. Most of the holes are pretty open, so there is not a lot of line-shaping required on your drive. But to be fair they didn't have a lot of elevation or vegetation to work with.
Most of the teepads are built up several inches above the surrounding ground. There is some fresh dirt piled up around the edge, but if you use a big run-up that starts off of the pad, you won't like the abrupt elevation change.
Other Thoughts:
This was the sixth course I played on my West Texas/Panhandle trip, and it was the best. With the addition of the new "Adventure Holes" the course will be even better.
If the wind stops blowing this will be a much easier course, but it seems like the wind always blows in the panhandle.
This is a multi-use park, and there are picnic tables scattered within the course. I would imagine that some holes could be unplayable if the park is busy.
