Putter Prowess Preferable

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 19, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

A quick 9 nestled at the back of Platte City, Riverview has plenty of character to make an interesting round even with such short holes.

Nine good DisCatchers and a course sign at the corner of the parking lot.

Elevation is used well, big downhills on 1, 3, and 8, uphill on 2, but it's the milder changes that make the course really stand out. The rise in the land where you'd like your shot to skip on 4 making things difficult or the land falling away more sharply as you go further down the fairway of 5 making the ace run risky. It all adds to the challenge.

Wooded lines are the other highlight, the shaped fairway of 3 and 4, the dogleg to the pin on 6, and the short lines on 8 and 9, the woods force control on what would otherwise be easy holes.

Cons:

The tee signs pictured are all gone. The posts for most of them are still there so hopefully replacements are coming but it doesn't look like a priority. I couldn't find the tee post of 1 so I played from the concrete next to the bleachers. The tees have some mulch, but with use there's a lot of mud around, too.

Hole 7 probably used to have a line, but it's long gone. The best option is a righty backhand around the pines and over the baseball field and hope for a putt.

Some funky navigation spots, finding 4's tee from 3 is a trek through some pines, and 6's tee doesn't give much indication that you're supposed to turn around and throw back through the opening you just came through.

Other Thoughts:

Plenty of parking even if the shelter, course, and soccer fields are busy

With so little room and an average hole distance of 199ft, you wouldn't expect such a good course out of this land. However, they've pulled it off quite nicely, offering challenge for forehands and backhands alike, and punishment for missed shots. If you're craving more golf in between St Joseph and Kansas City, this is the spot for you.

Riverview Park Disc Golf Course Is Just Plain Fun! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 13, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

As I drove up to Riverview Park, I honestly wasn't expecting great things. The park is kind of a narrow, semi-odd shaped park. The parking lot, play area, restrooms and picnic shelter are all in the upper area. There is a soccer field down from the parking area. But where is the disc golf course?

I finally figured out (I think) that # 1 plays 264' downhill from the corner of the parking lot to a basket tucked into the trees. The baskets here are yellow Discatchers which show up well in the woods. The tee pads are natural w/gravel. They aren't ideal but little run up is needed on this short course. The tee signs are excellent, brightly colored under Plexiglas.

# 2 plays 252' up a small hill. # 3 is a slightly downhill, anhyser 225' through a small window. # 4 is a cool 180' downhill Ace run but the tee pad is pretty poor. # 5 is a technical, very short 138' anhyser throw. Be careful on # 6 the sign on this 147' shows the basket on right when it's actually a hyser shot. I think I have that hyser versus anhyser correct on # 6? Might be the other way? # 7 is 246' into a small gap in the trees. # 8 is another cool little 141' downhill Ace run and # 9 plays 198' down a tight little path with a right turn.

Cons:

Everyone concurs that the natural-gravel tee pads are the weak link here.

Beginner/Recreational distance and challenge. Don't need no drivers here.

A couple of baskets are faded.

Difficult to find the # 1 tee pad.

Other Thoughts:

This was my fifth course I played today and Riverview was by far, the most fun. Yes, it's just a little beginner course but the throws are fun, the design is superb, the hilly terrain is conducive to fun disc golf and the amenities are good. Riverview Park is an easy 10 mile/15 minute drive from the airport making this an easy get if you have a layover in KC.

Riverview Too 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 18, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Riverview Park in Platte City is a fun 9 hole course in a nice park. There is plenty of elevation change, and the woods get pretty thick on a few holes. All of the holes are pretty short, with a total distance under 1800'.

The tees are gravel, and most have signs. The yellow bands on the Discatcher baskets are easy to spot in the woods, when there is a clear line of sight.

All of the holes are reachable, but the pins are usually protected by trees on one or more sides. This would be a fun course for a new player to learn techniques and fundamental throws without getting to frustrated.

Hole 1 is a good downhill run from the corner of the parking lot to a pocket in the trees by the soccer field.
Hole 2 throws back uphill with lots of open air on the right side and mature trees on the left.
Hole 3 is downhill again, with a few large trees that can knock you down if you stray too far from the center of the fairway. Similar to 1, but shorter and not as steep.
Hole 4 is comparatively flat, with a couple of big trees on the side of the fairway leading to a well protected basket a few paces into the woods.
Hole 5 enters the heavily wooded area, and is a slightly downhill tunnel shot. If you over shoot the pin the comeback may be a tough out.
Hole 6 is a short hole but the target is not visible, and it is a high window into a twisty approach. It takes a good flexing turnover, or maybe a thumber, get creative.
Hole 7 is downhill a bit, and has several mature trees that block the most direct route. You can throw a RHBH hyzer to the right to get around, but there is a risk of landing across the fence on the baseball field.
Hole 8 is back into the thick woods, downhill. A lot like 5, but a little steeper and a bit more airspace.
Hole 9 is the toughest hole in my opinion, still in the woods and uphill. The fairway has a tricky bend, and there are branches all over waiting to take you down.

Cons:

The gravel tees are not the most level and have room for improvement. The link to the course map shows a nice Houck design illustration, but I didn't see it at the course. It could be next to the playground, but you may want to do a screen grab or print one. There is not a sign posted for hole 1, but it is the corner of the parking lot, marked with spray paint.

Pros will not be amused with this course. It could be an easy 7 or 8 under for someone who is deadly accurate.

Other Thoughts:

The course that I have played more than any other was Riverview Park in North Augusta, SC. When I saw that there was a Riverview close to where I live now, I knew I would have to check it out eventually. It was like the Mini Me of my old home course. Good mix of open and wooded with nice elevation changes.

It starts and ends strong, 1 and 9 were my favorite holes. I was only 1 under par, with birdies on holes 4 and 6, and a bogey on 9. Next time I drop off or pick up someone at the airport perhaps I will go back and try to improve on that.

Pitch 'n putt 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 1, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Elevation change on nearly every hole
Great time to shape up your mid/putter game
Take a child...great playground for after your 38 minute round
beautiful view of the river basin from the parking lot.
good innova disc-catcher baskets
nice pad signs for each hole

Cons:

only nine holes
tee pads are crud. Throw off the side, if there's room
Nice when i went, but it looks like it could get muddy
not really a destination course, but fun for newbies

Other Thoughts:

I don't know what the P&R is allowed to use for room at this park, but my goodness is there a lot of opportunity to expand this course into the woods. I would really like to see it grown and be bigger.
Whoever designed this course did a stellar job with the amount of space they were given. Kudos to that!

I loved the elevation change on this course, nothing is flat. Great baskets
identifiable teeing area. Giant field you just have to throw in

Cons:

Terrible Teepads (eroded gravel) Super short, tough to find the tee box for 1

Other Thoughts:

Tee from NorthWest corner of parking lot. Throw from parking lot into giant soccer field

Not a bombers dream 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 20, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course has gravel tees and adequate signage.
There are technical holes and a couple of open holes as well. Good elevation here.
Rounds should play quickly here and there are other amenities like a playground and rest rooms on site.
Hole observations:
1-downhill shot
2-uphill shot with cedars on the left of the fairway
3-downhill with cedars upon approach
4-up and down terrian
5-slight dog leg to the right, slopes downhill behind the basket
6-uphill has a narrow gap to hit
7-has a gap between 2 cedars or you can throw a big spike hyzer RHBH
8-downhill with a nice window to hit
9-uphill with a slight dog leg left

Cons:

It appears that 1's tee box and signage are missing. It appears that there was some recent dirt work/sodding done so maybe thats what happened? I teed off from the corner of the parking lot so.
There is entirely too much litter, mainly beer cans, scattered throughout this course. Maybe some trash cans would alleviate this littering, one can wish at least.
The walk from 9's basket to the parking lot is pretty lengthy.

Other Thoughts:

This is a short course that has nice challenging holes with good elevation. This is a course that will challenge your shot shaping abilities in certain spots. If you are looking for something more technical than the flat/open park style course, but don't want a super narrow and technical course, then this is the place for you. There are gaps that must be hit to score well here.
If I were in the area again I would play this course again. It has enough of a challenge to keep you interested I just wished there were another 9 holes.

Short and sweet 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 13, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

There is a great variety of shot paths, including the open holes and technical holes. Holes 1, 6 and 7 are right to left, while 3, 4, and 5 are left to right. The other 3 are pretty straight. 10/10

The tee pads have nice hole maps that direct you to the hole. The first pad is missing altogether, but the first basket is visible from the parking lot so after you pick a spot to throw from it's fine. 10/10

Navigation between holes is easy after the first hole. Hole maps have an arrow pointing to the next pad. 9/10

Fairways were well mowed, brush isn't too thick to find discs in. Bathrooms on site but no water fountains. No trash cans on the course. Missing tee pad. Course maintenance 7/10

Obstacles are used pretty well here. There is not much room at this park so several holes are short trails through the trees. Some of the holes have the same feel, like 3 and 7 or 4 and 5. 7/10

There is good variety of openness on the holes. The first few are a little longer (220-280) with a few trees to guard baskets or force a ceiling. Four of the last five holes are shorter (150-200) and very technical. 7/10

Cons:

No alternate hole positions 0/10

Only a couple of holes require deicsionmaking, the most significant of which is 6, which is an interesting shot with a ridge of trees between the tee and the basket. 2/10

Not much variety in distance. I only threw driver on hole 2 and for a spike hyzer on hole 7. Most of the rest feel about the same since the longer holes are a little downhill. 2/10

I had trouble with the footing on the gravel tees, they were pretty slick. The baskets are pretty good discatchers though. 3/10

Grass was pretty well mowed in the fairways. Brush isn't too thick on the ground but there were tons of spiderwebs as the course does not get much traffic. No benches but at least it's short and there's some shade. 3/10

Not too much elevation present after the first 3 holes. They do a good job with what little they have. 3/10

Discs weren't too bad to find in the brush except maybe around the edges of the park. The cedar trees will eat them like crazy though, I had one stuck in about 5ft up and I almost couldn't get to it. 3/10

This is a good course for beginners to work on their accuracy without worrying about distance. Experienced players can practice their approach shots on tight holes, but the open holes won't challenge them at all. Challenging all levels 4/10

Other Thoughts:

Overall Challenge - 2/10

I was pleasantly surprised by this course. It was a fun little course to practice approach shots of all kinds. Open and tight, left to right or right to left.

Once is enough 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 25, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Signs at tee boxes are helpful in determining line and direction to next hole.
Baskets are easy to see.
Good course for sharpening your midrange game.

Cons:

If you stray from your line you will find yourself in the woods with some very untamed undergrowth -- this makes it hard to find your discs.
Most holes play the same; there isn't much diversity in strategy when attacking each hole.

Other Thoughts:

I would not go out of my way to try this course for the first time. St. Mary's or English Landing Park are good alternatives for a 9 hole course -- they are more open and provide a variety of hole types for a more rounded experience.

Surprisingly fun little 9-holer 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 24, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great use of elevation and lines for such a short course. Have to learn to control a mid down hill, up hill, curve through woods. Flick shots are very helpful on a couple of holes, and a sky hyzer deuce was doable for weeny like me on hole 7.

Well mowed, at least when I was there.

Great Houck Design signs. Tee signs are also numbered on the top on all four sides of the pole. First I've ever seen like this - very cool.

Cons:

Holes could be longer. It seems like there is plenty of rooom here, but it would reguire a lot of work to cut the holes out of untamed woods.
Particulary holes and 4 & 8. They are just really too short, nearly a Par 2.

Other Thoughts:

I was really surprised by this course. It is now tied for my favorite 9 hole course (the other being Sertoma Park in Sioux City, IA)

First time on course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 4, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Easy beginner course. Short holes. No need for a big driver here. Mid-range and putter are all that are needed.

Easy to see the basket from the tee box. Tee boxes have new pea gravel.

Hole 9 is through a narrow S opening. Most holes (except #2) are down hill from tee to basket.

Cons:

Muddy through the woods.

Other Thoughts:

A easy 30 minute play, unless you throw it in the woods like I did.
