Mediocre at best 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 12, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

It's a challenging course with lots of dense trees. Signs are posted well and the course is layed out fairly well for as tight as the course is

Cons:

Very steep hillside for the entire course. The grounds aren't the best and some people may like courses like that but it's not for me

Okay course that has some safety issues 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 6, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Very technical course that doesn't require distance off the tee.
-Good use of terrain to create challenges

Cons:

-Too many area where flight lines over lap with others.
-Some holes are difficult to traverse due to steepness of hills.
- Needs more steps to reach baskets safer.

Other Thoughts:

This course is interesting and a challenge. I'm not sure given the size and other things in the park that building an 18 hole course was the best idea. The major issue I had was the difficultly of getting around on the front 9. The majority of the front 9 is built on a fairly steep hillside. To get from tee to basket on most holes you have to carefully walk along any reasonably flat piece of land that can be found. To get to the basket on 9 requires a walk up a very steep hill that is mostly loose dirt and rocks. More work needs to be done to make this course safer and enjoyable for all players.

Smart design in a well-kept city park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 25, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Another strong HB Clark course that's worth your time. Plenty of challenge in a tight, clean, and well-maintained city park. 1-10 are extremely fun up and down through moderately wooded terrain. 11-18 use walking path and creek OB that certainly add to the difficulty. 7 is a picturesque signature ace run downhill 300 ft. Signs, teepads, and baskets are in great shape, Good course map and practice basket near the parking area. Hole 9 circles back to the parking area (despite long walk to #10). Given the small space available, this course maximized everything!

Cons:

Favors RHBH on most holes. Safety concerns with overlapping fairways and other park users. Shared space--if there is anything else going on in the park (amphitheater, benches, picnic areas, shelters, etc), you'll lose access to some holes.

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoyed this! If it was on a piece of land that was only devoted to disc golf, I'd consider a 4 star rating. Bravo to sneaking 18 holes in a small space but this design relies on a sparsely played/utilized park--which I'm sure this is usually the case. Every hole has personality and uses the land and trees to make some fun lines. The Somerset area has a lot to offer in 6 strong courses in the area (Pulaski Top/ Bottom, Eubank, Lake Cumberland, Miller Park, Rocky Hollow).

Unexpected Fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 25, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

I played this course while vacationing in the Cumberland area. I didn't expect a whole lot and I was really surprised with this course. It plays as a mildly technical course with a good mix of (significant) elevation and flat holes. The course is mildly wooded throughout with a few open shots/holes. I had a lot of fun during my round, using shots and discs I rarely use at my normal haunts. The elevation, especially on the front nine, is significant, with a lot of throws along the side of a hill that can really ruin your day if you get a bad roll.

Holes 7, 9, and 14 were the ones I enjoyed the most. 7 is a fun ace run down hill, 9 is a tight shot up a beast of a slope, and 14 was picturesque, looks easier than it plays, and has a plenty of interesting lines. 18 is also a great finishing hole: a big toss uphill. Another plus on design is that both holes 9 and 18 finish around the parking lot, so you can easily exit after a quick 9 or start on #10 if you wish. I will definitely make it a point to play this course again if I'm ever in the area.

Cons:

Although I do applaud how well the course fits into a rather small park, at times the course is a little cramped, with tees next to baskets or areas where even a slightly errant shot can fly into another hole or two. Each hole has a sign that is well done, but often the signs make the hole appear much straighter than it actually is.

Other Thoughts:

The course is pretty easy to follow, but "next tee" arrows could be places at baskets and on tee signs. I feel #12 missed an opportunity for a fun shot by not having the tee throw through the two trees growing out of the ground that form a V. As it stands now, you throw to the side of the trees. Especially on the front ni

Nice, tough, slightly technical course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 12, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Ill start by saying that I fail to see the flaws in this course that some others have seen. This course starts with a nice course map and practice basket right next to the parking area. The first 9 holes have a lot of well used elevation changes. The holes have defined lines for you to hit, but a tree hit can send you well off course since you are playing on a hillside. The terrain has grown in well and was fairly easy to traverse. The back 9 holes are more flat, but do require more accurate shots due to creek and walking path OB lines. I actually enjoyed these holes as well as the front. Hole 11 was the only bad hole and that is due to recent nearby construction. There are great benches at every hole and plenty of trash cans.

Cons:

Some tee signs are a little off on basket locations. Make sure you look ahead as the most noticeable basket may not be the one you need to play to.

Other Thoughts:

If you are in this area and are looking to throw a round then I would absolutely give this place a try. I think it is ten times better than either course across town.

Could have been the best 9 holer in the state... settled for a mediocre 18. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 23, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

I had the chance today to play this course. After only seeing 2 reviews on here, I thought it would give me a chance to give an unbiased opinion. Let me start out by saying that this park has some pretty awesome terrain, and it looks like parks and rec, or the club takes great care of the area. This course is fair, if you know where the baskets are (I will go into that later in the cons). Seemed as though there were very few tweener holes on this course. All seemed like legit par 3s and 4s. The elevation change..... this course offers a variety of well planned elevation change. I was pretty impressed from the get go. The amenities are great here... a bench at every hole... plenty of trash cans... awesome gym area that you park beside.... great course map. The fun factor is definitely there as is difficulty in the front 9.

Cons:

The Front 9: Really not too much negative to say here. My only complaint is that we threw to the wrong basket on 3 different shots. Now 1 time I would say would be the throwers fault at an Intermediate level, 2 times might be coincidence, 3 times.... 3 times has to be a design fault. What is worse... is that those shots were actually better looking holes (for instance hole 3s pad to 5s basket).

I feel that this course might have been professionally setup for the first 9 or 10 holes by HB ... and then the rest were just an after thought. The course would be better without 7 of the last 9 holes... plain and simple. The shots often play near a walking path, or a mostly dry creek. They just don't flow with the front 9 holes. It really started feeling that I was crossing my steps back and forth, and that both the pads and the baskets were placed by the Parks and Rec instead of HB. It started looking like the pads were stacked side by side on every hole there on the back 9. Just a really weird flow.

Other Thoughts:

If I was rating the front 9 only... or if this was a 9 hole course, I would probably rate it as high as a 4. If I was rating the back 9 only, I would rate it as low as a 2. I am rating this course as a 2.5... that is how bad the back 9 is.... the course probably should rate at 2.75. If you are in the area, I would probably pass on this course and play its big brothers at PC Park.

Good use of terrain 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 14, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a pretty unique course because of the amount of elevation change. Almost every hole involves either an elevation change of more than 50 feet or a steep slope in one direction or another. Tee boxes and baskets are all in great shape. Lots of benches and trash cans. Very little undergrowth even though it is a very wooded course.

Cons:

Due to the steep elevation, some holes are pretty hard to play if there has been a decent amount of rain recently. Just getting to your disc can be quite an adventure. There is one hole (3 I think...) where some vines and stuff hang right in the path of the tee box. This may be by design, but I got frustrated with it after hitting them on 3 different drives... Other than that, no real complaints.

Other Thoughts:

Hole 7 is awesome. It's about a 300 foot hole with well over 100 feet in elevation drop. A well thrown putter can easily cover the distance. Try to avoid this course if it has rained recently.
