Pros:
Sanders Elementary Scholl sits in a residential area and takes students kindergarten thru 5th grade . Play is prohibited during school hours and during school activities . The course is directly behind the school , plenty of parking is available . There are no bathrooms for the public here .
This is a brand new 9 holes course , really intended as an extra activity for the grade school kids . There are no tee pads , signs or indicators of where to tee off . I was lucky enough to run into one of the parents of a couple of kids at the school who told me that everyone tees off basket to basket ( where do you stand to tee off for #1 ? 9 ? ) The baskets are nice yellow banded and numbered Discatchers . There is a large flat field ( soccer ? ) where the course sits . There are a couple of baskets that sit on an uphill or downhill slope , and #7 sits down an embankment . Other than that , the area is flat . The school is very nice and pretty new , replacing an old elementary school in 2008 . The grounds are very clean and the grass was mowed . The course description said that the course was lightly wooded , but I didn't remember trees coming into play during my round . ( ? ) . The course length is perfect for the kids , with a hole as short as 63' and as long as 241' with no obstructions to frustrate them . The holes average 152' .
I took my time and safaried some of the holes , so it took me over half an hour to play , but I could have played it in about 15 minutes . It's fast , and good putting practice . Great for unobstructed ace runs , even for the kids .
Disc Risk - There isn't even a tree here to swallow up a disc . Disc Risk is zero , unless you forget to take yours out of the basket .
I did not look close enough , but if the back of the school has flood lights , or you equip the baskets with lighting , this place would be great for Night Golf .
Cons:
I understand that when you don't have tees you can move the course around . The course is brand new and I get it , but even ribbons hanging on coat hanger wires in the ground are better than basket to basket . Safety can be a concern here . Since no one knows where to stand and there is no conformity , young kids might tend to throw into others teeing off from the basket that they are shooting at . The baskets are numbered , so at least you know which one you are throwing at . This is not a popular course , but it has a playground and the back of the school is popular with the kids and the parents . Be aware when throwing . There is no challenge here . Just how many birdies and aces ( or bucket/chain strikes ) you will accumulate .
Other Thoughts:
Sanders Elementary School is now the new member of Lexington's " stable " of courses . I encountered a man with his son that was playing . He had moved here from another part of the state and enjoyed practicing with his 5 yr old in tow . Don't let my low grade for the course act as though this course is terrible . It is not , but I have to grade on equipment , course flow , and challenge among other factors . I rarely dislike any course that promotes the game of disc golf . This could also lead to a challenge match with other elementary schools ( If Playing Dixie Elementary , insist on playing here at hole ) for a friendly competition . The course is also a nice way to introduce this nice school to outsiders .
My Recommendation : This course is just a putting/midrange practice field for anyone local and above . Don't take scoring seriously . It's a great course for the family , especially those with young kids , to get together after dinner or during the weekend and play a round or 2 together . This course is also almost perfect for a date . Not a lot of sweating going on here , and no risk of looking for your disc . This is the ultimate course for intros and to answer questions from the curious . Elementary students will benefit from this as well . Don't Go Out Of Your Way To Play Here , But If Local , Make Up Your Own Course And Practice ,,,
