Robin Hood would dominate here!”

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 14, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Robert Wilson park lies in the middle of West Carrolton's Sherwood Forest neighborhood, amongst dozens of residential streets with quaint names based on the legendary stories. So it just stands to reason that the type of disc golf course that makes a good fit requires precision over brute force. Can you split the arrow, and actually throw brave and true on the short, technical, moderately tree-directed lines available to you on holes 1, 2, 3, 6 and 8? They each demand the choice of a line, and often make you keep it straight and low below the branches. But there is more. Hole 3 has left and right hyzer lines. Hole 5 and 7 give the bigger arms a brief chance to show off a bit, and the challenging hole 6 has a little of both: throw out left 250' plus for a look into the bushy lane in to the guarded basket.

With very nice, level, concrete tees, white Veteran baskets, and actually excellent signage (showing distances, hole overview, next tee direction, and on posts that often include bag hooks and drink holders), the course amenities are better than expected for a quick park nine holer. The design meets my definition of safety in flowing away from unwanted 'interactions' with the many other attractions in the park. The course is relatively fun due to unexpected variety, and rises to a level of challenge appropriate for the Novice to Intermediate player. Happy to keep this one in mind next time I'm in the area, and only about two miles off exit 44 on interstate 75, if you're traveling through and want to stretch your legs. Not a destination course but a good picnic round!

Cons:

The safety of the design meant the flow of the course is a little awkward: I'd suggest parking by the ninth basket in the lot off of Wilson Park Drive, hit the bathroom and throw a few warm up tosses across the open field to the first basket if no one is playing the hole. Walk the short length of hole 1 and throw back out there, leaving the cart or bag near that tee because once you hole out, you'll walk it again to go to 2. Park the bags on the left side of 2's fairway, because, after 2, you'll double back half the length to 3. Now the long walk around the pool area to 4, then the flow is more typical (counter-clockwise back to where you parked). Hole 6 throws back oddly close to the 5th basket (adding a 'mando' won't add protection, so be careful if anyone is playing the green 'behind' you). And there's a fairly long walk from 7 to 8.

The park didn't have any real elevation to work with, so don't expect that, or water, on this course (except for the slight fall and rise on the pretty hole 9). And for those who only seem to enjoy distance, this isn't going to be the course for you.

Finally, except for one large sign on the pool fence, I didn't spot any 'additional' next tee signs, which could be handy for first timers without a map.

Other Thoughts:

Happy to see a thoughtful design in such a simple package, and the excellent execution of fundamental amenities. But what else would Sir Robin expect for the people of Locksley?

Sherwood Forest drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 30, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Bathrooms
Other activities in the park

Cons:

Other activities in the park
Very little in the way of obstacles or elevation
Occasional long walks from hole to hole

Other Thoughts:

This is a nine-hole course that wends its way mostly around the edge of a city park that includes a water park, some playground equipment, basketball courts, and if memory serves, a tennis court (I wasn't really looking at the edges of the park.) Fortunately, someone had enough good sense to not make the mistake so many other small parks make, put some distance between the throwing lanes and other park activities--possibly this person had too much good sense, as the park could have easily added another three holes if they had wanted, and still kept the course separate from the rest of the park activities. Sadly, the placement of the water park in the center of everything means that there are some unavoidable long walks from one side to the other, and as of this review, there is no sort of guidance letting you know where to go. So bring a map or a phone app that gives you the course layout.

The course does have some mature trees in it, but nowhere near enough. The biggest problem with the course is the relative lack of obstacles: of the nine holes, three have essentially no obstacles or noticeable elevation changes, and of the remainder, only two of them have obstacles that I had to plan around, even minimally. (I had a bigger challenge from the moderate wind than anything the course threw at me.) Fortunately, this is a fixable problem--plant a few more trees and wait a couple years. Unfortunately, it's not likely to be on the radar of anyone who's got the authority to actually purchase or plant trees. (Of course, if you like grip-it-and-rip-it play, this whole issue is a positive point, not a negative one.)

However, I don't think this was intended as a destination course. I think it was planned as a quick course for locals, especially those unfamiliar with the sport, and it should do just fine for that. And I could see stopping occasionally for a quick nine if I was local. But as I'm not local, I'm unlikely to ever return, myself, unless someone plants another couple dozen trees in strategic places.

Great new beginner course

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 21, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Concrete tee pads are in!
-Clear and accurate tee signs for all holes, including bag hangers on the back of the posts
-Good use of existing trees that requires some shot shaping
-Bathrooms available
-Plenty of parking
-Fresh, new Innova Discatchers
-Average length concrete tee pads
-Diverse lengths of holes
-Course plays near road and parking lot, creating gentle OB lines
-The course uses available space very well, I'm glad they didn't try to fit 18 holes in this park
-Playground and pool also in park
-Well cared for park and course

Cons:

-Low areas near road have poor drainage, be prepared for mud

Other Thoughts:

This is a fantastic course to introduce beginners to the sport. Fun birdie opportunities for more experienced players, but achievable pars for newcomers. Huge thanks to the course designers and parks department for a well cared for park and course. If their goal was a simple and solid entry level course, they did a great job!
